Overall, I'd say it ranges between a C+ and a B- fairly consistently, episode by episode.
Favorite Movies: Alien, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, The Thing, Evil Dead, The Land Before Time
Favorite Shows: Cardcaptor Sakura, Doctor Who, Wallace and Gromit, Wakfu, Yu Yu Hakusho
Favorite Manga: Fullmetal Alchemist, Hunter x Hunter, Dragon Ball
Augenis wrote:The power level view into the series has trained a significant portion of the fan base into real life stereotypical members of the Freeza empire, where each and every individual is reduced to a floating number above their heads and any sudden changes to said number are met with shock and confusion.

Super...I try my hardest to find the good in it. Because bashing on it every week is just going to make me angry and bitter. It's not a very nice mindset. That, and I like to think that Toei at least TRIES to make the series good. Anyway, I ended up writing a mini-essay about my opinions on the entire series so far.

The Battle of Gods arc didn't really need to be stretched out that much, especially the first few episodes (3-5). Episode 6 was pretty well-paced, although Episode 7-10 were a bit slow again. Episode 11, 13 and 14 were pretty good episodes. But Episode 12 was stupid and I hate it because of the whole "destroying the universe" thing. It's going to bring up so many plot inconsistencies later on.

The slice-of-life transition episodes were great and all kind of necessary (besides the Mr. Satan one. But that had Goku getting fake-punched and picking up his tractor on the way back).

The Resurrection 'F' arc hasn't been the best in terms of quality, and I realised the whole Ginyu situation was just there for Vegeta fanservice, but I did like some of the character moments they put in. Stuff like Krillin losing his confidence, Goten and Trunks arriving, Piccolo's sacrifice and Gohan's reaction (yes, I actually liked that moment).

Episode 24 was pretty bad. Episode 25 was alright, but didn't have enough fighting. And I'm worried Toei is overusing Jaco. He's stopped being funny. Now he's just getting annoying. Too much of a good thing, you know?

All I hope is later on we get some kind of flashback to Goku and Vegeta's training inside Whis's staff. And perhaps having Goku acknowledge he screwed up once the Earth gets blown up. The whole moral was that it WAS his and Vegeta's fault for not taking Freeza seriously enough. That's the closest to a theme the movie has. If the arc doesn't try and expand on this, it's going to make it feel completely unnecessary.

As for the animation: it's alright. Sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's surprisingly good. We haven't had any of the latter since the BoG arc, but I'm not giving up hope just yet.

In fact, that just about sums up my opinion on Super. I know it has a lot of problems, but I'm not giving up hope yet.
I could have gotten into anything...and yet I chose the story aimed at young Japanese boys about martial arts, and later about super-powerful aliens punching each other really hard.

To be honest I haven't been watching it, but I have been following reviews and comments on it and it sounds like it's very mediocre. People are holding out hope for the Champa arc because we're heading into original material territory, but this is sounding more and more like the Star Wars prequels after The Phantom Menace received such a divisive reception, a lot of it being disappointment after it was hyped as a big franchise revival, much like Super. The hope was that Attack of the Clones would be better and that TPM was just a misstep; but it wasn't better, it ended up being worse. Given the precedent set by not only these two retellings but by Kai (which was also mediocre) and even GT (again, mediocre): I don't think Super is going to get any better. The stars are lining up for another Star Wars prequel-like mediocre revival bound to disappoint many fans. Perhaps in another decade we'll get a revival that does things right just like The Force Awakens.

It's pretty enjoyable so far. For someone who already saw BOG and ROF, I'm having fun.

While I think it's quite easily the weakest of the four original anime series (not sure where to put Kai in that regard) on a production level, and vastly inferior to the movie versions of its retread content so far (largely, I think, because the stories were designed to fit relatively short films, and Toriyama is very present in those scripts), it's still fun seeing Dragon Ball on a weekly basis. I don't take it seriously enough to really take issue with it. There have been some wonderful scenes here and there; I particularly love Whis and the Oracle Fish playing that strange light game just after Goku arrives on their planet--it really sets the stage for the next chapter of the series. Very cool. A well-directed moment.

On the other hand, it's really not a very good production. The animation and direction are largely quite weak (the direction here bothering me more). The fighting choreography and impact has been abysmal, and even though the action is more icing for me, it's a bit distracting considering how well previous series and even the recent films have sold it. What the actual fuck is with not explaining why the Pilaf gang is young; it honestly feels like someone was supposed to write that plot point into their debut, but no one caught its absence. So I'm not giving it a free pass. And Toriyama's charm is really missed in these weekly adaptations.

So, uh, we'll see. I can say I'm not at all bothered by the lighter tone, as I know some are. It's very clear this era of the series is all about Toriyama having fun, and we all know what that looks like (personally, I love it; your mileage may vary and I occasionally wonder what weekly content would look like with the kind of editorial arrangements he had at JUMP, but the series is so whimsy-based it's all felt right at home). Toei's execution just leaves something to be desired.

If I hadn't already seen BOG and ROF movies I would be a lot more interested in the two arcs. But really I think thats the only thing holding them down, people don't feel suspense because they already know whats going to happen.. once we hit universe 6 that wont be the case. When we get to the Universe 6 arc I think thats when things will kick off..

Fix and touch up some of the animation and add the funimation dub and soundtrack and release it to the Western audience and I think it will be fine, Japanese audience love it because those are the VA's and style they remember.. Not surprised that we can't appreciate it unless its our Va's and our music.

Granted its a lighter tone right now then DBZ but thats bound to change as it seems shit will be going down in the U6 arc.

We have been asking for a new series for years... don't screw it up by being the indecisive fan base we have always been.. just wait and see instead of complaining week in and week out... you could always wait until its released here in our own language and better animation... since thats the way you are meant to see it.

Supers Characters I rate a 9/10 - Simply because I never expected a tall guy with a staff and a purple cat to become some of my favourite characters, the characters that have been introduced over the past 2 years have been well received..

Super's Story I rate a 8/10 - Great concepts, great intro to the God saga.

Supers Tone I rate a 6.5/10 - It gets a little too lighthearted for me at times, However I'm confident we will get more serious later one.

Supers Animation/Fight Choreography I rate a 6/10 - Its great at times and then bad at times... will be fixed in the future... fights however do need to be longer and grittier.

About as cautiously optimistic as when the show began; I like what little original material we've gotten, and while the production values are usually slim (Sumitomo can do grandiose and that is about it), I will not moan about things I cannot change. Really, in my mind, the show has still just begun: the movie arcs are filler whose greatest crime will be taking up space on home releases. If you don't like them, if you have already seen the movies... don't watch them, it is just that simple. I have probably seen half of each (bowed out of 'F' two weeks ago) and its left me much happier with the show.

I'd say indecision is the way to characterize this series. First thing you see is "dragonball super" and an excellent opening sequence. Then you see a "previously on dragonball" segment with a dramatic DBZ remix bgm. Wait a second I thought we were in DB super? But ok, it's dramatic DBZ like. Then you see the episode title card with goofy light hearted music. Wait a second I thought we were just doing dramatic?

This is the whole show. Wait a second I thought we were doing new material? Nope retelling the movies. But no, it's in a slightly different way. But wait some things are too much the same when you have ample opportunity to flesh it out and change it up. MAKE A DECISION.

It just points to really really poor planning which shoots through straight to the abysmal animation and character models even. GT happened, they should have learned from it. But honestly going back to if I had seen GT for the first time, I'd prefer GT because at least the soundtrack is nice and its new material. This is just bad.

Say what you will about GT, it clearly has a lot of love put into it for what could easily have been a cheapo sequel running off the popularity of the manga and original anime. It took a bold direction, went high-concept and has a really distinct (and, I think, pleasant) style.

There was a voice to GT that I'd find it hard to argue is present in Super (unlike the movies, which are pretty firmly Toriyama, though writing with allowances for movie visuals rather than a serial manga).

I'll be interested to see reactions to Super down the line without full knowledge of its production, because I think it really does feel like the product of neither Toriyama alone nor a creative team at Toei (nor, for that matter, do its plots quite feel natural for a weekly serial). I'm fairly convinced that if you showed it to a party with no knowledge of its background, they'd sense something was a little off.

That is something I expect to change next arc, even if the production quality doesn't really improve. We'll finally be getting content written from the ground up for a weekly series.

That's assuming Toriyama wrote it as an arc and not a movie that'll get stretched out for the series by Toie.

The more likely scenario to me seems like he provided an outline built for a weekly series and Toei has fleshed it out into scripts largely independently (sans maybe a check for approval) from there. But I guess we'll see.

Super is already like the Force Awakens, its a mediocre retread of shit that was done better before (BoG) while not improving on stuff that desperately needed improvement (F). At least Super has enough people openly voicing their distaste for it where as TFA has everyone sucking its metaphorical balls even after making a thousand page list of all its flaws because its "like the classics!".
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

GT's first 20 episodes are boring as fuck compared to super.

and chapter 7 alone looks more interesting than the entirety of GT.
only things that actualy suck in super are animation at times and fighting geograhpy.

and yes , already knowing about the movies kills the fun watching super right now.
without that universe drama thing when goku and beerus fought i wouldnt even bothered watching it.
freeza vs goku right now is boring.

Each one has something the other needs, Super has a good story which is what Gt needed but gt had good animation and choreography which Super needs.

I wouldn't compare Super to The Force Awakens since reception to TFA has been mostly positive (and I thought TFA was good for what it was. It does have flaws, but they weren't game breaking flaws like the prequels' flaws). Super's reception so far has been very divisive, so it's not really the same situation.

In my eyes it very much is, they're both just copy pastes of stuff that came before that doesn't understand at all what made it work & didn't work because no one involved has a clue what they're doing. In the defense of Super, at least it never pretends like its more than the mediocrity it is while TFA is trying to sell everything in it as grand, amazing and it earned nothing of it. Not the emotional bits, not the character development, nothing.

Agree to disagree then. I don't want to turn this into a TFA debate.

GT does indeed have much better animation and art than Super but as for the fights I'd say that's debatable. GT fights were nothing special as far as I remember, wasn't it 80% ki blasts and a just a few kicks and punches? I don't recall any fight scene in GT being as good as some of the sequences of Goku vs Beerus in episodes 11, 13 and 14 of Super.

GT doesn't have better art/animation than Super. It is more consistent in it's mediocrity. The best drawn parts of GT are barely distinguishable from the worst. Super, on the other hand, does have lower points than GT, but it's high points not only blow it out of the water, but could probably be the best inthe entire series (sans movies, but even those are sometimes crap, Return of Cooler anyone?).

Regarding coreography, the Beerus vs Goku fight just leaves in the dust any fight from GT. Goku vs Freeza does suck, though and yeah, I probably take any main fight of GT over it, but even then, minor fights like Gohan vs Goten, Baby vs Uub suck.

Really, I enjoy GT more than most people, but the only way I can see people calling it better than Super is that they haven't watched it in a while.
