I've not really seen anything of the 90's series except for clips and an AMV - what exactly is so bad about it, if I might ask?
Either way though, if Discotek were to put it out, I'd probably get it to see for myself. I'd rather have the original series and would hope they would get that too, but I'll take more Slump anyway I can get it.
MagicBox wrote:May I ask how exactly Herms got involved with this release (provided he's allowed to answer)? Did he contact Discotek and volunteer his assistance once he found out they'd licensed the movies, or vice versa? Were they really open to the idea of you helping out?
This just seems like a pretty big deal to me. I mean, just imagine if Discotek decides to take a chance on the 90s Dr. Slump show someday and the Kanzenshuu staff helps out with the Dragon Ball episodes!
Oh man, if it were anything as comprehensive as the notes/extras on the Lupin stuff Discotek puts out are...it would be
glorious.

The basic concept behind the series is "Hey, Toriyama's original Dr. Slump is really old and outdated, let's redo it, hip it up and turn it into the kind of stuff that resonates with modern tastes". Bad enough when it was new, and the "modern tastes" it was trying to appeal to aren't exactly modern anymore anyway, so it doesn't even serve its original purpose. It's a 20 year old show aimed at the kind of people who thought a 10 year old show was too old for them.
The series has mostly gone quietly ignored since it ended, and all modern Dr. Slump stuff is based off the original anime rather than the remake. There's a good reason for that.

Arale with brown hair always perplexed me. Why make the design more boring??

Maybe to make her more standard-ish I too didn't like Arale-chan as a brunette it just wasn't the original one which I'd remember from the 80's series plus another reason to prefer the authentic series that came before.
I wouldn't really care about the "New Dr. Slump" series if they released it in English as I've got no interest for that one.

I just watched the 90s opening. It was one of the most obnoxious things I've ever seen. It was literally like a Dr. Slump anime had sex with Saved by the Bell and THAT was their love child.
The epitome of, "trying too hard," IMHO.

I actually like the first opening of the 90s series...
The rest of them, though...
I want the 80s series, but beggars can't be choosers. I'll take anything Discotek can get (especially if it means I can get those DB crossover episodes in good quality).

YEESSSS. I've been obsessively checking RightStuf every day to see when they'd listed it and just checked it earlier, but apparently it was just added since then. I can't believe it's gonna be that cheap. I'm definitely making an order for it along with some other stuff soon, and I hope a lot of other people will follow suit so we can get the other movies and hopefully the series too.

oh! That is exciting! It may cost more, but I'm still planning on preordering directly from Discotek. I hope this is a successful release from them!

For UK residents here's United Publications that has it for £19.90 in total.
United Publications -
https://www.up1.co.uk/Details/C2139
I've pre-ordered from them as of right now and hope that this release gets enough support because I really would like the 80's series to get an official English release. Subs would be perfectly fine as I couldn't careless for an English dub, but it'd be a bonus considering more customers would pick this up.
By the way, old doesn't mean it's bad or else
Dragon Ball in its entirety would be awful by that logic.

According to people who order and live in US they get it like a week earlier than its release date. That's pretty cool.

Yeah, RS is pretty good about pulling that feat off, something I'm hoping will happen when I finally get to ordering this myself later this month/early next month.

Aww man I love older anime and I guess I'm what you might call a younger anime fan, specifically the art style's, more the 70's and 80's than the 90's tho. Sadly I haven't seen a lot of older anime or read a lot of older manga, even though I'd like to.

I recently rewatched that old Great Saiyaman episode and OMG that was so distracting.
Anyway I might have to pick up that Dr. Slump disc when I'm back in the States for the summer.

I'm the exact same way so don't feel alone

It's rare that I'll actually watch something new. lol
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

United Publications UK has it currently for £17.20 normally priced £19.99 and with UP the customs' fees aren't to be worried about because they take care of it.

I hope this is a success so that Discotek sees to it that people want the original 80's series too, well they've said so in the comment section on their Facebook page already too.

I'm happy this topic seems to be allowed, especially since
Herms was involved with the Discotek release. I just finished reading all 18 volumes to get ready for this set. And hey, the last few volumes have little
Dragon Ball doodles!
Has the company made any statement regarding which masters they received from Toei? Are we getting the "Slump The Box: Movies" boxset transfers?

Read the thread.
Herms wrote:Basically, someone else did all the hard work of actually subtitling the movies, and all I had I do was look over the subs and make any changes I thought were necessary. Changing character name spellings to fit name puns, helping with references to the main series that went over the translator's head, etc.
