What are the good things to come out of modern DBZ?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

I'll go ahead and throw the hypothesis out there that it's impossible to hate Gine because Gine's not enough of a character to elicit any emotion out of anyone.

I will say I hate the idea of Gine, namely that she and Bardock as presented in DB- are "special." They're some of the few Saiyans who form family units and attachments and crap like that. I don't mind there being Saiyans like that, don't get me wrong. I just don't like that it suggests that Goku is special because his parents were also anomalies. It's the same reason I don't like Episode of Bardock's take. Goku is a special Super Saiyan, so, guess what? His dad is too!

Can I hate her for existing and being part of such an abysmal product? That's probably okay, right?

Yeah. I'd definitely file that under hating the idea of Gine or hating her out of principle.

I don't like the idea that the second female Saiyan we meet turns to be fluffy, kind and too clumsy to do the battle stuff and having to be saved... That few cells made my clichemeter explode. You basically expect her to take Sailor Moon Tiara out of her pocket... wrong, Usagi was way more badass and had a reason to exist besides cooking and having a baby in a barrel.
I think I wouldn't mind if she had been proven to be outsider- read compared to "standard" warrior females. But she is the only one and turns to be all about stereotype. In that case I feel that Toriyama just couldn't come with anything besides those stereotypes.
Plus all "special family" crap Gaffer Tape wrote about.

Yea he's up there for me as well. 2nd favorite for me (Vegeta is and always will be my favorite character).

Anyway, for me it's been:

Dragon Ball Kai
Beerus and Whis (without them, specifically Beerus, BoGs wouldn't have been nearly as enjoyable)
DB Heroes
Animation (though it can look spotty at times)
Jaco the Patrolman

I enjoyed a few things about the modern renaissance of Dragonball. The short film from 2008 and Battle of Gods definitely as well as Dragonball Z Kai. I kind of hoped they would do the same treatment for the first half of the anime. Oh and of course the video games . . . even if they become more quantity over quality albeit Dragonball Online and Xenoverse is a real step in the right direction. Jaco The Galactic Patrolman and Dragonball Minus was interesting to see the return of Akira Toriyama to creating manga though I enjoyed the former more than the latter.

I'll restrict my list to "manga and animation that have come out of Japan since 2000." I don't have the patience to go through and rank everything from video games to tie-in products to what foreign distributors like FUNimation have released.

My "good" list...

The Kanzenban, Neko Majin, The 2006 Crossovers, & Jaco The Galactic Patrolman
Basically, any new Toriyama manga that we've seen, I've loved. The Kanzenban ending was a huge improvement, the crossovers with KochiKame and One Piece were hilarious (and even a little touching), Neko Majin was enjoyable (and probably VERY therapeutic for Toriyama), and Jaco was everything I could have asked for. I certainly don't think "Dragon Ball Minus" is perfect, but I like certain aspects of it enough to include it here as well.

Dragon Ball Full Color
I dislike a couple of the colors they chose, but man oh MAN does this thing look gorgeous. Damn you, Viz.

The Jump Super Anime Tour Special
I still love everything about it, even now. This isn't just nostalgia talking. I revisit this special all the time. It was exactly what we needed in 2008 and it's still relevant today.

"The God And The God"
Everything about the 2013 movie (from the pre-release hype to the constant news updates to the fan reactions to the film itself) made me happy to be a fan. I look back on that year with 100% fondness.

Wow, I had four entries on my "lame" list and four entries on my "good" list. The 2015 movie will be the tiebreaker!

It really takes away from the original transformation too. The amazing thing was that Goku wasn't special at all but surpassed all of the other Saiyans. Vegeta had special privileges, Goku shouldn't have any. Goku, originally, was lucky enough to be sent to Earth.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

+ Toriyama getting involved again!
+ Battle of Gods
+ The 2008 special
+ DBZ Kai (because of new dubs)
+ Episode of Bardock
+ Plan to eradicate the Super Saiyan
+ Full color comics
+ All the news!
+ Interviews with voice actors (from all kind of contries for example France and Japan)
+ Some of the video games.

Only thing I'm disappointed in is that Toei's being cheap with the animation most of the time, and Dragon Ball Minus...

Everything Toriyama says in recent interview. That man is hilarious.

Dragonball Evolution.

That utter embarrassment is why Toriyama started giving a shit recently. Or so I heard. I doubt there would be a a BoG or revival of F if he didn't up and care again.

The new animation is bad, but some of the Heroes anime trailers are pretty good, especially the GT ones. Does anyone know who animated the Heroes openings?
