Vegeta hardly interacts with the z fighters outside of Goku and his son. Piccolo and Vegeta have similar backstories, would have been interesting to see them interact more.Doctor. wrote:Vegeta has a history with Kuririn, I suppose. He doesn't think too highly of the humans and the cyborgs haven't so much as registered on his radar since the Cell arc. Tenshinhan's lack of consistent socialising is an affliction that ails Vegeta as well. Next to his lack of involvement with them, Vegeta has a pretty unimaginative combat style. At least Tenshinhan could theoretically offer some dynamic fighting choreography with his Shiyoken, third eye perception, Dodonpa and other such abilities. A large part of Vegeta's attraction appears to stem from his Saiyan genealogy and the marketability of transformations. Take those away and what are you left with? A smaller sized replica of Tenshinhan and Piccolo except with hair on his head and less interesting abilities.
Also Freeza, obviously.

Vegeta also suggested Goku to use Gohan several times, like during the Kid Buu fight or for the Universe 6 tournament. Vegeta is well aware of Gohan's power as he's seen it first hand so many times.
The difference is Tenshinhan is a very serious character...in a series with two other very serious characters on the main cast like Vegeta and Piccolo. And as said, both Krillin and Yamcha get used for comic relief even when they're not fighting, you can't do that with Tenshinhan.

Re: What's up with Tenshinhan this arc?
Funny you say that. I was under the impression that especially during the android saga, Vegeta was openly insulting Krillin - the 'pass me a senzu bean' scene after #19 died, or when Krillin and Yamcha when talking about training before going to the Cell games. I always thought that Vegeta had a low opinion of Krillin because of his constant defeats and his cowardice.Doctor. wrote: Vegeta has a history with Kuririn, I suppose. Re: What's up with Tenshinhan this arc?
I don't know about that. He openly admitted that Kuririn was fast and skilled back in the Saiyan arc and thought he'd be of good use to him against Freeza (he says "us three," not "me and Kakarot's son"). Maybe he did a 180 in the Cell arc, I'm not sure.Nickolaidas wrote:Funny you say that. No, he really doesn't. Training with all of those guys doesn't really mean anything. He doesn't really have any personal connections to any of these people barring maybe Roshi. He did fight Goku twice, but he really is the only one you can even make a case for outside Roshi. Literally the only things Ten ever had with Goku were essentially their two fights, and after the 23rd Goku pretty much stopped interacting with Ten largely due to Ten being a loner himself. Even then, I'd argue Goku isn't all that close to Ten, and really all Ten has is maybe Roshi. My claim isn't ridiculous when I'm not wrong about most if not all of it. You listing things he's done with others doesn't really mean much because that didn't make his relationship with any of these guys any more personal, not to mention he becomes for the most part utterly irrelevant afterwards.Basako wrote:Ok, so Freeza has everyone except Ten and Roshi... That's just not true. Ten has a history with Goku, fought twice against him, once against Roshi. Fought against Piccolo Daimao somehow with Roshi and Goku, trained with Krilin, fought the saiyans with Krilin, Piccolo and Gohan, killed by Vegeta's partner, trained with Piccolo, Krilin, Gohan and Goku actively fought for his resurrection, fought 17, saved 18, fought Cell with Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo and Krilin, fought Boo with Gohan. Tien being a loner probably feels closer to everyone than they do to him. His level of interaction with them extends beyond others because hes a loner but in reverse they probably dont feel as close to him.Jigurashi wrote:No, he really doesn't. It probably didn't help matters that now the main cast all have families and kids while Tenshinhan decided to remain single his whole life. Assuming Tenshinhan isn't gay and hasn't revealed it after all this time.
Re: What's up with Tenshinhan this arc?
Your claim is ridiculous and it's wrong. You're saying that Tenshinhan is the one with the least relation with the others, below Freeza or 17. That's only possible using double standards. For example, saying Krilin has a bound with Vegeta for fighting together in Namek, but not with Ten, even if they fought together the saiyans and trained together for it. He goes his way as a loner, but the history counts, there are bounds and genuine care. He has been there in three of the four arcs in Super, that's not even history and it's more than we can say about 17. He is cold, but if that means a lack of relation with others, then don't have double standards, that would apply to Piccolo, 17, 18 and Vegeta too.Jigurashi wrote:No, he really doesn't. Filler with a capital F. Yes I know Super anime is canon. But you need to understand its not all the samw writer. Only one writer works on the main plot points. And thats Akira Toriyama. When a DBS writer has to come out and clarify to Roshi mess then you know it was a badly written and executed episode. In episode 90 Gohan and Piccolo had a plan. Piccolo was protected from Tenshinhan over and over while Goku did nothing to protect Tien. So Goku just like in the TOP is not a team player. And Tien was not hesistant to spar with Krillin. Krillin came in ignorant to the situation and was all bubbly. While Tien was aware that they were down a fighter. All he did was frown at Krillin which could be taken as "nows not the time." Lets have some perspective and not lie. And clearly those outside of Goku and Vegeta that havnt done much yet is because there time will be later closer to their elimination or they have a bigger role later. Piccolo is an example.Doctor. wrote:In his own episode, meant to showcase his prowess and leadership as a martial arts master, he got fooled, manipulated and later on punked by Roshi. Then before the tournament began, he was hesitant to spar with Kuririn. And now in the tournament, the only thing he seems to know how to do is repeat "Sasuga Muten Roshi-sama" over and over and over again.
I don't even like the guy but this is getting embarrassing. I wonder why they even decided to bring him if they're not doing anything with the character.

I always thought Vegeta has some kind of respect for Krillin, he did barely survive Nappa's rampage and they did fight together against Freeza and his forces. Him insulting him in the cell arc is just Vegeta being an ass like he always is. He has respect for Goku's strength but he still an asshole to him.
As for Tien, while I'm not sure what his role will be, he does always come off as the loner of the group. Heck even at the end of the cell arc he did say they probably won't meet again and flew off. I mean he did come back to save Gohan from Buu but that was about it.

Krilin and Gohan survived Nappa because Vegeta told him to wait three hours, who knows why. It's true Ten said they wouldn't see him again, but, apart from the time against Boo, there is also Super now. I mean, Beerus, RoF and Champa arcs. He retconed his own words. And why would Tenshinan even be afraid of a sparring match? It's not a battle, it's training. And considering he had no problem having a friendly match against Piccolo and Gohan it would make no sense for him to be afraid of Krillin.JulianStyles wrote:Filler with a capital F. I never knew what purpose Chiaotzu served other than following Tien around. Normally in Dragonball its the bigger guys following around and taking orders from the smaller guys, but not in this case.Basako wrote:Krilin and Gohan survived Nappa because Vegeta told him to wait three hours, who knows why. Even in the recruitment episode for Tien and Roshi, Chiaotzu was hardly noticeable to be honest. His character or whatever is left of him is literally just saying "Tien! You're ok"!
Fair enough, Tien had so much potential to be so much more than what we were given. I like Tien because of those attributes I mentioned, but its a personal preference.Doctor. wrote:He's boring, his introductory arc was one of the worst arc in the series for me, he hasn't developed since the 23rd Budokai, Piccolo and Vegeta do his archetype much better and his character could have stayed dead back in the Saiyan arc and it wouldn't have changed the story. There's hardly anything to like. I don't dislike him, he's just one of my least favorite characters because there aren't many characters in Dragon Ball that I don't like.
But you must find Chiaotzu even more boring then too though.

Problem is I never claimed Kuririn has a bond with Veggie, or even claimed anything like that among the characters in my post. I've literally only linked up people with actual personal relationships that actually feel strong whether positive or negative. Ten having history doesn't mean anything because he doesn't have some major connections to most of these guys. I never said Kuririn was close to Vegeta because they worked together before or anything. No, I connected people who clearly have a major connection with each other. There's no double standard I'm using. The most I even said about 17 was that he's getting along with Goku, but he's only actually somewhat close to 18 due to the fact they are siblings.Basako wrote:Your claim is ridiculous and it's wrong. It wouldn't apply to the other more stoic characters since you know, they actually have relationships that got major focus so we know how personal these relationships are. Piccolo for example is close to Goku and Gohan. Gohan is obvious. Goku started out as this dude's arch-enemy and rival and to avenge his father's death and follow where he left off, and they gradually grew to becoming really good friends (so good, they're practically family). Hell, it's telling that Goku puts more trust in Piccolo than in anybody else barring maybe Gohan. Being there doesn't mean much is the point. He's just there, his relationship with these characters aren't getting fleshed out more or any deeper.
Re: What's up with Tenshinhan this arc?
Ten and Chaoz were conceived as rivals for Roshi's pupils. Chaoz specially for Krilin, Ten, for both, Yamcha and Goku. I don't know if Toriyama planned to make them good when he first wrote them, but that's what happened, we know he improvises.omaro34 wrote:I never knew what purpose Chiaotzu served other than following Tien around. Once in the gang, Toriyama wouldn't write him off, it's like Puar or Ulon, they are still around. The exception would be Lunch. Chaoz continued fighting for a while, but maybe he should have retired earlier, he finally did when the androids came. Since then, his role is to be Ten's friend or whatever they are. Let's say bros.

Re: What's up with Tenshinhan this arc?
To address this. I did read things from an official source but never published about things on why Tien was left out early on in the Buu arc. It was because as Toriyama was writing the story. Having Tien would have been to much clutter at the time. Toriyama reduced Krillin and Yamcha to retired casual clothes wearing guys. So they get to hang out and get screen time. But Tien is a warrior who never stopped training. Tien wouldnt have sat in the stands of the tournament if Krillin,Piccolo,18 were joining. But since Akira didnt plan to actually finish the tournament in a traditional way it would have been too much.emperior wrote:That's very strange indeed. I'm quite sure that if Toriyama continued his manga in the 90s after Buu, Roshi and Tenshinan wouldn't have fought at all.precita wrote:I guess this is why Toriyama wrote Tenshinhan out for the majority of the Buu saga, he felt he had no place in the series anymore.
Which is weird because you can tell the only reason he and Roshi are major fighters in both the Freeza movie and now is because of Toriyama. Why did Toriyama suddenly get nostalgic for these two and start shafting the later characters like Buu and Trunks/Goten? It's literally the complete opposite of the direction he was going in the Buu arc of DBZ.
I think that when Toriyama read his manga again he liked Roshi and Tenshinan a lot, so he decided to give them a more active role again. The RoF cast seems to be made up of Toriyama's favorites, as it's quite strange 18, the kids, Buu, Yamcha and Chaotzu were missing.
Piccolo played the part in knowing who Shin was, Krillin the guy to constantly tell the audience how dire the situation is. Yamcha is just a clinger and never to far away. Kind of like Olong,Turtle, Bulma. Those characters just hang out on the same areas.
Tenshinhan would have definitely flown with them to babidi, at this time Videl was being developed. Hell even Gohans highschool classmates were given roles and were even in the intro picture. Lol Too many non fighting characters to give a role to. So Choutzu would have been the third Olong-Puar character. And Tien falls in the middle of, he wants to fight he will fight I have no one he can fight. I just dont have the space for that. What was Piccolos role in the Buu arc? Get turned into stone, kill babidi whos physically weak, baby sit Goten and Trunks. Get absorbed and die. What was Krillins role? Get turned into stone, fly around, scream "Vegeta!" Hang out with the crew on the look out, get turned into chocolate and die.
As a Tenshinhan fan, for me what he got is far better than just seeing him hang around being scared or waiting for the clock to run out. He was seen dodging Super Buus kill all humans attack. Then for Toriyama to design such a bad ass outfit with the cape really put a smile on my face. Wish that was his Super outfit. For him to save Dende, Satan and depending how you see it Gohans life was a greater feat than anything Piccolo or Krillin did in the arc.
People forget or dont analyze. Buutenks is the power of super buu,Piccolo and SS3 Gotenks. Gohan was fully healed and was much closer than Tien to Dende and Satan. But Gohan was helpless to save them. For Tien smack a blast from such a powerful foe away was spectacular. It showed power and usefulness. In order to derail a highspeed powerful object. The deflecting object must be in a certain ratio and speed in order to have an affect.
You Got to see Tien dodge an attack by Buutenks and still stand face to face sensing his power with him cap flaping. If you pause that image its an epic shot. It was more than a cameo. It was a meaningful but brief plot point that swung the story into a new direction. By saving Dende and Satan Tien allowed the ending to unfold how it did. Dende was pivitol in healing people on the Kais planet. Satan was the main reason why Earth gave their energy to stop Kid Buu. Without Tien showing up Kid Buu could have won. Domino affect. Even Tiens giving his energy to Goku was epic. Everyone just put their hands up. Tien was an explosion in the mountains, smoke and wind and a great line by him.

Re: What's up with Tenshinhan this arc?
After reading everything. Heres my personal view on all the majority of what people are talking about.
Tiens character development in series has been established. Of course it would be nice to see more. We can get clues from other sources like Toriyama interview. Where he says Tien and Choutzu are famers and make a fortune off of helping other farmers. So they have their own business. Launch stops by and so does Yamcha. All this in addition to his training.
As bad as episode 89 was in terms of a writing stand point. You can gather a lot about Tien. Hes constantly training striving for higher heights. He is now a Master and seems Roshi is passing the torch over to him. Hes very well respected and reveared in that area. Hes honestly the only one teaching these arts to the next generation. Sayains cant be every where. Threats will pop up and other heros must rise to the occasion. Hes making Earth stronger. Giving back to the people. Making a mark on this world. Hes hospitable, he also had no problems with joining the tournament as he said it would be a nice chance to test out his skills. I was surprised Goku didnt tell Tenshinhan the truth. Another bad writing from a character stand point.
Tien sitting down having dinner with Goku and Roshi show a nice character moment. And the fact he was stuck with the bill was funny. Gohan asking for Tien showed how Gohan views Tien aswell. Gohan did dominate Tien. But he was out to prove something and came in focused. If this was the Gohan a few episodes before that things would have been different. Tien has had frienship moments with Krillin and Yamcha throughout. And Tiens dialogue with Roshi adds layers to his humbleness to his elders and his enthusiasm to see Roshi conqur a vice and temptation for a greater cause. Thats what Tien is about the greater meaning of life itself.
I believe Toriyama has seen how foolish it is to have Tien just disappear and no one know how to find him. And that its foolish that Tien wouldnt want to see his friends. So in Super hes done a 180 on that statement made at the end of the Cell games by Tien. Tiens been apart of Bulmas party and bravely tried to fight Beerus. Him in ROF showed he was a polished, skilled force to no be taken lightly. In the movie you cant tell any difference between him,Gohan and Piccolo. While Roshi and Jacco both were hit multiple times and Krillin was over whelemed and almost blasted into defeat. He wanted to watch the U6 arc. Why wouldnt he take the chance to see the most poweful fighters from 2 universes and to learn more about the gods?
So far in the TOP its premature to ask what is his purpose. He has sensed hidden fighters. Blinded others, survived Kales barrage, eliminated possibly the strongest fighter from U3 and save Roshi. Now hes fending for himself alone. We have leaks up until 105 and no mention of him being eliminated. So 3 episodes of him out there alone and survivng. And who knows how long.
Toeis profiles for the U7 arc characters gave clues of what we might see. For Tien it mentions his Kikoho attack and multiform. I'm also sure they will find a way to re-use him growing four arms animation. When its all said and done those who wanted to see things from Tien will be satisfied. And those who wanted him to fail, be first out, do nothing will be very disappointed.
It's true Ten said they wouldn't see him again, but, apart from the time against Boo, there is also Super now. I mean, Beerus, RoF and Champa arcs. He retconed his own words. He is a loner though, he and his pokemon.GreatSaiyaJeff wrote:I always thought Vegeta has some kind of respect for Krillin, he did barely survive Nappa's rampage and they did fight together against Freeza and his forces.
Fair enough, but it felt like Nappa could have killed Krillin anytime really after the three hours but I see what you mean.
True his words have been retconned but he doesn't hang around them as often as others though. Heck even Goku says that he didn't Tien in while in episode 89.

Re: What's up with Tenshinhan this arc?
Judging by the upcoming eps/summaries it doesn't seem like Tenshinhan gets focus anytime soon.
I guess the best you can hope for is he's treated similar to Krillin where he gets to take down at least 1-2 characters on his own.

The number of fighters is dwindling with each episode. That seems less and less likely.precita wrote:Judging by the upcoming eps/summaries it doesn't seem like Tenshinhan gets focus anytime soon.
