Does it irritate you when people say DB was poorly written?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

I can't help but feel the exact same thing is happening now but with the series reversed, bringing up what one considers to be bad series in order to make the other one look good by comparison.

If they're talking about Dragon Ball Z then I somewhat agree with them, but it's not horrible or poorly written.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

My teachings are more along the lines of self defense. I'm not telling him to go out and say Dragonball is better then Bleach but rather what to do when people provoke him.

Not to mention, for a man writing by the seat of his pants it could've been MUCH worse. I'm surprised it turned out as well as it did.
Pretty much this. I don't see how a fan can really say otherwise, since by definition they know the series strengths and faults better than an outside observer.

Just like Dragon Ball since Chapter #4.

The problem is that a lot of people who get irritated with comments like that are using their sentimental and emotional connections to the show. Why? Would you say it was well-written? It's riddled with plot holes, and everyone admits that Akira Toriyama was like, "Ehh, I'm lazy. Ehh, I don't remember some characters' names. Ehh, I'll just write this cop-out." The entire Boo arc does not make sense. Raditz saying that planet Vegeta was destroyed three years prior, etc.

Was it a great STORY? Yes. It was freaking epic. What other story deals with the entire universe, heavens, hell, and the battle to save it all? No other story does. But to say that it was well-written is not really accurate.

Totally agree. Fans do tend to be super loyal, which can lead to this mentality that what they love is above criticism, which simply is not an objective mindset to have.

However, Raditz saying that Vegeta blew up three years prior is a FUNimationism, not a Toriyamaism. Throw the man under a bus, but at least don't give him the blame for other people's crappy writing skills.

Yeah, I don't want to beat a dead horse, but those anime/dub-isms really don't help the matter when the original manga has enough plotholes and inconsistencies.

A lot of misinformation and arguments would disappear if more people read the original comic.

Would I be wrong in presuming that the anime is more known and accessible than the manga? Since I didn't even realize DB had a manga until my sister bought it for my 8th birthday or something.

In the US, no it's not wrong to presume that at all. It's true. A majority of the people that know of Dragonball know it though the anime when it was on Toonami(and maybe these days Kai and the Video Games). I'm sure there are people who know of a manga but I doubt they wanted to read it. If they did, they are most likely here or on some other "hardcore" Dragonball site.

This. Dragon Ball did exactly what it tried to accomplish, nothing more. I think one of the reasons for Dragon Ball's great success is, that it never tried to be more than it is.

Uh...Bleach does have a plot. It stay as still as the general plot for Naruto does (a kid sets out to earn respect and change the world he lives in) and tends to stick to story arcs like Dragon Ball, but a plot and continuing plot threads are there.

Anyhow, general statements like "Dragon Ball is poorly written" don't bother me. Maybe a specific example would and I'd discuss why, but otherwise I try not to care.

I wish it was that simple to convince them!
It's not about conving them, it's about convincing everyone else. In attempt to make this video Dragonball related, pretend Dragonball is vanilla ice cream and Bleach is chocolate:

Well I never understood plot of Bleach. It was like the writer spilled soup on the scripts. So chaotic that it is boring at the same time  I can't see how anyone can compare this thing to Yu Yu Hakusho, which was great Shonen with funny plot twist :D I was amused about reading kaidan story and then boooom, fighting shonen goes right away.

Bleach's plot really isn't difficult to understand (unless you watch the filler for some unfathomable reason).

It doesn't bother me at all when people say that DB was poorly written (or my other favorites Bleach, One Piece and Naruto), because that's just their own opinion and it's fine for them to feel that way. I don't share their sentiments, but I don't let it get to me or affect my enjoyment of the series at all.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!
