I thought this was an absolutely fascinating read. Great narrative and definitely made me think of things I haven't ever before. Although I do walk away disagreeing largely with what the cause of the changes were. I do agree we see a change in both characters. They " why " is different for me.
Goku has always looked at stronger fighters with the mind to challenge them. I think the Buu Saga is the first time he's ever experienced power he absolutely cannot touch. Cell was the first example. We see Goku accept his fate and his role, he cannot defeat someone. We've seen this happen with Goku on different occasions. Against Vegeta, he had to admit that man, this Vegeta is a beast. Against Freeza he was consistently wowed by Freeza's power.
When Goku is surpassed but still has a chance, he has a, " Well I gave it my best shot, this guy is just that incredible " feel to him. No regrets. We see this same concept against Cell. Goku tries his hardest for a year, but still realizes he cannot match him and has no regrets. This is of course backed by his belief that Gohan will finish the job he cannot do. So Goku is always somewhere close to finishing the job or has someone else prepared to do it. There is always an " end game ". Even if it fails. He has a chance.
Now what's different here is that this is the first time Goku has absolutely no chance. At the ultimate height of his power, Goku is completely helpless to the powers that are at the fusion level.
We see the absolute shock of Super Buu's power. Then we see how awed he is by Gohan's power. These are facial reactions we never really see in the entire manga. We never see wowed Goku, that's generally the job of everyone else in the story. But the end of the series dictates that Goku is the one who is completely overwhelmed by other beings power. This is a very rare role for Goku to play.
The disbelief facial reactions start with Super Buu. We even see Goku jealous of Gotenks ability to not only top his power, but to be able to achieve a form that took his entire life to find. And they did it effortlessly. A week and a half in the Rosat and they have matched his abilities and dwarfed his own power. Goku is just like damn. Gohan's power being brought out in a day and completely dwarfing his own is another example. Goku is completely shell shocked. He's never been this outgunned, by this many people. He's in a complete whirlwhind.
But he can rest his confidence on Gotenks and Gohan because he has faith they will get it done. He doesn't consider himself of this world and has let go of these concerns. Until Gohan starts getting wrecked of course. Goku gets his life back. Now all of a sudden, the weight is back on Goku's shoulders.
As we can see when Buutenks defuses, Goku is let down that they don't have to fuse. Goku wants to be in the game. He wants to be in there. It is so weird for Goku to be such a non factor with no immediate means of becoming relevant.
We see Goku's desperation begin with Buuhan. We've never seen Goku react so desperately as he has against Buuhan. Even against Buutenks he looks like a child, crapping himself at the thought of having to fight Buutenks. Against Buuhan, Goku is about to fuse with freaking Mr. Satan of all people. He's running around completely crapping himself and is desperate and being foolish.
Vegeta appears. His chances go from slim and none to having a real chance. Goku realizes his only hope is for Vegeta to fuse with him. He is proven right.
I'm tired of typing right now, I'll continue on about Goku and get to Vegeta after I get some feedback from this post first.

Who gets told it's his fault for being so careless? Goku.
Who has to live with that similar to how he wanted to make Freeza live with the fact he'd been beaten by what he considered trash, and have to live with that shame? Goku.
Freeza got the perfect revenge.

Thanks for reading through all of that haha. Well I don't have my " critical thinking " hat on right now, but I will say, I absolutely love when someone's passion for the series comes out like this. Really thinking things through. DIvergent thinking. If you enjoy that sort of stuff, you realize how rare it is to see someone come up with anything original. DBZ theory is one of my favorite subjects and has always been an enjoyable pastime of mine. Always nice to see others out there who are the same!
