Re: Toonami will air the Cooler Movie on May 24
Music is always weird. Just to use an example personal to me, The TV drama House used the song "Teardrop" by Massive Attack as its opening theme, but in most parts of the world, it's replaced by the show's ending theme, an original piece composed for the show. But reruns in America retain "Teardrop". And then the show was added to Netflix a month ago, and "Teardrop" is absent. (There's also a replacement of a few seconds of Family Guy footage with a generic cartoon in one episode)
And anyway, couldn't we be jumping the gun on all this? The trailer using the original Kikuchi score isn't 100% indicative of what's going to air.

Subs will also never happen because casual tv watchers prefer dubs. It's why foreign movies always dub when they have a major release then just releasing them subbed. I remember when Crouching Tiger came out in theaters, people were mad that the movie was subbed and they didn't want to read when watching a movie.

Re: Toonami will air the Cooler Movie on May 24
The Wonder Years has avoided release on DVD (until now-Time-Life announced they'll be releasing it with a stated goal of getting every piece of music licensed) because it's pretty well-known that no one will buy the show on DVD if the music is missing. Tour of Duty and Wiseguy sold like crap in part because of horrid music replacement (that both shows had faded into obscurity because syndication without the music was a massive failure is the bigger reason), and Fox totally scrapped plans to fully release WKRP in Cincinnati (which was syndicated for a decade with the music intact) because the first season sold absolutely terribly. All of these shows (and China Beach, which Time-Life also released intact on DVD) had licensed music as a way to establish character and authenticity, but no one anticipated home video as a monster because only Star Trek got a complete release (and even there, "City on the Edge of Forever" had its licensed song removed in the '80s for a good decade because Paramount was cheap). Nowadays, the royalties include DVDs......unless the studio is cheap (Fox and Universal have been the biggest culprits in this regard).Gaffer Tape wrote:I can't say I'm sure about these accusations of royalties in this context. I'm not saying I'm an expert, but it just doesn't make sense to me based on evidence I've seen in throughout my life. To take an example, there's a show I loved called The Wonder Years. I grew up watching it. To anyone who doesn't know it's a show that takes place in the late '60s-early '70s and uses A LOT of music from the time period. I mean, there are so many famous songs in every single episode. Its soundtrack really helped capture the feel of the time period, but, at the same time, it's caused a major problem. The show has never been released to DVD because of the royalties involved in doing so, and they refuse to release the show without the music. You may think that's proving the point, but the fact of the matter is, the show has been almost continuously rerun on a multitude of networks for over twenty years now. And the music is always intact. Do you honestly think if they had to pay to use the music every single time it aired that this show would ever see the light of day again? Would any media project EVER use licensed music?
With that said, there's no reason why one should automatically expect music licensed for a foreign dub of a film to stay in the film, as dubbing studios usually aren't that cash-rich (the profit margin isn't all that high), and the practice has become passe (and really was when Movie 5 got dubbed, if we're going to be honest). The songs were added to call attention to frankly non-essential releases (with the specials being the closest to essential to the series' story). Now, the music is just dated and sad, and a pale equivalent to the songs actually produced for various Dragon Ball episodes and films.

This seems positively absurd to me.TheBalishChannel wrote:I'm not getting "bent out of shape" over the whole thing but I do find it extremely disappointing regardless considering I just signed a two-year contract with my cable provider in anticipation for this one event alone, believe it or not.
Why on Earth would you enter in to a two-year contract with a service provider when you could simply purchase the version you remember - exactly as-is, guaranteed 100% - for ~$15 new or even ~$7 used in great condition?

I can see why this bothers people, but the movie wasn't created with those songs in mind, unlike the Wonder Years, or wrestling events where the dvd's replace the songs just so Vince doesn't have to pay royalties. If Sandman comes out, he better come out to Enter Sandman, not some generic junk.

Re: Toonami will air the Cooler Movie on May 24
I honestly don't see what the big deal is one way or the other myself. If someone enjoys the original score, than great, they've discovered how awesome the original version is! If someone enjoys the rock score, cool, they enjoy a lot of the same kind of music that I do. And if...*gasp*...they enjoy both versions (madness, I know?!), then they're pretty much exactly where I'm at and just enjoy Dragon Ball for Dragon Ball.
Now, that aside, I do agree that, to quote Kaboom, replacement scores are a pretty archaic practice. I really wish it would stop happening with kid's anime when it gets brought over here (especially Digimon, since it's original scores are always awesome), but at the same time it's not something that's going to make or break a show for me probably. The original is always going to still be out there, especially in these days of widespread internet, so it's not like it's possible to actually completely hide the existence of an original from someone. And as far as DBZ goes, if some fans never actually switch the audio on their sets to the original score and just leave it with the Falcouner one, then so be it - that's their prerogative.
Anyway, I've got my DVR set for this even though I have it on DVD, because despite my not really caring one way or the other which score is aired (though it really would be pretty cool to hear the original on a broader network than Nicktoons), I am pretty interested to see which way it goes, as well as wanting to support any possible return of the franchise to Toonami, even if it's just the occasional movie. Also, dat promo...goosebumps man, goosebumps.

Heck, the more versions there are just gives me a reason to watch it more! I totally enjoy the US scores, and the bits I've heard of the Japanese score. (Haven't seen Z and GT with original yet, only DB). Also, I can understand people hating on replacements when 4Kids was involved, because they didn't offer the original at all. Most of the anime they've gotten their hands on make us rely on fansubs to see the original. The Kirby anime still doesn't have those, though. I'm still looking for translators to get it completed, but to no avail. So, many people forget that Dragon Ball and I think every other dub done by Funimation gives us a luxury that other series don't get.
I'm living abroad, so I'm not going to see this airing, and I have the Movie Pack, anyway. As for the score, I'm merely curious as to which one they'll select. Since it's a midnight run, it'll presumably be uncut, which means it's quite possible they'll air it with the original score. Correct me if I'm wrong, but would this mark the first time the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball Z (pre-Kai) airs with the Kikuchi score on US Television? This doesn't count the Ocean dubs of Z Movies 1-2.

On-topic, if this does have the original score it'd be really interesting, would this be the first DBZ (not kai) related thing to air on tv with original OST?

I don't know why you wouldn't count them, since they were produced by FUNimation (in conjunction with Pioneer, but still).Valerius Dover wrote:This doesn't count the Ocean dubs of Z Movies 1-2.

I wonder why they pick DBZ Movie 5 instead of Movie 8 or 12? Those seem to be more popular with the American DBZ fandom.

I dunno, Cooler seems to be a pretty popular villain. He was among the first to always start getting included in video games anyway. And as far as movie 8 goes, it's a question of time I think. This movie is really just airing as a block-filling deal while two shows take a break, so they need something that can easily fit within an hour, and movie 8 couldn't do that without them cutting out some time.Hellspawn28 wrote:I wonder why they pick DBZ Movie 5 instead of Movie 8 or 12? I know Funimation produced them, but I meant with the Funimation cast. It would be the first time DBZ Movie 5 airs with the original score on a Saturday, in May, on the 24th, in 2014.

So tonight's the night! Who's watching? Also, there's something I just remembered: Kai had it's Nicktoons premiere on this day three years ago, and now a DBZ movie is airing on Toonami. How cool is that?

Seeing X-Men instead.
Let me know how it is. Will it be the Japanese OST?

I guess this was a sign of DBZ coming back to Toonami afterall. I hope more DBZ movies get air on Toonami. I wonder if they can air Fusion Reborn uncut now? Fusion Reborn did edit out some of the blood and the Hitler moments on TV back in 2006.
