It seems to me like Dragonball still gets shit from anime fans, though not as much as when it was more popular. I remember at the last Kumori Con, there was a DBZ video in the AMV contest, and the audience groaned and didn't really seem to pay attention while it was playing. Granted, it was a LinkinBallZ video....featuring Broli....but still! They didn't even give it a chance. "Kids these days!" *shakes fist* I was at Suncoast the other day, and a store clerk was telling me about how he had been talking to some anime fans one day and he mentioned that he liked Miyazaki movies, and they told him that Miyazaki "isn't REAL anime." Yeah, I'm sure those kids watch real, hardcore, thought-provoking anime that make bold statements about our modern society and reality, like Naruto
It's also tough to find good Dragonball stuff in con dealer's rooms, despite the fact that Japan is still pumping out tons of DB merchandise. Most booths will usually have nothing more than a couple gashapon, if they have anything at all. I can usually find maybe one booth that has a good selection, and it's normally one that has a larger variety of items featuring older series (I usually get Dragonball stuff from there, and my husband gets Lupin III and UC Gundam things). I guess it's to be expected that most vendors are going to carry items more relevant to current interests, but old school fans need love, too! They're also probably willing to spend more money than the random teenage fangirl who only has the $20 she begged her parents for (little do they know, she's going to spend it on hardcore yaoi doujinshi, featuring Raito and Eru, who are just, like, soooooo kawaii desu ne!!!!1!1one).
Make no mistake, I'm definitely not bashing newer series. I certainly watch plenty of them, including "it" series like Naruto and Death Note. But the new school fans just have me rolling my eyes most of the time while in their presence, to the point where my friends and I even created "con bingo" to amuse ourselves while at conventions, where we mark off squares filled with such con staples as Narutards and glomping. My two pieces of advice for new fans would be as follows:
1)
Calm the fuck down for a few minutes. You do not need to be screaming at all times. Luckily, this will usually happen naturally after the pocky/ramune high wears off.
2) Even if you don't want to watch the classics, at least show some respect for them. Your favorite show of the moment probably wouldn't be what it is if some older series hadn't paved the way first.
This overlong message was brought to you by the cynical old school otaku committee.
