Not in the least. The Blu-ray is cropped in that the original cels were (roughly) 4:3, but the movies were animated with a matted presentation in mind. So, the Blu-ray is cropped, but not in an incorrect manner like the season sets.Son Wukong wrote:I heard the Blu-ray isn't cropped and compared to the dragonbox you even gain some on the screen ?
And no, you gain no footage over the DragonBox that I'm aware of, unless FUNimation incorrectly framed certain scenes.

I seem to recall noticing a slight gain in some scenes, but I can't confirm this, as I don't have the Dragonboxes, and the Dragonbox-screens don't seem to work anymore.MajinVejitaXV wrote:And no, you gain no footage over the DragonBox that I'm aware of, unless FUNimation incorrectly framed certain scenes.

It was cropped in the same way as the season-sets, but the movies were animated with widescreen-cropping in mind, so Toei made sure that no important footage would be lost when it was cropped. Therefore, it doesn't affect the movies at all, we're actually getting a release that's closer to the japanese releases than we did before.Son Wukong wrote:So, in what manner was the Blu-ray cropped ?MajinVejitaXV wrote:So, the Blu-ray is cropped, but not in an incorrect manner like the season sets.

In the Dragon Box / Blu-Ray comparison screens that were posted (which unfortunately don't work anymore), yes, the Blu-Ray kept the original framing (well, at least for the shots that were posted), but added an extremely tiny bit of picture to all four sides of the image.MajinVejitaXV wrote:And no, you gain no footage over the DragonBox that I'm aware of, unless FUNimation incorrectly framed certain scenes.
The D-Box images don't work anymore, though, so like Vegard Aune said, we can't show you proof.
So, that kinda means I haven't really helped at all.

Well yeah, that's the thing about the Season sets and the Blu-Ray, that it adds side footage. I guess that's how they hoped to throw off people with the widescreen thing by saying "we have side footage". What they don't tell you is that side footage is not enough to compensate for full blown widescreen, so they still have to chop off the top and bottom. Man, why couldn't they just leave the top and bottom while adding the side footage? It would have a tiny bit of black bars at top and bottom but so what? It would be fine.
Anyways, you can see the movies "the way they were meant to be seen" from FUNimation's 4:3 releases with the computer or HDTV really lol Hit the zoom button on your HDTV remote and bam, sidescreen. Again, I took my 4:3 DVDs to watch them on HDTV and purposely zoomed into the widescreen aspect ration (forgot the aspect ratio at the moment, something by 9), Put the Sharpness on 0 (takes away their "grain" pretty damn well lol) and it looked pretty much the same as the Season sets...which I thought was funny. Yeah the picture seems a bit weird because of whatever grain is left after the sharpness is gone and whatnot, but still looks...okay. So basically, I know what the later Season sets would look like lol The only thing I like about the Season sets is the dub with Japanese audio and the fact that it doesn't have jumping pictures with grain and whatnot. Oh and the fact that I could watch it across my HDTV without making black bars. It's like a funny feeling I get. When you watch a 4:3 on HDTV and you make it "Normal" so it has the black bars at the sides, I feel like it's covering up an image lol It's a weird feeling.
