Although.... the fact that Kuririn was looking at Roshi's porn rather than being with his family leads me to believe that after coming back to life, he returned to find that #18 had moved on with a bodybuilder named Lars.

I'm guessing they 17 and 18 used to be human but Dr. Gero made them into Artificial Humans, like he made himself as one.
