Wasn't that an anime miscalculation? I remember hearing somewhere that that didn't happen in the manga, and that if it had Cell would've been finished?

Nope. Cell does say his 'core' is in his head in the manga. And Goku did vaporize Cell's head with the Warp Kamehameha a few chapters earlier.

So this was just a flub in judgement on Toriyama's part then? That's a pretty big one to make in a relatively short span of time.

LOL, that'll work too.

I've also heard the theory that he pulls an Elder Toguro from Yu Yu Hakusho - he can move his core around, but it's in his head normally. But it sounds like fanon to me, and I try not to put too much belief in fanon for obvious reasons.

It was obviously because Mr. Toriyama received death threats if he didn't make Gohan the hero. Unfortunately for everyone, he didn't realize that the thousands of threats were coming from the same address, and instead of lots of Gohan fans, there was really only one.

Well, he kinda blasted away the rest of Cell along with the core.
