I don't think it is something related to ideology. The copyright holders have plenty of money to induce some political figures
Oh but it is. The Government has to dance around the corporations to pass anything as they have the say and not the leaders themselves which end up misrepresenting the country's needs.

Watch CGPGrey, he has some good videos on this kind of stuff.

I hate to be off topic from DBZ and all, so sorry about that.

I don't know about any one else, but I definitely don't want anything to with with the Islamic culture and Sharia Law.

The internet is so massively intertwined with pop culture (example: earlier today I saw a department store ad on TV that parodied Rebecca Black's "Friday". Or for something older, how about a few Thanksgivings ago where the Macy's Day Parade featured a live Rickroll.) that I just can't see this passing without a backlash so enormous from the public that could have potential to rival some of the things that went on during the prohibition era in the U.S. when alcohol was temporarily illegal.

The internet as it exists now is so central to daily life; especially for younger people. So many people of all ages use it to express themselves, to relax, to vent.

These companies can't go back to "before the internet" no matter how much they want. It's the whole trying-to-put-the-genie-back-in-the-bottle thing. People don't like being patronized and they don't like being censored. Censorship is scary, it's a slippery slope.

I mean, can you imagine an internet that contains nothing with the exception of official company websites? No forums, nowhere to upload your own content, no social networks and no social-related abilities at all?

Really hoping this thing doesn't make it. I don't want to lose the internet.

I can't see that ending well. Any new system will probably just be not well thought out enough and make things worse.

Don't blame the system, blame the people who abuse it.

Sheesh, and I thought the 3 strike law in NZ was bad. :? Haven't they realized that copyright infringing makes up half of the Internet?

The music industry tried, they failed and lost billions. And so has Hollywood. Why not take out the source of piracy in one fell swoop? No matter what, piracy will continue. This is all about control and of course, money!

This better not affect Daizenshuu EX, Because that's the only thing I really use the Internet for anymore. This is the best community on the Internet. And I'll be damned if he get's shut down. Pretty much to hell with the Internet if this site goes down.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Well, I do think ensuring right-holders have ways to protect their intellectual property is a good cause...but this is definitely not the way to go about it. How are we meant to sympathise with them and their rights when they clearly don't give a damn about everyone else's?

Wasn't there a scare like this last year, too?

Not saying it's not legitimate. Last year we probably stopped them with movements just like this one. It's just interesting that I'm kind of seeing a pattern here; a pattern of, "Let's just keep trying to destroy the Internet once a year. Maybe they won't notice after awhile."

There was the Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act in 2010, which failed and came back this year as the PROTECT IP Act...which I think is even worse. In case it hasn't been mentioned already, it's not only SOPA that we have to worry about, but PROTECT IP as well.

Another question; if this applies only to American companies, what does anything Dragonball based in the States really have to fear? As it is, the only thing Funimation attacks are straight uploads on Youtube and such. There hasn't been any recent hostilities towards Abridged or fansites that I can remember.

Didn't Funimation initially take down DBZ abridged?

I believe it was Toei who originally took down DBZ Abridged.

Arab is not synonymous with Islam and Islamic countries do not always rule by Sharia Law. There are also Christian Arabs and Jewish Arabs. I just want to make that clear since it seems that many Westerners have a confusion regarding this.

And if we think about the Arab countries and their situation there regarding richness and free will; I bet that there won't be long to when the situation is the same in the west, as democracy is being killed to be able to obtain profit for corporations. This bill is one of those situations.

I wonder... the one who made out this bill... he can't use the internet and that's why he wants to ban it from everyone in the world  !
I mean, c'mon... don't tell me he's someone in such a high position and does not use internet! Everyone uses internet. The Prime Minister of the UAE uses Facebook to communicate with the low-mid class. What would happen if the US banned Facebook?!

The Arab countries rule under the Islamic law ((Debatable!)), but for the most part, here are the banned sites:

Pornography, nudity and sexually explicit content.
The entire Israel country code top-level domain
Certain media-sharing websites. (A lot of torrent sites are banned)
Anti-Islamic websites. (Including a lot of Shia sites)
Websites criticizing the United Arab Emirates (such as UAEprison and Arab Times)
Anonymous proxy sites (such as vtunnel, pzeg, etc.)
Gay and Lesbian Rights websites (such as Gaydar, Mogenic etc.)
Numerical IP address links (for example, http://10.11.1.1/)
Voice over IP services providers' websites (such as Skype, Vonage) ((Skype does work, although the site itself is banned))
Gambling sites
Firearms and drugs dealers

4Chan and Danborou are blocked here as well. Youtube, Megaupload and Deviant Art were blocked before but open now.

I am going to completely agree with Google's Eric Schmidt: this bill is beyond draconian. I understand that parents want to protect their children from much of the questionable content of the internet. I understand the concern of companies who are slowly losing millions of dollars as internet piracy causes consumers to shy away from actually purchasing their products. But this bill is so far over the line that its gonna send the state of free speech in the world back into the dark ages. The United States was created on a foundation of freedom (yes, I'm pulling out that card) and censorship, especially online, of this caliber can not be tolerated. The internet is not something that big business can just go "yeah, we don't like the direction this is going it, let's start again." For better or worse, it is what it is, and it needs to be protected at all costs.
