Yeah, Weaver's a one off side character who's friends with Goku and that's about it. He's just there for some minor early plot elements and then he gets ignored. IIRC, they weren't even sure if he'd be included in the sequel at all when information first started to come out.If I am not mistaken wasn't "Weaver" only on set for like 3 days. That means he is probably in the movie for like 5 minutes tops. And by best friend, he might just be some kid who is friendly to Goku, and then bye bye Sequel time here comes Krillin WABAAM.
Ok, Maybe not, but I am pretty sure Weaver's role will be insignificant.
I've never, ever, seen anything even remotely resembling that mentioned. I saw them say they weren't sure if he'd even be in the sequel. And I saw the actor say he hopes he gets a slightly big role in the sequel. But that's it.A while back they said that Weaver's role would impact the sequel.
"Incredibly different from Dragon Ball"?Also, it isn't so much that the pictures alone are putting me off. It's the matter of how incredibly different this movie is from Dragon Ball. The target audience is supposed to be those who are fans of the series and barely anything in this mess resembles Dragon Ball in the slightest bit.
There's far too many story changes and character screw ups that make this thing seem exactly like movies based off of video games.
"Too many story changes and character screw ups"?
The hell?
Good natured food loving (Saiya-jin) boy goes on a hunt with super intelligent genious girl for ancient balls that can call a magic dragon. Meets a desert bandit and a martial arts master along the way and ends up saving the world from Piccolo.
Yeah, that sounds absolutely nothing like Dragon Ball.
Based on everything I've seen/heard about the characters Goku is still Goku, Roshi is still Roshi, Bulma is still Bulma, Yamcha is still Yamcha, Chi-Chi is still Chi-Chi, and Piccolo is still Piccolo. We've got 2 base changes to the characters. One is Goku being enrolled at a school (which could go any number of ways, many of which do nothing to change Goku's personality but would, in fact, underscore that he's not just a normal everyday teenager) and the other being that Piccolo was 'originally good and got imprisoned for an 'arguement''. We don't know what this argument was, we don't know who or what he was before being imprisoned, etc.
So, really, all we know about Piccolo is a dumbed version of what we already knew from the manga. Piccolo was once good (it's not like the son of Katats was always full evil, you know) and then got sealed away. The 'arguement' could be anything until we're told what it is. And hell, they've even got Mutaito involved in this, so it's not like they just hand a cop knock on Piccolo's door and through him in jail or something.
Also, you're utterly wrong about the target audience. The target audience is the general public. Always is, always will be. These movies are only ever made to appease large amounts of people interested in action/adventure flicks. All fan appeasment is done as a bonus to the fans to help with word-of-mouth promotion. And until a movie is actually watched you can't really tell what/how any of the fan appeasment attempts exist/work/whatever.
And 99% of gan appeasement is things like extensive character resemblences (such as the 'realistic' Wolverine hair in X-men) and in-jokes (such as the yellow spandex joke in X-men) and never have any bearing on plot.
I saw it and I completely disregarded it because a lot of it was either outright wrong or grasping at straws for complaints.Oi. Did you guys completely miss my post before?
1) We don't know anything about Goku's tail beyond the fact it is not present in the movie. Of course, we all know that teen Goku had a tail in the series so this is obviously a horrible change.-Goku doesn't have a tail. So Goku does not transform and Grandpa Gohan does not get killed by a rampaging giant ape.
2) No, Goku doesn't step on Gohan. But... guess what? It changes nothing about the plot of the series overall. The biggest change is that he doesn't lose Gohan until later in life. But until we see the movie we can't tell what effect this has on him. However, considering that Goku doesn't give a shit 5-minutes after realizing he stepped on Gohan as a kid, and it's never mentioned, discussed, or otherwise noted again after the Goku/Vegeta battle it's not even important to the series.
1) He's got blue-eyes, big deal.-Goku is a generic blue-eyed, black (crazy styled) hair teen in high school. His naive nature seems non-existent, so no thinking his grandfather's Dragon Ball is actually him. Goku is also apparently the same age as Bulma and Yamcha.
2) I don't know exactly how 'generic' he is, since he apparently has his strength from the start. And he is still a Saiya-jin.
3) Nothing has even remotely hinted at him not being naive. Nothing. We have, however, heard of a very 'Goku like' moment where he's torn between watching Chi-Chi's match at the tournament and getting himself some hotdogs.
4) Goku stopped thinking the 4-star ball was Gohan before he was even 13. So I don't see what bearing this has on... anything.
5) The hell? They aged him 4 years. Big whoop.
1) You expect them to try and include and explain PILAF just so you can have a live action manga? An alternate method of locating the DBs doesn't really change anything at all, because Pilaf was ejected from the Piccolo saga pretty damned quickly.-Pilaf and Shuu are non-existent, thus changing Piccolo's method of tracking the Dragon Balls as they had built the giant radar for him along with Mai. Also, without Pilaf, Piccolo's freedom from his "prison" may be the cause of something else.
2) So Piccolo gets out by some means other than a bumbling little gremlin thing. This changes the plot of the story... how? What, because Pilaf didn't release Piccolo his desire is to eat ice crem all day instead of conquer the world?
Series: Best friend is killed, so Goku sets off to avenge him.-Kuririn is no where to be found. Thus resulting in Goku having to go fight Piccolo for another reason. The cause is likely the death of Gohan.
Movie: Grandfather is killed, so Goku sets off to avenge him (and carry out his Grandfater's dying request).
Obviously, in the series, this means he goes to fight Piccolo. While in the movie, since Krillin's not the one who died, Goku instead sets off to become the next pop star.
The basic plot point is still exactly the same. This change is about as important as (*glues Desires mouth shut before he continues as he doesn't want to take the thread off topic*) switching Gwen with MJ in the first Spider-man movie and not killing her. In other words, tottaly unimportant.
Hmmm. So becuse Tien is MIA in the movie Piccolo can't take someone else hostage or even hurt Goku at all?-Tenshinhan is also missing, thus severely altering the final conflict between Goku and Piccolo as Ten was used as a hostage, thus allowing Piccolo to batter and smash up Goku's body. Chaozu is missing, as well.
We don't know how many times Goku might lose during the course of the movie. But considering the fact he's only just training under Roshi in this movie that kind of eliminates the need for the water. I mean, Roshi's training is kind of taking its place, so it'd be rather redundant to include it, no?-Yajirobe and Karin are no where to be seen, thus eliminating Goku's several defeats during the arc and requiring him to take his training a step further and consuming special water to increase his powers to defeat Piccolo.
My only wonder with the lack of Korin is if/how they'll introduce the Senzu's. But they might be discarded completely, they're quite userful but it's not impossible to re-work things in such a way as to not need them.
1) True. Instead of giving Piccolo a handful of high-ranked cronies they opted for a small army of weaker villains instead. Canon-fodder enemies. But, this is an action movie and that's standard action-movie material. Besides, it's not like Piano, Tamborine, Cymbal, or Drum were that overly important. Piano didn't do anything, Cymbal and Drum existed only to be killed, and Tamborine killed Krillin. At this point we don't know who, exactly, kills Gohan. Tamborine may be being replaced in whole by Mai. Or it might end up being the canon-fodder guys that take him out. Who knows, who cares, it's not exactly something that defines Dragon Ball either way.-None of Piccolo's spawn seem to be acknowledged. No Tambourine means no Kuririn death. No Kuririn means Goku's motive for revenge has to be changed. This also means Piccolo's fear of any martial artists learning the Mafuba technique is non-existent since he has no need to create spawns to take out any martial artist.
2) I covered this bit before, about Goku's altered reasons. And I'll repeat here what I said then. It's a non-factor. Unimportant. The core concept remains the same.
3) What? As far as I can remember nothing is said about how he was sealed by Mutaito. But my guess is the Mafuba. And Piccolo does have his canon-fodder soldiers. So you can not claim he has 'no need for spawn' or no fear of the Mafuba or anything else you tried to claim in that line. We don't know what his canon-fodder guys are doing, aside from probably hunting DBs.
But even if this isn't present it doesn't completely alter the entire storyline into something completely unrecognizable. I mean, just because he's not killing martial artists to stop them from using Mafuba doesn't mean he's decided to become a ballerina.
1) Considering that Piccolo is the first villain Goku is facing in the movie-verse I'd sincerely hope he was toned down from the series version. It only makes sense.-Piccolo's strength appears to be toned down severely as he wants the Dragon Balls for global domination. A great contradiction compared to the original form, as he clearly says he can conquer the world once he has his youth restored. This suggests Piccolo will not be old at first appearance in the movie. It also suggests that Piccolo has to rely on the Dragon Balls to do something his original character could do on his own. No wish for youth will be made by Piccolo.
2) Marsters has already confirmed that he made his make-up artist make him look older (as opposed to the young and youthful look FOX originally intended).
3) I seem to remember something about the wish being used to free Piccolo, but that was a long time ago and even if it was true then it may have been altered in the final script.
1) 2 hour movie.-If Piccolo is not the one to summon Shenlong, then Shenlong does not die. Thus destroying the hopelessness caused during the arc when Kuririn, Roshi, Chaozu and several innocent people and martial artists were likely never to come back to life due to the destruction of Shenlong. Because Kuririn, Chaozu and the martial artists don't exist in the movie, this whole thing does not exist in the movie.
2) Movie audience has not seen the DBs revive people before. They do not have that "oh, everything's fine, the good-guys can be revived later" mentality, so the hoplessness is present via the deaths, nothing further is required.
Yes, because we all know every black man constantly uses slang and is gangster and that they can't be anything at all like Mutaito because they're black.-Master Mutaito is a black man in the movie. ...Do I have to explain how vastly different the actor is from the character?
1) We do not know that Tsuru is completely out (nor do we know that Tien, Chaotzu, and Krillin are completely out) of the movie. Name drops are always possible.-Tsuru-sennin is no where to be heard from, either. Thus resulting in no Tenshinhan or Chaozu. Nor much of the backstory involving Roshi and Tsuru trying to take on Piccolo and then splitting ways before Mutaito sealed Piccolo away with the Mafuba.
2) Mutaito is in the movie. We have flashbacks to Piccolo's original appearance. We do not know what will occur in this sequence. So it is entirely possible we'll get information about Roshi and Tsuru fighting Piccolo. Especially if they want to name drop Tien to try and include him in the next movie.
........-Because of Goku's age in the movie, if a sequel were indeed to be made, the storyline involving Goku's training to fighting Piccolo Jr. would be altered. This also panders to the typical generic, almost-18 teenagers being super heroes, as opposed to about a mere kid stopping a demonic being.
Correct me if I'm wrong but... wasn't Goku an "almost-18 teenager" when he killed Piccolo? I mean, he was 15 years old, yes? And then he was 18 at the 23rd Budokai, yes? So, uh, where's the change?
1) Yeah, Piccolo was always evil, that's why he had to push Kami out of himself.-Quite possibly one of the biggest changes is Piccolo's backstory. Confirmed by James Marsters, Piccolo was once good but ended up being sent to prison after having a bad argument. Piccolo becomes angry and breaks free to take over the world. This means Piccolo is not the result of Kami trying to rid himself of his evil side to become a "God", as well as changes the fact that Piccolo was always trying to conquer the world for his pure pleasure and not for revenge. This in turn completely changes how the Dragon Balls came to be.
2) He was 'sealed' not 'sent to prison' according to Marsters. He mentioned being 'imprisoned' IIRC, but that's a far thing from being sent to Alcatraz.
3) World conquest is world conquest. I don't think the motive matters all that much, unless you're just trying to be psychopathic. Which, true, was part of Piccolo's motives. But nothing says you can't be psychopathic and be out for revenge at the same time.
4) I never really expected Kami in the movie, to tell the truth. It's just a bit too much for one movie. Which means some alterations are needed for the backgaround. Maybe movie Piccolo never split like series Piccolo.
Who knows.
Who cares.
I'm not going to the theater to watch "DRAGONBALL: THE MANGA IN LIVE ACTION", I'm going to the theater to watch "DRAGONBALL: THE LIVE ACTION MOVIE ADAPTATION".
So, you've seen it stated that Piccolo wasn't the creator of the Dragonballs? Because just because they didn't split doesn't mean he couldn't have still created the DBs. I mean, he apparently created the BSDBs according to GT, no?This in turn completely changes how the Dragon Balls came to be.
