Vegeta's line about making some of his "special sauce" is just golden.
That stuff is all over the place in both incarnations. Goku, Saban days, talking about job security (cuz he's ever worked a 9-5 ever). Goku, in-house FUNi days against Freeza attacking with the two underwater ki balls thinking "Torpedo number 1 away!" The dub's pretty anachronistic.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Yeah. Think about the Saban days where Bubbles tosses Goku the fruit and it crashes through the ground, and he says, "Wow. Sir Isaac Newton wouldn't live to tell about that one." Or how about in GT when Goku says, "Does this mean I have to go back to school?"

Silliness :)

I love that line :) . But I'm a dubbie so ...whatever, I like it all.

I always liked that line because I thought it really showed how sadistic Vegeta could be. I also thought Drummond delivered it really well, plus Vegeta talking about making a Special Sauce is hilarious.

I believe Kuririn says something about 'going the way of the dinosaurs' sometime on Namek, which I found amazing considering THERE ARE DINOSAURS ON BOTH EARTH AND NAMEK.

Meh, lazy scriptwriters.
Yeah, that's why I think it would be silly. But didn't Kuririn have a line somewhere about going the way of the dodo bird? Did he have two lines like this (I do recall him being especially whiny back then).
I believe it was Freeza that said "Going the way of the dodo bird." Which makes it even worse seeing as how he's an alien.
Since he knew what a dinosaur and ants were in the Japanese version and the manga, I looked at it the same thing.

Oh yeah no denying that's a good point, not to mention he can...y'know speak English.

It isn't quite the same thing. Outside of the language issue (and how everyone speaks the same one and all), ants and dinosaurs exist within that universe. Namek had dinos, so who knows how many other planets had dino and ant-like creatures.

There was a big ol' flying pterodactyl looking monster thing in some filler chasing Bulma IIRC.

I don't think that really counts then, unless there were dinos in the manga, since Freeza says that line there (too?).

Now in the manga, only animals on Namek I remember seeing were the big fish, and the frog that Ginyu became.

Hell, fish and frogs could be used to make the same point- no telling what earth-like creatures could be on other planets. But its weird for Freeza to talk about the specific extinction of an earth species. That's why I said the dub is anachronistic. Hell, the dodo died in the 17th century, and DB still has dinos, so I don't really see how a comment on the dodo's extinction makes any sort of sense in context of the story. It was dub writers trying to be clever (and failing in my opinion), plain and simple. Kinda like Freeza's "it's time to pull back the curtain and let the third and final act begin" line. Cuz Freeza's all about the earth-based theater. Oh, and how about Vegeta with "If there is a God, he must be good for letting me live long enough to see this day." It's nice to see that Vegeta's faith in the one true savior has been restored.

I think my personal favorite was, basically, anything that came out of Yamucha's mouth in season 3. "Vegeta was crying? That's whack!"

TripleRach wrote:But I'd guess that whoever it is that does have the TV rights in Canada (and similarly for the UK, for that matter) decided to make their own English dub rather than use FUNi's for whatever reason. Either that, or FUNi actually did have some TV rights in Canada and the UK until then, but lost it, and whoever replaced them decided to use new actors for whatever reason. (Though they pretty much reused FUNimation's scripts, didn't they? How bizarre.)
The myth is that YTV, the broadcaster of the DragonBall trillogy in Canada was originally airing FUNi's dub. Apparently, Canadian Hockey Moms started mailing Corus(the owners of YTV) complaining about the violence in a show airing after school, and on saturday mornings. So, as a respectful Canadian broadcaster, YTV (Remember, this is the channel that pulled Power Rangers, because agency that has no control over them or Power Rangers asked them to) asked FUNi to edit the episodes more. They apparently didn't do that. The show got later timeslots.

Afterwards, shit hit the fan, the repeats started. Apparently, FUNimation was taking their sweet time sending their broadcasting tapes from Texas, to Toronto. Leaving gaps of weeks sometimes months, where YTV broadcast of DBZ would be in constant repeats. So new episodes became far apart and few. So what does YTV do? Get a new Dub from Ocean in Vancouver ofcourse! Creating a feud between the two. Afterwards, YTV would stop airing FUNimation's dub entirely, and actually didn't broadcast anything from the company for many years(meaning no DBZ Movies after FUNi started In-House DBZ Movie dubs) until 2006 with Fullmetal Alchemist, and Case Closed. Or so the myth was told. I'm sure it holds some truth as to why there is an Ocean, and Blue Water Dub for those episodes. Afterall, this is a channel that after Dic's stopped dubbing Sailormoon for a peroid, decided to get their sister company to start producing more episodes for the channel.

I'm almost sure this line was in the manga, or one close to it. Would someone mind checking for me?

And anyway, that's more a profession of atheism. :P

Agreed. Notice that he said "if".

For a company that tries to remove as much religious material as they can, there sure are some pretty odd lines that contradict their goal...

Kuririn: "Now I lay me down to sleep..."
Dende: "Don't piss off the God of Love!"

I can't speak for the manga here. I don't have that volume actually. I can check the anime though.

Dub: Who would have thought? A lowly soldier like you, Kakarrot. I commend you. Freeza, you fool. You just don't get it, do you? Kakarrot's not an ordinary Saiyan. Kakarrot is a Super Saiyan! That's right, you heard me! If there is a god he must be good for letting me live long enough to see this day. How great! This is a dream come true, to see you beaten by a Saiyan!

Then of course Freeza smites him.

Original: Freeza, you'd better fight like you mean it. H-he's the very thing you fear the most... A Super Saiyan! That's right! The strongest warrior in the universe, a Super Saiyan! Freeza, you're finished now! Serves you right!

Oh, and damn you for making me rewatch the Bardock flashback. Had the audio on english. Bardock and his army of mutated Saiyans facing off with Freeza.

PS Rocketman. I saw you and Kunzait have an argument based on anti-dub sentiment and some accusations of japanophilia and whatnot. I just want to be clear on instances where I rip on the dub- I don't hate it because its english. I hate it because its lame. Maybe its just personal taste, but I hate all the softening. Like just now as I'm watching, Goku is burying Vegeta and comes to an understanding on him, but reflects on how he hated him so much but understands his pride. The dub has things like "You never had a chance to be anything else" and "I always respected you" and "You made some mistakes, but it wasn't all your fault." Yes, Vegeta just wanted a fucking hug. Gag me already. And before, where Goku tells Vegeta that he can't be as cold-hearted as him, he then adds that he basically doesn't know what the hell this "Super Saiyan" business is anyway. In the dub he instead explains that "everyone deserves a chance to change their ways."
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

The manga was:

Vegeta: "Super Saiyan!"

*Catches Frieza's attention*

Vegeta: "It's true. It's the legend of the greatest warrior in the universe... The SUPER SAIYAN! Fu...Freeza... You'll be in your grave soon! You'll get what you deserve!"

*Frieza shoots through Vegeta, etc.*

Vegeta: "Ka...Kakarrot... You're still too naive... Too much to be...to be a Super Saiyan!! B...Be heartless and cold-blooded! You...you could become a Super Saiyan if...if you were more realistic!"

Goku: "I can't be heartless like you, and...I didn't understand all your story about the Super Saiyans..."

Vegeta: "T...The Super Saiyans are... Guef!"

Goku: "Stop talking! You'll die!!"

Vegeta: "L...Listen well Kakarrot. Planet Vegeta, our planet, our mother planet...wasn't destroyed by an asteroid..."

Frieza: "I pierced a hole through his heart... Still he keeps talking?"

Vegeta: "I...It's Freeza who destroyed it! Us Saiyans were slaves to him. Except for us they were all exterminated. Your parents...my father, the king...all that because Freeza was afraid of a Super Saiyan..."

Frieza: "Kof! What's he talking about?"

Vegeat: "I...I beg of you! Eliminate Freeza!! Please...! He must die from the hands of a Saiyan!"

That's not the Viz one. That's one I downloaded online. I've seen some different ones and they all come out to roughly the same translation, so I'm assuming that it's an accurate translation from the Japanese. It's not Viz' because it's not censored and the names are spelled in fan-talk (Saiyajin, Vejita, etc.)

Well, it's pretty close to the anime translation. The anime had slightly more dialogue and a brief filler sequence to boot. Otherwise, pretty much the same.
