Re: Sean Schemmel confirms Buu Saga dubbing in interview
I completely agree, "Teen" Gohan is one of my biggest Dragon Ball peeves.
People complain about Clickenbeard overall, though.
I can understand if they think he is a teenager, they would see her voice as strange during the Cell arc. They were made to believe that he is a teenager even to this day with the video games, it is kind of saddening.

So mondo lame.
Re: Sean Schemmel confirms Buu Saga dubbing in interview
Not surprisingly, the DB Wiki refers to that young version of Gohan as "teen" occasionally. I guess being a teenager starts earlier than 13 for some people. Not sure why it's so difficult to call him "Cell Games Gohan." Anyway, DB characters are not often modeled accurately in regards to their age (for obvious reasons). Gohan is a good example since he often looks too strong for his age.GotenDaisuki wrote:I completely agree, "Teen" Gohan is one of my biggest Dragon Ball peeves.

Anyway, I doubt we will have to worry about any "I hate Gohan's girly voice" issue during the Buu saga since it will be Hebert. But if they modify any other voice, there will be some backlash.

To further point out how Kara Edwards will most likely be back as Goten and Videl, here is a 2011 convention video I saw a while back of Edwards explaining how disappointed she and Kyle Hebert were from not reprising their roles due to Kai's end point (which she incorrectly blames on FUNimation for only licensing Kai up to that point rather than Toei cancelling the series). According to her, she would "give anything to go back now 10 years later..." and re-voice her characters through Kai with much more acting experience at her disposal.
It really points out how passionate she is with her first roles as Goten and Videl, and how her return for the Buu arc of Kai is practically a no-brainer.

I hope every returning funimation actor has that kind of passion.xXInfinite026Xx wrote:CaBrPi wrote:I'm pretty sure Kara Edwards and Laura Bailey will be back. Oh! And how could I forget Number 18! For the life of me I cannot fathom why they replaced Meredith McCoy with whoever they got to be Number 18 for Kai, she is just as pitiful as the new Gohan and Bulma...all 3 sounded like they just phoned it in like none of them were even trying...if anybody knows why they replaced McCoy that'd be great.

Say what you will about Clinkenbeard's 18 but her Gohan and Rial's Bulma are better than Nadolny or Vollmer respectively. Hell, I love the characters more because of them.Kakarot88 wrote: she is just as pitiful as the new Gohan and Bulma...all 3 sounded like they just phoned it in like none of them were even trying...
Re: Sean Schemmel confirms Buu Saga dubbing in interview
It's hard to deny that Clinkenbeard's performance as Gohan is quality stuff, but I'll always have a fondness for Nadolny and think she's an underrated actress; I particularly enjoyed her Cell Games/Super Saiyan 2 work as she really sounded like a boy who was on the edge of puberty. I like her Goku as well and the distinction she made between her Gohan and Goku, though I'd like to hear more of Clinkenbeard's work as Goku.
Clinkenbeard's 18 though was a huge improvement on Z's, in my opinion. She sounds playful and like a young adult, whereas Z 18 just sounded bored and in her 30s or so. Bulma...I don't particularly miss Vollmer shrieking into a mic. Someone here mentioned how Rial's performance gave Bulma a warmth that wasn't really seen before in the English version, and I totally agree.

Clinkenbeard also did 18 in Kai! Now it all makes sense! Now I know why I don't like it! Well, I respect your opinion as well as everyone else who enjoys Clinkenbeard's performance different strokes for different folks, thanks for the info.matt0044 wrote:Say what you will about Clinkenbeard's 18 but her Gohan and Rial's Bulma are better than Nadolny or Vollmer respectively. Eh, I like Clinkenbeard and McCoy's 18 about equally. Clinkenbeard has a wider range (though she plays it fairly close to the vest with 18) and better acting chops. However, I also enjoyed McCoy's dry, annoyed 18. She radiated attitude and it went well with Chuck Huber's 17.

He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Re: Sean Schemmel confirms Buu Saga dubbing in interview
Different opinions yes, but from what I see Vollmer can't act at all and Nadonly is so raspy she fits right with Linda Young in the smokers voice category. Clinkenbeards 18 matches the japanese voice. Merdith sounds like a 30 year old hooker. I agree Clinkenbeard ain't great as Gohan, but still better than Nadolny. Rial sounds similar Vollmer but with better acting. Sean Schemmel says he can barely tell the difference when I met him.Kakarot88 wrote:Clinkenbeard also did 18 in Kai! Now it all makes sense! So someone who's 30 is clearly way too old for you to even comprehend being a part of the show?

For a long time, Bulma was my least favourite character. Then I realised I just hated Tiffany Vollmer's voice.

Wait what? Any age can watch dragonball and enjoy it. I said Merideth makes 18 sound like she is 30. 18 is a teenager and Meredith makes her sound too old. The voice actor can be any age as well, but when a teenager sounds like a grown woman, that is just weird.VegettoEX wrote:So someone who's 30 is clearly way too old for you to even comprehend being a part of the show?

I dunno, I think most teenagers sound like adults by the time they look like adults.
18 is at least in her older teens, if not in her early 20s.

She is portrayed as a young teen in the japanese version. So I don't think she is in her early twenties. I think she is 17 or 18CaBrPi wrote:I dunno, I think most teenagers sound like adults by the time they look like adults.

McCoy sounded fine. I knew girls in high school who had deep voices like her's. Colleen doesn't sound like a teenager, either. For that matter, neither does Huber.

I accept Colleen because she sounds very similar to the Japanese voice. I wasn't much of a fan of Huber as he sounds old compared to the Japanese voice as well. McCoy isn't even close.ABED wrote:McCoy sounded fine. I knew girls in high school who had deep voices like her's. Colleen doesn't sound like a teenager, either. For that matter, neither does Huber.

To be fair, they were experimented on by Gero. He may've altered their vocal chords.
Huber's improved delivery was definitely a great surprise for me who HATED that damn whisper delivery.

I personally compare to the Japanese (if that wasn't already obvious) and 18 can sound young there, but so old in english.matt0044 wrote:To be fair, they were experimented on by Gero. He may've altered their vocal chords.

Re: Sean Schemmel confirms Buu Saga dubbing in interview
The characters can have different voices from their Japanese counterparts. I like McCoy because she was a good actress and the voice was distinct. I can't really pick 18's original voice out of a lineup. She was a fine actress but nothing distinct about the voice, and the Japanese actress doesn't sound like a teenager either.
