I think we got what we should have got, but got it rather late. Most movies and series are extensively advertised on television, YouTube and by other means, which starts getting annoying. I mean what's with the 20 (!) ads for the Ant-Man movie, the 10+ plus for Avengers and other movies?

Toei Animation has made a first step in making Dragon Ball Super a successful new franschise. 300 pages of speculation here, many YouTube videos etc. People are talking about this new series a lot. And they will continue talking after the official premiere. The surprise element is something many series and movies have lost during promotion.
Possibly one of the biggest

I guess it's just not a big deal for Toei? (Because it's not One Piece?) OR they have so many things on their plate they didn't plan this out well enough to have sufficient material done in time?

Super is a huge deal for TOEI, and they know exactly what they're doing here, they've even mentioned the story of Super being a mystery. They're deliberately holding back information to build up hype, and it's working. This kind of marketing can be dangerous if the material doesn't live up to all the hype around it, and I'm sure they know that, so they must have a lot of confidence in Super.

Just for once I would love to meet whoever is in charge of the marketing of the series. Sit them in an empty room and tell them "What. The. Fuck"
Check out Journey's End, a short story of Goku and Vegeta's final days. "Time is running out for the last two Saiyans"

Maybe they feel that following FnF and the announcement of a new Dragon Ball series(generating hype by itself), it's enough advertising. Just throwing in reminders for us to tune in July the fifth. I rather they allocate all resources for the making of the series than wasting it with publicity.

The reveal of the series crashed their website, and the news trended worldwide on social media. They don't even need a marketing team for this.

I really hope you're right. I want to hope they know what they're doing.

It'd probably just be you and the empty room. It wouldn't be the most shocking thing in the world if they didn't actually have anyone specifically assigned to marketing Super.

They probably just pass across scraps to their Web and PR teams now and again for press releases or news items.

Toei did the same thing with Sailor Moon Crystal (hold off information), and that ended up being... not that good (beginning, anyways).

Not revealing anything only creates hype for the hardcore fans that consistently follow any news about it. But it also creates lack of awareness for the casual fans who might not even know it's a thing. If they've got good material to work with, they should be hyping this up by now with longer ads. Oh, and we need a simulcast. -.-
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

The announcement that they were creating a new series created hype with everyone, not just hardcore fans, unless you think there are enough hardcore fans to crash their site and cause Dragon Ball to trend worldwide on social media. A lot of people I know who used to watch Dragon Ball but haven't seen it in years, and don't even watch anime, are excited about it.

Time magazine and Rolling Stone published news articles about Super when it was first announced, that's how surreally big DB still is in the U.S., apparently. I'm so used to it just being Kanzenshuu, and TFS, and a small chunk of DA and Tumblr that the idea that it's still well known isn't fully clicking yet.

All of my friends who like Dragonball already knew about it before I talked to them, and they're all casual fans.

Yes, this is my main concern. This turning on the first season of Sailor Moon Crystal.

The 15 second clip did showed some decent animation but I really, really hope they are just keeping their cards close to create hype instead of revealing more.

OG, if we get an equivalent of the "Well, I have nothing else to do today!" Usagi face. >_<

Granted, we have that "Mario is Missing" Luigi Gokû face from the Cell arc animation, but that's not as well known.

Crystal's second season has been better, and unless they announce a season three suddenly, they're done in mid-July.

I really can't believe that we're 10 days away from a new Dragon Ball series and the only concrete information we know about the series is that it's set after the Majin Boo arc. It's all really kind of surreal, and it a way, it feels more as if the Toei and Toriyama are marketing Dragon Ball Super more like it's a manga than an anime, in where they don't want to give too many details and don't want to spoil the viewers for what's gonna happen in the anime. Personally, I love that kind of marketing because it provides more intrigue and give the fans more room to debate and speculate about. But at the same time, I can certainly understand the grief that fans are feeling with the lack of information.

Either way, I'm hyped about Dragon Ball Super and July 5th can't come any sooner.

Try wearing a Dragon Ball tshirt out in public and you'll see how big it is. I have one of those orange tshirts with the Kamesennin symbol on it and people always comment on it, everyone knows who Goku is.

Marketing isn't really indicative of the quality of a series, so I wouldn't worry about Sailor Moon diamond or w/e

I'm not sure if Toei knows that Dragon Ball getting a new TV series after 18 years, was the news of the century. Nothing even comes close to this. Besides the overseas Media, even official pages like Stan Lee talked about this.

A lot of casual fans they are not even into anime/manga, learnt about this.

Toriyama saying something like this "You know, it suddenly occurs to me that somewhere along the line the Dragon Ball anime has become quite a big deal." makes me think he didn't realize that.

Now, I wonder when they decided to make Super. Right now, BOG just seems obvious to be the real test to see how Dragon Ball would do in this era. First DB Kai and OVA 2008 were smalls tests, and then BOG the real one. After being sucessful, they must have started talking about Super and decided to make Buu Kai to lead up to it.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

The announcement of Dragon Ball Super was certainly big news but think calling it the "news of the century" is a bit of an overstatement. But, as Chuquita pointed out, Time magazine and Rolling Stone published articles about the news of Dragon Ball getting a new series and they rarely, if ever, cover stories based on anime and/or manga. So Dragon Ball is quite big, all things considered. But it's not "news of the century" big. That's more for franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, MCU or DC.

I wonder about that. Because Super news were everywhere where I went.
When it comes to anime/manga there isn't any other series that can shake the world like this. But I don't care about the franchises you said, that's another truth.
