FUCK THIS!
I can't BELIEVE That Funi would take that much off. This makes me so incredibly pissed off that I am considering taking a shit in this dvd package and sending it right back to the lousy fucks. How could they take THAT much off?!
Un-fucking-believeable, I have enough anger to raise my power level... OVER NINE THOUSAND!

First off, fuck you.
Guys, it's going to be the same show either way.
*Spoiler Alert*: Vegeta is still going to lose this time around. It's 20-50 dollars.. find better things to do then complain about a cartoon. Thanks.
It'd be the same here too:
Wanna buy it?

Here I'd thought they had learned back in 2000 not to just randomly throw some credited endings around, since they stopped after those first two "Captain Ginyu" discs. I don't even know what to say.
I guess this means SHOU Mayumi is going to be credited as Chichi until episode 200.

Wait, wait, wait...hold the motherfucking phone! Are you serious?
Those are the wrong credits...WTF???
Sorry for the bold, but jeez, I was just kidding around. Do they actually have the episode 1 credits on
every episode?
Yikes...

I lol'd. That's just so lazy, that it's awesome. I can't wait to see this...on my 4:3 television.

With the exception of that horrible snipping of Yajirobe at the bottom in pic 20, the cropping really doesn't look nearly as bad as some of you guys made it out to be IMO (though it's still pretty noticeable). And I'll say the same for those shots of the Gohan/Vegeta battle. At least FUNi didn't go and crop their heavily saturated zoom-in digi-beta masters, they went and applied it to their unaltered film master given by Toei. Really, the cropping doesn't look too badly done to me. Looking at the cropping done in the Evangelion Death and Rebirth movie (to all the scenes in Death), that seems to be what DBZ is on par to in terms of cropping. Yeah, so we lost 16%, I wouldn't say it's awful though. We've heard GoC's opinions, now for those of us that still intend to get the set, let's do so and form our own outlook.

They probably use the same credits to save space on the disc... Not surprising to me, and I don't really care either.
But how about that JP stereo thing? More Funi BS, or is the real deal?

EDIT: but as said before, the cropping really kills it.

Would anyone be willing to upload an episode (or maybe just a reasonably long clip) of an episode in this format? Prefferably in english (since that's obviously something new, and the Japanese audio is unaltered). I've been going through these pictures, and I kinda feel like...I'm the ONLY one who's not really bothered by this whole thing. However, I don't wanna drop $50 that easily, so I'd like to have at least some sort of taste.
I don't have the box set, but if we are comparing widescreen, here is a DragonBox movies clip I made with an h.264 codec.
Link is here:
<link removed>
its a matroska file, so you'll need a good player. I recommend this (
http://www.cccp-project.net/) and tell it to install all options with Media Player Classic. its a good high quality clip. I may add another one just so people can see what dragonbox is like outside of screen shots.

MV, forgive me in saying it like that. I meant that even you would admit that the clean-ups look very good.

except clips of the movies are worthless, because they were FRAMED for widescreen, showing clips of them only muddles the argument because they have NOTHING to do with cropping a 4x3 tv show

I can happily admit when I am wrong. This is such a case.
First I want to apologize to all the Dragon Box people for hounding you (you know who you are).
The cropping didn't seem that bad at first, but now that I have had time to think about it (and see actual shots from the TV footage), I have decided that I am not buying any more Dragon Ball releases from FUNimation. It's like they put the (english, original music) audio track on there because they knew some hardcore fans probably wouldn't be interested otherwise. They fooled everyone else with the widescreen shit.
I am, however, getting every single dragon box single dvd. I just did the math, it comes to roughly the same price as the two boxes. 49 x $31.66 = 1551.34
I'm going to start a repository for the dragon box releases with custom external subtitle scripts (with a 3rd party translation, of course. That way FUNi can't stop it) for programs like zoomplayer and media player classic. If anyone is interested in this, contact me. It's going down.
I've said my piece on this. Enjoy the POS.

I'm willing to bet they didn't make that kind of sacrifice with the English credits. As much as I hate to defend this (since I am someone who cares about the original animation staff), the reality is that they probably just don't have the Japanese credits for every episode.

So what do we do now? Complain to Funimation? There has to be something we can do. I just cant believe that this is the only realy option of getting japanese vocals with subs.
They were so close. Somehow I knew it would end like this.

The guy said he wanted to see the stuff in motion... and I said I'd be getting up another clip or two which happens to be the show... chill...
the comparison is for the MOTION and for those that haven't seen anything in DragonBox...
by the way, nothing is altered on these encodes. The only quality difference is in the compression itself.
(there are 3 files up temporarily, and I have a limited upload bandwidth)

While I appreciate the offer and you taking your time to upload said clip, I'm gonna have to agree with him. Plus, it's not exactly the same type of format as this set anyhow, even past the fact that the movies were made that way in the first place.

the comparison is for the MOTION and for those that haven't seen anything in DragonBox...
But he's referring to the motion within this new ratio. These episodes were layed out for 4:3 framing, so he wants to see how they look in 16:9. The movies don't suffer from this issue.
Anyways, at the end of the day this isn't some R1 vs R2 battle or anything like that. It's all about the ratios, and how shows
should not have their ratios altered.
Screencaps aside, this thread was basically over by the 5th post...
godofchaos wrote:and just seeing the aspect ratio like that makes it look 'weird'
Once people start getting their sets in, even if the cropping itself doesn't bother you, I guarantee you'll notice something "strange" about the video in motion. This is where the release is truly crippled.
The complete DragonBall archive...Believe.

Again, 1 clip from the movies... 2 from the show that I already had encoded.
but fine... i've uploaded a clip from the intro song (about a 3rd of it, its a decent download though, 30 megs, but its the UNCOMPRESSED MPEG2 stream) in a MKV file. Its from the Cell Saga though, so its the second version of Cha La head Cha La... use that for comparisons...
EDIT: and if you plan on grabbing the files while I've got them, use a decent FTP client... something like Filezilla... google for it
