Not quite 97. Some Z DVDs have 4 eps, and one (Trunks saga) has 5. I believe the total expected is around 85 or so.
Wow. Only 85. If you average the price of each disc to about $25 each, that's still over $2000 you're forking over.

It's silly I tell you. Silly!

Or you could go to Best Buy and get them for $16-$17 each. :)

As a note, the Yu Yu Hakusho release has 4 episode discs at a much higher rate than DBZ does, discs 19-26 all had 4 episodes as did several before that (especially the earlier ones). They however have gone to nothing but 3 episode discs for the final arc.

Still at least DBZ isn't as bad off in the episode count department as Pokemon used to be, I believe it was 2 episodes a disc for the longest time wasn't it?

*goes into otaku geezer mode* Why, in my day, they sold VHS tapes with only one or two episodes per volume for $30 each....and we were happy to get 'em! */otaku geezer mode*

Anyway, yeah, I also wish that they would release more episodes per disc for DBZ....I naively expected that they would for the Saiyan saga stuff since, technically, most of it has already been released and/or shown in endless repeats on TV. But I guess there's not much we can do about it, unless people feel like boycotting or something (which probably wouldn't work at all since addicts like me will just keep buying them anyway. Must....have....Veggie-samaaaa!) */fangirl mode....wait, did I ever enter fangirl mode? Oh wait, I guess I'm just in it all the time :P*

The inclusion of the spanish dub was certainly interesting, though it puzzles me why FUNi would include it on their DVDs along with their own low-quality english dub. Doesn't this just make their own dub look even worse?

There's a few off topic things going on here and on topic things about different aspects of this Box set so I'm just typing to what I feel needs to be said.

I am not going to purchase any Ultimate uncut DVD's for the simple reason I have uncut Japanese episodes up to the Frieza saga(and still getting more...fast), well, not the 1st ones, from the 13th episode. I doubt they are Dragon Box episodes, but a tad of grain don't mean crap to me, as long as they are in Japanese and have English subtitles I ain't too fussed.

One reason I would purchase the Ultimate Uncuts would be mainly to view the episodes in English language with the original Japanese BG Music, but curiosity can be ignored this time, I'm a bit strapped for cash.

As for the 3 episodes per disc, well, an obvious money making process is present here, seing as the DBZ series has ended and has been fully released on DVD's, the only other way to rake in the cash would be to realease these Ultimate DVD's and get money from DBZ crazy fans who don't want the series to end, or just people with loads of money to spend and time to consume.

I'm certainly not against these DVD's, I'm happy if anything, people get to see these episodes uncut, and I like the proper DBZ story to be viewed by everyone.

The Japanese BGM is quality compated to the cheap synthesized sounds of the dub, but it's too late to complain.

This cannot be done unfortunately. The Japanese BGM is integrated into the Japanese soundtrack and is therefore separate from the English tracks.

Yeah, but Toei also has a BGM track which they are more than willing to give to any dubbing company (I actually believe that they did give it to FUNi originally, and FUNi just decided to use their own). When you buy the show, the music generally comes with it. Look at just about any other dub of any other series (or other foreign DBZ dubs for that matter).

Hmm, didn't know that, but makes complete sense now that I think about it. They'd have to be able to get the music separate considering Pioneer's versions of movies 1-3 used it, as well as the spanish dub as far as I know.

Not to mention the entire span of DragonBall and its movies.

Speaking of the original score of DragonBall... I've still been meaning to import the 'Zenkyoku Shu' album... :D

Looking at the Goku vs. Vegeta featurette right now and I have to say I like it when Mr. Sabat and Mr. Schemmel talk in character. Especially when Mr. Schemmel does his "Goku getting hit in the balls" scream.

Qoute: "AUUUUOOOOHHHHH!!!" That was hilarious.

Excellent review Mike, you left out the fact that FUNi is now leaving out even a dub-only "next-EP preview" for the dvd's final episode (which for the American market, would of made it as Uncut as possibly done), other than that, covered it top-notch perfectly.

Once more, here is my own review on it: http://www.dbzoa.net/modules.php?op=mod ... 173&page=1 .

Yeah, I forgot to mention both that and the fact that it's still the wrong "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" animation. I keep meaning to go back and add them in :). I plan on doing some site stuff this afternoon, so I'll hopefully remember to do so...

Are FUNi actually censoring away the kanji (amazingly with digital paint) for the openings/closings, or using textless copies?

There's textless copies of the second and third version, but (apparently) not the first; people with the first DBZ "Dragon Box" have said that the first version doesn't have a textless version as an extra (though the next two versions do).

So then are FUNi using the wrong openings/endings? Because I always assumed the first DBZ opening was the standerd thing, ending with Goku extending the nymbol in front of Kid Gohan, Kuririn, Tenshinhan, ect. Or are FUNi digitaly-paint censoring them, playing textless copies they've had since the first DBZ English version ending was whipped up, or receiving them textless from Toei?

Those are the burning questions. Because if there receiving them textless from Toei, that's perfectly exceptable that there still being called uncut. However if there getting the actual openings/closings with the kanji-credits, then that's a straight up story of false advertisment as they'd be either 1) Using textless versions they have had laying around or 2) digitaly-paint censoring it themselves.

Sorry if my rambling of this is off-topic, but after the GT dvds, I see no reason why FUNi would continualy show the openings/closings textless, unless that's how they recieve them on the master-tapes.

It's been explained before, but here goes.

There are three animations to "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA." The first does not have Nappa & Vegeta walking with the fire/volcano in the background, and is used for around 20 episodes. The second does. The third is the standard Android/Cell arc one with SSJ Goku at the end.

The actual first opening can be seen on the Dead Zone DVD release (with the movie credits on top, but yeah).

From the sounds of it, even Toei doesn't have a textless version of the actual first opening to use, which is why FUNimation hasn't used it. Understandable, but it's still a point to be made that it's the incorrect opening.
