No need to shout. Toei never gave text to Funimation. Get it? Sure, it's a part of the show, but Funimation never had it for any releases. The Level sets don't have it for this reason. It's just a minor problem. So, by now we shouldn't be nitpicking since most of us already owns Dragon Box which contains texts and NEPs.Gaffer Tape wrote:But again, it's not an extra. Just to mention Dragon Box 2 is here for a good price http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B002Y0KR7A/ they seem to have a supplier that may be able to get it to them within a week or two. Worth a shot if your desperate... Like me.

I'm not shouting. That would be caps. I'm just adding emphasis. But the fact of the matter is that each release stands alone, so what the Dragon Boxes have has no bearing on the level sets. Also, I know it's not FUNimation's fault, but I'm not laying blame, just stating the facts. Regardless of the reasoning behind it, it's still a flaw. You might consider it minor enough to not care. That's fine. I consider it a bigger deal. But the fact is that it's there, and whether it's Toei's fault or FUNimation's fault is irrelevant.DragonBalllKaiHD wrote:No need to shout. That said, the level sets also have problems in regards to picture quality: the crushed blacks and lesser quality film prints. So it's not just a black and white issue of what's better in my mind.

Alright, I get your reasoning. I don't have problem with that. But I do think the Level sets' picture quality is superior to Dragon Box. As you can see, the Dragon Box has noticeable blurry to it, while the Level sets are a lot sharper. Look at Vegeta's hair. It looks too smudged. And the Level sets are a lot closer to the original broadcast version aired in Japan.

Do you actually like the grain? Does it really look better to you?Aaaand that's where I make my exit.
Question: would you prefer to watch Naruto or Bleach or (insert your favored anime here) with grain added to the picture?

Re: Need an opinion on orange bricks
Must be NTSC as the Dragon Box from Funimation was a consistent region 1 and 4 release. I have placed a order for it, hopefully by the grace of God they can send one out to me. I really don't want to be forced to pay some 'asswipe' on eBay my whole life savings.IIMaxII wrote:Is that NTSC? My YouTube
Soppa Saiyjins from Dorgou Ballru Zetto is my favorite transformation everah, especially when Trounksoru did it in front of Seru and when Bejita did it when he faced Jingonigen-hachigo. But for real, I use the FUNi pronunciation. - Soppa Saia People

Re: Need an opinion on orange bricks
Yes. It's sharper, has more detail, and I love that natural, physical look. The smeared look is blurry, and so you just see splotches where the grain was, and that looks really nasty. Kai did a good job, but it's not as sharp as the Japanese Dragon Boxes even in HD. It's around the r1 Dragon Box in terms of detail, and though I like the additional darker details a lot, I do miss the texture of the film.Zenkai wrote:Do you actually like the grain? It would be amazing though if Toei had 35mm negatives for the entire series though.
In general, I find newer, digitally animated shows tend to look flat as a result of going digital, and that the grain and texture adds some depth to the image.
No. It's not how they intended for them to look, and any filters added would only be an artificial alteration, much like the noise reduction on the Z sets. Though, it's awesome if it's done intentionally, like the new Trigun. It was done digitally, but they added a fine layer of digital grain to the picture to give it an old school, gritty vibe, and it worked very well (though I haven't seen the film, just screenshots and bits of footage). I wish that was done way more often, but if it isn't, adding grain in is about the same as removing it from film.Zenkai wrote:Question: would you prefer to watch Naruto or Bleach or (insert your favored anime here) with grain added to the picture?
I suppose a "closer to home" example would also be 300. If I recall, grain was added in post production to help the atmosphere of the film. Using DVNR on that would be directly going against the original intention of the film.

I'm tempted to buy this Dragon Box 2 to then re-sell it, I'll have to consider quickly whether or not I shall.

The grain doesn't bother me as much as it did 5 or so years ago. In fact, I think the blu-ray release looks very good, even though there is some grain.
On a related note, does the pinkness of the dragon box bother you at all? Look at the screenshots that DragonBallKaiHD posted. The dragon box looks markedly pinker than the others.
Re: Need an opinion on orange bricks
It always had that red tint on the air here on Cartoon Network.

Re: Need an opinion on orange bricks
The colours of the Dragon Boxes can be slightly changed by modifying the settings on the HDTV, so in my case, it was never pinky and I thoroughly enjoyed every single episode of the boxes, some more (Buu comical episodes) than (Pre-Cell Games) others.
Canadian Amazon has you covered.
Edit: Purchased Dragon Box 2, well, if they still have a copy in stock. Fingers crossed.
