Question about a dub line in the Garlic Jr. Saga

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Well, he is in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but even then he's the most ambiguous vampiric-demon of the Buffyverse.

And Mr. Popo looks nothing like the other Black characters that Toriyama draws.
Compare him to the black Boss Rabbits assistant, both are dark skinned and have huge lips, in fact look at commander Black. The "Mammy" Kurririn goes to for a magic marker. The little black girl with long braids sticking out of her head watching the show at the Tenkaichi Budokai, need I go on?

As for your little example the only difference is the artist is just making fun of the persons over exaggerated features, not their race. If he drew Rice with pitch black skin huge red lips and a text balloon with "I LOVA SOME FRIED CHICKEN MISTAH BUSH" then you'd have a better equivalent. We're talking about a stereotype of a race of people, not just making specific people look funny. Unless you know a man who looks like Mr.Popo.

Oh and I never said Toriyama was trying to be offensive, I even said I understood where he was coming from, get off your fucking high horse. When you deny something so blatant you just end up looking stupid. It's fine to admit that it is a racist character and it's also fine to know why he was made and why it is excusable.

I dunno why this is used as a pejorative. Fried chicken is delicious, who wouldn't want some?

Look. We will be forever in disagreement about this. Yes the Black characters are drawn in stereotypical ways but like I said the "white" characters aren't very realistic either. Mind you, this next part is coming from somebody who is Black. Toriyama never made realistic art so anything 'racial' about the his art is something that I don't even think about since the style is highly unrealistic and not reflective of real life. And it's not like he was automatically stereotyping the black characters into racist positions either like I've seen in American stuff where every black man is ghetto at one point and every black woman no matter what her status is loud at another point. As far as I've seen it's not like he makes every single black character that's ever in his manga or in the anime in positions that date back to slavery, making them talk stupid, or all around making fools out of them.

Pretty much this. Are the characters like Assistant Black, and those other characters you mentioned Black? Yes I'm not denying that. Are they stereotypes. Not in my view. They are Black characters drawn in Toriyama style. And no I don't and probably will never think that Mr. Popo is black other than that his skin is jet black. To me it's always kinda like saying that Genie in Aladdin is part of the Blue race of people and that sounds stupid.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

Obviously the visual comparison is blatant, but that's about it. I don't see the relevance of the fried chicken thing, cuz Mr. Popo's character isn't portrayed in any sort of stereotypical way.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Agreed, I think the love of fried chicken would be more accurately described as a Southern stereotype.

Okay you're obviously not grasping the point here so I'm just about done with you. Big round lips for black people isn't "Toriyama style" the dialouge isn't racial but the characters do portray old stereotypical looks.

Mr.Popo does look like a sambo, there was and never will be a blue race of people but there is a "black" race of people whos skin tone was often exaggerated in the media to mock them, the same with their larger lips. Refer back to my old pictures if you must.

It would be like if Toriyama made all the Asian characters have slanty eyes and big buck teeth that wouldn't be "his style" it would just be portraying the old racist look, it's not the first time Toriyama has drawn something not politically correct as far as other countries are concerned. Look at that big hulking gay guy at the end of Z "police" uniform n' all.

Again I don't blame him, but I'm not going to lie to myself and pretend like he hasn't drawn anything incorrect.
