We saw where Goku's life was and by the second episode, we were into the conflict. The Great Saiyaman stuff is far better in Kai and even then it's still too long. I just never cared much about the Great Saiyaman stuff. It wasn't funny to me.Just because there's no fights or adventures doesn't mean there isn't any story progression (although to be fair there is a high potential for that). You could make the argument that everything in the Buu arc before the Tournament isn't progressing the story, but we get to see where Gohan's life is after Cell, are introduced to Trunks and Goten and Videl, and learn how they think of each other

GT was so cheap on their Beach Episode. It was mostly a flashback and stills. I'd love an actual full on beach episode.Michsi wrote:Aren't those set in a our world technically? The manga's done splash images for Christmas (that one Toriyama drawing where everyone is Santa Claus) and there's a Toriyama mini-comic set during it.
Halloween I just like because it's Halloween.
But! If you want something more universal, how about a New Years episode? Dragon World definitely counts the passage of time in years like the team real world does.

But we buy money to get things like food which isn't something Goku worries about since he can easily fish and hunt.Olympian wrote:I`m continually fascinated by some of the Fandom`s obessesion with the cucked.

My 2.0, it`s exactly because of the nature of the characters and how powerful they are compared to the rest of the planet, how outwordly all of them are at this point that slice of life for the simple things present themselves a challenge. Goku never had to make money in his entire life so it`s a challenge for him to adhere to that sort of frame. Tenshinhan was someone who grew up respecting his senseis and trying to be the perfect student so it`s a challenge for him to adhere to the new frame in being the sensei now.
Characters need slice of life and conflit can translate in the smallest details and routines they aren`t use to, in order to fit in among Earthlings.
Tenshinhan teaching martial arts could be interesting, though I'd rather see that in the body of the series than in the context of a slice of life which almost by its nature is unremarkable.
What need do the characters have to fit in?
All of this would work better in shorts which are about the premise and not stories.

Hey I’m just going with what would logically happen in the show. Besides, it’s Yamcha, and unfortunately, it’s expected that bad things happen to him.Olympian wrote:I`m continually fascinated by some of the Fandom`s obessesion with the cucked.

It's not needed, but it could exist and even enrich the DB world even more if done right.

Re: Would you watch a "slice of life" Dragon Ball series?
No, not a whole episode. In the episode where Goku is a rampaging Golden Great Ape, Pan's photo of their family trip to the beach is what brings back Goku's rationality and causes his transformation into SS4.
I don't remember if it looked cheap but I liked that moment. It was really sweet. I don't think Toriyama would've done something like that, but it's well done.

Uchiyama was animation director that week. His art I always found kinda flat. It also wasn't for the whole episode.Dpc292 wrote:Gt had a beach episode?MR.Mark wrote:It was a lack of imagination and creativity. That's the only thing holding back a slice of life series.Chuquita wrote:

GT #34. It's a sweet scene if you can get past the Uchiyama corrections.

I may not be a fan of GT, but if the idea is good enough and adds something to the characters and story, I'm for it.

Oh, I had no idea GT actually tried it. Well, if it wasn't any good, then it shouldn't count.
Anyway, I'm not against a Xmas/Halloween episode or any holiday . Just not Valentine/White Day.

That's not being cheap. You've dropped context. It was about the emotion of sweet moment getting Goku to regain his rationality. The photo triggered a memory, so of course it's going to be a still. There are lots of reasons to criticize GT, but this isn't one of them.GT was so cheap on their Beach Episode. It was mostly a flashback and stills.

YEEEEEEEESSSSSSS YOU JUST COMPLETELY SOLD ME. THAT SOUNDS AMAZING.TheGreatness25 wrote:I wouldn't watch an entire series of it. I mean, what would be the point? No tension, no real story, just seeing how the Dragon Ball characters go through life like the rest of us. Eh, I'd pass. While it's really nice to break the tension, an entire series of it would be way too much. The whole magic in it is that it's limited. I mean what kind of stories could you tell? Trunks's overdue library book? Ox King's uncomfortable plane ride? Vegeta on a job hunt? It could be fun as a mini-series or something that's short-term, but a whole series?

Re: Would you watch a "slice of life" Dragon Ball series?
Definitely. The "slice of life" episodes of Super seem to be the current writers' strong point, a full series in that genre would allow them to give it their all. As long as TOEI plans it out right and brings on a great director it would be a solid series.

Re: Would you watch a "slice of life" Dragon Ball series?
There seems to be a gap between literary slice of life and naturalist slice of life. Ever since K-On! (but also before it), "slice of life" in anime has referred to "characters doing things with no rhyme or reason". There's no plot progression, no real character development, and often no real conflict. In naturalist terms, slice of life refers to a realistic/naturalistic representation of everyday life. In that regard, even something like the Simpsons or the average sitcom would qualify as 'slice of life'.ABED wrote:How does everyone define "slice of life"? Because unless there's conflict of some kind, it's not a story.
I've imagined the idea of a Dragon Ball-themed slice of life series before. A lot of them tend to involve the Zetto Senshi goofing off with their amazing powers, dealing with the fact they're such strange characters, and altogether showing off how different their everyday life would be compared to ours.
I called it "DBZB" because it was also wacky and would last six episodes.

Re: Would you watch a "slice of life" Dragon Ball series?
The Simpsons don't progress season to season or episode to episode, but within the episode, the characters do learn and grow. There are plots and there is conflict. I'm not quite sure what you're pointing out with this example or even "the average sitcom".In that regard, even something like the Simpsons or the average sitcom would qualify as 'slice of life'.
If the stories in this hypothetical series are literally just them goofing off then it would certainly last only a few episodes, if that.

Re: Would you watch a "slice of life" Dragon Ball series?
I wonder how much of the Tournament of Power being heavily focused on battles was Series Director Nakamura Ryouta's ideas or a major push by Bandai to sell toys? The personalities of the Dragon Ball characters are so varied you could put them in so many different situations and see how they unfold. That's the hallmark of a great set of characters, being able to put them into any situation and create something entertaining. This is why the Otaku-aimed moe-heavy works have been so popular, I believe. Producing a high-quality, cute series would be a lot of fun, especially if it focused on angles of the characters normally not followed. Where's Gokuu and Chi-Chi doing fun couple stuff together and actually enjoying each other's company? Or Gokuu entering fishing competitions, or Present Trunks trying to win over babes in high school through racing cars? Where's Goten drawing in way more babes then Trunks (who can only get the nerdy girls)? Where's Gohan teaching a class while being completely oblivious to the delinquent girls trying to skip out on class and then thinking that he's having a positive effect on their lives as a teacher? Where's Videl getting into competitions with the neighborhood moms over who has the best maternity wear? Where's Mister Satan trying to dodge claims of an illegitimate child from a hooker? Where's Pan and Bra becoming gyaru who participate in compensated dating? Or Blooma maniacally entering into science competitions over petty shit with other scientists? Where's Vegeta mourning Anthony Bourdain's death?
There's so much fun to be had.

I would. For me, it's what Super did the best, though I would certainly miss the elements of action and story since that's what the series was built upon, unless the slice of life stuff tell good stories such as Tights and Jaco.
