Actually, a dub is any sort of recorded voices for film/television be it original or replaced for another language.

Sorry, had to get that out there.
Well to avoid confusion it's normally considered a 'dub' when it has been translated from it's original language. I can't think if many circumstances were people would call original material a dub.

You know, it just doesn't make a lot of sense if someone were to ask me if I was watching (for example) a Chinese film in it's original recorded audio with subtitles, and I called that film the Chinese dub because it hasn't been dubbed.

If you want to talk about 'Dragonball Evolution', then to call the version that Japan is getting the 'Japanese dub' would be right, but would you actually call the one we get an 'English dub'? Not really, as it's the original audio.

It's not even really much of a bother to me, even though what I'm saying is true, you are right as well as dubbing can mean simply laying down recorded sound. Japanese dub just makes it sound as if there was a version before the original. That's why I don't call it that.

It really makes no sense to me out of the 60-some odd shows they have, Dragon Ball Z translated/dubbed themes of CHA LA, WE GOTTA POWER, ZENKAI, and We Were Angels.

Pick a show, any show! If it's not Dragon Ball Z, FUNimation put some real effort into it! Even Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT got some love!
30 of those titles were done by ADV and Sojitz handed the rights over to Funimation. So on that they did no work.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Huh? Do you mean that you're mad they didn't dub those songs? Also, while DBZ wasn't one of them, remember there are some animes whose changed dub themes are better than their Japanese themes.

I misspoke. The words "they haven't done" should be there.

Also, I have no clue which shows you're talking about.

Here's an example with TF Galaxy Force:

Japanese intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WPD8i39boU

English intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdVNY1mTauU

Now I admit I might be a little bias being an 80s boy, but still I think the English intro was better.

I was really saying that since FUNimation has been changing their tone and style of dubbing in general since they first aquired DBZ, that it's just a bit disappointing they aren't going back and giving it the same level of quality you'd see in their later works, like One Piece or SoltyRei. They've been doing bits and pieces, such as removing horribly absurd lines from the Freeza Saga or just general inconsistencies, such as Bardock the Brilliant Scientist, but with the lackluster "not too bad, but pretty lame" style of writing the series had up until the Cell Games/Buu era, it doesn't really seem like much.

It seems to me like Dragonball still gets shit from anime fans, though not as much as when it was more popular. I remember at the last Kumori Con, there was a DBZ video in the AMV contest, and the audience groaned and didn't really seem to pay attention while it was playing. Granted, it was a LinkinBallZ video....featuring Broli....but still! They didn't even give it a chance. "Kids these days!" *shakes fist* I was at Suncoast the other day, and a store clerk was telling me about how he had been talking to some anime fans one day and he mentioned that he liked Miyazaki movies, and they told him that Miyazaki "isn't REAL anime." Yeah, I'm sure those kids watch real, hardcore, thought-provoking anime that make bold statements about our modern society and reality, like Naruto

It's also tough to find good Dragonball stuff in con dealer's rooms, despite the fact that Japan is still pumping out tons of DB merchandise. Most booths will usually have nothing more than a couple gashapon, if they have anything at all. I can usually find maybe one booth that has a good selection, and it's normally one that has a larger variety of items featuring older series (I usually get Dragonball stuff from there, and my husband gets Lupin III and UC Gundam things). I guess it's to be expected that most vendors are going to carry items more relevant to current interests, but old school fans need love, too! They're also probably willing to spend more money than the random teenage fangirl who only has the $20 she begged her parents for (little do they know, she's going to spend it on hardcore yaoi doujinshi, featuring Raito and Eru, who are just, like, soooooo kawaii desu ne!!!!1!1one).

Make no mistake, I'm definitely not bashing newer series. I certainly watch plenty of them, including "it" series like Naruto and Death Note. But the new school fans just have me rolling my eyes most of the time while in their presence, to the point where my friends and I even created "con bingo" to amuse ourselves while at conventions, where we mark off squares filled with such con staples as Narutards and glomping. My two pieces of advice for new fans would be as follows:
1) Calm the fuck down for a few minutes. You do not need to be screaming at all times. Luckily, this will usually happen naturally after the pocky/ramune high wears off.
2) Even if you don't want to watch the classics, at least show some respect for them. Your favorite show of the moment probably wouldn't be what it is if some older series hadn't paved the way first.

This overlong message was brought to you by the cynical old school otaku committee.
