Nothing can appropriately express my anger

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

I personally don't like it that Funimation seems to be riding off of a fad, but it doesn't bother me all that much. I still think the 9000 thing is pretty funnny, when used appropriately.

Because thats the thing, people make it unfunny when they use it the wrong way.

For isntance, I usally only use it when I have to answer question that would have a numerical answer. (Like if someone asked me "How many minutes long is this video?" , I would say casually "Over 9000")
I don't go around yelling it and crushing a scouter(Well, occasionaly, but only because I know its stupid when I do it and it annoys people).

Actually, I think its funniest to use it when people don't get it.

"How many of these do I put in the oven?"
"Over 9000"
"What?"

So what!? It's stupid to get genuinely mad over this sort of thing. They're using a quote that gained momentum through a crappy internet video, so what?

No. I'm guessing it has something to do with over 9000? :?

So does anyone else feel embarassed for our entire fan community every time you see a video depicting a fan requesting "over 9000" from Chris Sabot... just the look on his face.. it's like.. he's famous for something he didn't even say...

This video perfectly expresses my feelings about the whole "Over 9000" phenomenon and its... overused-ness.
Me too, I don't hate the line, it's just so overused.

Here's what that line might make Bardock different, based on Vegeta's claims. But the skin experiment and scouter glasses was my idea:

Agreed. But knowing what I've seen from this board, they'll dismiss it anyway.
Noone here has ever said that Funi hasn't helped the industry as a whole. It's the utter incompetence they use for Dragon Ball releases that we complain about.
Y'know, they're putting out new box sets like the orange bricks for YYH. And guess what? They're fullscreen. No fake remastering process. See how easy that was? If it isn't called Dragon Ball, I'm generally very pleased with them.

He has said it. What with being the current voice actor for the character and all. Mayhap you didn't hear, but Drummond's been playing a Death God on an entirely different show these days (among other things).

He did the line on the redub and the delivery was completely different. They probably weren't even aware of the fad surrounding it at the time (compare to Burst Limit were the delivery is more Drummond-esque).

But getting pissed because he isn't Drummond is... ridiculous. That's like getting mad at a band if they lose a lead singer for still performing an older song at a concert. Vocal talent can change or become unavailable for various reasons. It really shouldn't be a source of rage if everything from before the shake up isn't locked away in a vault.

And Chris never claimed credit for the line. Look at his reaction to it whenever he talks about it. And think about it from his perspective. We, as fans, have been hearing it for years, and saw the jokes on youtube. He never saw the jokes, and sees no difference between that particular re-used line from the old script and any other. So if a fan approached him and asked him to do a line for the character he's been vicing for years, why do you think he should have thought "oh you want to hear the guy who said it ten years ago?"
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

I like how the VIZ BIG manga has it's over 8,000. Feels like a form of revenge :)

I wouldn't bother getting angry about it. Waste of pretentious internet fan energy.
The normal Viz manga of Vol.3 has "It's over 8000" in it as well. I think the whole "It's over 9000" thing started with a mistake or a script error WAY back when the Ocean Cast was doing voices for DBZ on Cartoon Network.

It's as you pointed out. Unlike Burst Limit, as well as METEOR/BT3, the redub was finished years ago. The entire project was basically finished by Fall of 04, seeing as a clip of the fight with Guldo was put on the Goku Jr. special's DVD (released that November), already fully dubbed & BGM-scored. This was also a year and a half before DBZ movie 12 was released, a clip of which also made it to "A Hero's Legacy" fully dubbed/scored, showing how early FUNi had all this stuff finished. So yeah, their "9,000" dubbing in the redub has nothing to do with the fad, but rather another early case of keeping similar or same Ocean lines.

Ocean dubbed the Saiyan saga way back in 1996 for syndicated television, not Cartoon Network.

Cartoon Network picked up the series before S3 began airing. They just re-ran S1 and 2 a couple of times before the in-house dub started.

That's what I'm talking about. Whenever CN airs the first two seasons of DragonBallZ, they are with the Ocean Cast.

No, they started airing the "Ultimate Uncut Edition" when those started getting released. I watched a few of them, but my friends watched all of them.
