Ha, ha... you know, I was messing with that screen shot before I put this comparison together. I also added pupils but then added some "flair" to make it look like some kind of crazy Japanese commercial for toothpaste or something...

But seriously, something I did notice:

Image

If they just edited out the blood and coloured in his pupils here, why didn't they do that in the earlier shots of this?
You mean "earlier shots" as in this?
Image

Cause if this is what you're referring to, my guess would be that this is a bit brutal, whether blood is edited or not. I mean, imagine if you were seven years old and your mom walked in the living room to see a small boy, who's younger than you, with a snapped neck because he was beat down by adults? Wouldn't look to good on Nicktoons' part. So they took that out altogether.

And if that wasn't what you're referring to, I just typed all that for nothing. <.<;;
Oh gosh, I'm really sorry but I was referring to this shot:

Image

It got replaced edited but not editing like the shot I pointed out. Which got me wondering why they just didn't paint the pupils in in that shot too like the later one.

I understand why it got edited. I was horribly brutal to me when I first saw it. Just in shock. But I'm sorry you typed all of that

Yea, I know what you mean. There are some shots they edit, then later let the same thing go or visa-versa. Sometimes I don't understand the edits, sometimes they don't flash edit hard hits, sometimes they do. When I think I have their editing logic figured out, they do something completely different. For example, I'm doing episode 32 now and these two hits aren't flash edited. Why not? Perhaps it was just a mistake? Maybe not so much for that knee to Ginyu's chest, but that hit to the face? That would usually get a flash edit. It's all very confusing.

Yea, pretty much. In the recap for this episode in the next episode, it's not edit though. So, goes back to what I was saying to dragondyle.

Censorship in all media is generally inconsistent. They can censor even the smallest instances of nudity, but then leave blood and violence in.

They might as well have cut the entire scene of naked Vegeta getting out of the rejuvenation tank (if they haven't already), then randomly cut to a scene of Dr. Gero ripping off the head of that driver, just for the lulz.

Supposedly, they didn't flash edit the shots to Ginyu because kids couldn't imitate them since they're in the air. Then again, they'd have no reason to flash out the other aerial shots that they... DO flash edit. Nicktoons makes no sense. They're just like Cloverway with Sailor Moon. You think they're doing something right, then they flip flop and edit.

Also, is it possible Nicktoons censors out jerk now because of complaints? I noticed, in Yamcha's death, Krillin calls him a big jerk.

The Star Player Appears! Ginyu vs. Goku!

Before the episode starts there are some editing errors in the recap. The scene where Goku elbows Burta is shown totally intact. I love how the TV Y7-FV rating is right there on screen with it!

Image

And then the episode starts...

Image

Note: The editing of Vegeta's bloody face carries over to this episode, Gohan and Krillin no longer have blood on them to edit, and the editing of Reacoom's ass is also carried over.

Within seconds Goku gives us our first edit...

Image

Jheese looks down on his fallen friends and says...

Image

With that, Jheese flies off. Vegeta then finishes the job Goku didn't finish. The shot of Vegeta flying up and landing on Burta's neck is cut out. In the TV version he just blasts Reacoom. In the TV version though, you can still hear Vegeta start to take off, pretty sloppy.

Image

Goku tells Vegeta he didn't have to worry about them anymore, Vegeta replies...

Image

Vegeta goes on to say...

Image

Vegeta tells the group that Freeza probably made his wish by now, Krillin explains the sky hasn't turned black so Shenron hasn't appeared. Vegeta yells...

Image

Meanwhile, Jheese tells Ginyu about what just happened to the rest of the team, Ginyu starts off his response with...

Image

After hearing the whole story, Ginyu thinks to himself...

Image

Elsewhere Goku tries to come up with a plan and asks Vegeta how he should go about getting the DragonBalls from these guys. Vegeta asks Goku if he's feeling squeamish about facing off with Freeza, Goku replies...

Image

Just a little side note here: I always try to write the word bubbles as it's actually being said. I noticed in the uncut version Goku says "got to" while in the TV version he says "gotta". Nothing major, just pointing out why it's different on each bubble.

As the gang senses Ginyu and Jheese heading their way, Vegeta asks where Freeza ran off too if he has all the DragonBalls? They sense Freeza near the Grand Elders place. Gohan, worried about the Grand Elder says...

Image

Jheese points out Goku, Ginyu realizing his power level is being hidden says to Jheese...

Image

Goku and company come up with a plan. Goku and Vegeta will fight Ginyu and Jheese while Krillin and Gohan find the DragonBalls. Vegeta has his own plans of finding the DragonBalls and flies off leaving Goku to fight Ginyu by himself.

Ginyu starts off the fight with an elbow to Goku's face. This is edited with a flash...

Image

The fight goes on, eventually Ginyu kicks Goku and it's edited with a flash, but it really didn't have to be. There was originally a white flash on the uncut version, there was no contact made. I don't know why they chose to add one of those flashes to the already white flash. The shot below is of Goku right after the white flash, the Nicktoons flash edit replaces this shot of Goku flying back.

Image

Another little side note, there are some shots in this fight that aren't edited. I know I don't usually post the shots that aren't edited but in this case, it seems like an oddity and worth mentioning.

Image

Image

At this point in the fight, Goku has a little blood on his face, it only seems to be in this one scene though...

Image

Also in the same shot, Goku says to himself...

Image

Ginyu strikes a pose...

Image

As Goku and Ginyu fly upward, Jheese throws an energy blast at Goku giving Ginyu an opening. Jheese yells to Ginyu...

Image

Goku starts to power up, showing off his power and the episode ends there.

In the next episode preview there is a small edit. The scenes of Freeza ripping of Nail's arm are replaced with Nail breathing heavily...

Image

And that's it for episode 32!

Bonus: For no real reason, here is a video showing how I do those dialogue edit images, You might be surprised how primitive and lack-luster it really is. It's actually done in MS.Paint  and yes, this video is sped up...

Hey, that's how I do it (for sprite comics)! Its a good job and not too primitive.

Funimation is probably stepping up the dialogue edits to also fit CW/Toonzai's standards so they won't have to record lines again.

That seems lazy, though. Butchering the Nicktoons version just so they don't have to edit twice? Why not pre-censor death while you're at it?

Right now I'm starting to wonder if they dubbed the edited first then went back and changed the dialogue for the dvds or something? Would make more sense of idiot being replaced. Especially since a few hours later or prior on that channel you hear, "YOU EEDIOT!" lots of times.

Hmm, maybe? I mean I know MetroidJunkie said it seems lazy but, if you're a company with a bunch of other properties to dub, sub and distribute, perhaps making one less thing for you to do later is understandable....? Think what you want though, I'm just saying I can understand their decision if that's the case.

Man, you're right! It's actually on the same channel! Nicktoons plays Ren & Stimpy.

I don't know, it seems pointless to give Nicktoons the Toonzai version when the Uncut version (Saying idiot) could easily be used instead. Guess it's as he said and Funimation makes the Nicktoons script first...

I read an interview with Sean Schemmel that said they record the uncut and TV lines together ( the Y7 lines, he called it.) They were on the same script, uncut lines in black and Y7 lines in green.

Then, if it's something as basic as stupid or idiot, why not give it to Nicktoons? It's not like they have to make every single line different.

Because it's airing with a Y7 rating on Nicktoons, a kids channel.

That doesn't mean Nicktoons wouldn't get away with showing it. They can't just assume Nicktoons has the same standard as Toonzai. It makes them look incompetent. It's like there's now no reason to watch the Nicktoons version over the Toonzai version.

Full Power Goku! Captain Ginyu's Desperate Attack!

Image

The first edit comes as Goku is powering up (hey, just like the title said he would). Jheese says...

Image

After showing off his power, Goku says to Ginyu...

Image

Isn't that an odd thing for Goku to say?

Meanwhile, Nail has returned to the Grand Elder even though he was told to help Krillin and Gohan....

Image

Freeza makes it to the Grand Elder's place, Dende flies off to find Krillin and Gohan. Nail tells Freeza all about the Grand Elder and so Freeza takes it upon himself to meet him. Freeza calls to him...

Image

Freeza goes on to try and persuade the Grand Elder to tell him the password...

Image

When it becomes clear that Nail and Freeza will be fighting, Nail tells Freeza they should try and find a different spot to settle this because...

Image

As the fight starts, Freeza grabs Nail's arm and rips it off...

Image

The TV version shows the close up shot of Nail's reaction, right before Freeza elbows him in the stomach, but in the TV version the hit sound effect is taken out and so is the next shot of Freeza with his elbow in Nail's stomach...

Image

And then a shot of Nail falling to the ground and Freeza throwing his arm at him is cut...

Image

I know this is all very confusing to follow so, I did something I haven't done since the Saiyan arc. A shot by shot breakdown!

So here is how it played out in the uncut version...

Image

And here is how it plays on in the TV version. Some where between shots 2 and 3 of the TV version there was a sound effect taken out which was Freeza hitting Nail in the stomach. Also, between shots 11 and 12 of the uncut version, Nail falls to the ground. Like I said before that, and the follow scene is cut as seen (or not seen) between shots 4 and 5 of the TV version.

Image

Alright, moving on...

As Nail regenerates his arm, there is some blood on it, despite it being purple, which is what color they later change Ginyu's blood too, it's edited...

Image

Meanwhile, Bulma is trying to find Krillin and Gohan who she thinks have all seven DragonBalls. She somehow ends up encountering some monsters along the way...

Image

She eventually lands and meets up with Krillin and Gohan who, turns out just saved her from all the monsters. Bulma, being Bulma starts yelling at them...

Image

Krillin and Gohan bring Bulma up to speed and tells her to stay in one spot this time, as they fly off she yells...

Image

Elsewhere Goku is a little confused by Ginyu's new attack. He punches himself, which is edited in the TV version, even removing the bits of armor flying off.

Image

There was a very small shot of Ginyu removing his hand from the wound that was cut out...

Image

Then we see a close up of Ginyu's self inflicted wound. For some reason they changed all the blue blood to... purple, which is what they just edited out a few scenes earlier. How very odd.

Image

Image

Ginyu starts his body switch technique, and the episode ends abruptly without any word the the narrator.

Guess it's only okay when it's the same color as their skin? Orange blood on humanoids, purple blood on Ginyu, green blood on Namekians. That's the only thing that makes any sense.
