Is Vegetto's appearance too similar to Gogeta and they do it to give an easier time with telling between the two, or is this simply how people want to draw Gogeta?
He is never shown in his base form be it in the movie, GT or video games. Only Veku has been shown in base and some consider them different characters for whatever reason.
It has nothing to do with him looking similar Vegetto, it's just the way people know him best.
You would think Heroes would give him a base form but nope! Give that guy a Golden Oozaru form instead!
We may never see Gogeta "officially" in his base form...
"I am neither Goku nor Vegeta! I am the one who will defeat you!!" - Gogeta
I will absolutely never understand why fans or the official franchise people consider "Veku" a thing. It was a comment made by South Kaio, and the the lord of pudge even calls himself Gogeta as far as I remember from the subs...

I'll never understand it either, but hey what can you do.
Some even say that his SSJ form is his base form.

They're completely wrong, thankfully I never see people claiming that. Gogeta indeed has a base, Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3 and Super Saiyan 4 forms (and Golden Great Ape, if you want ). We just need to wait for him to appear... If ever he will appear.

Anything else is completely different.
I never got how people could think that. It's like saying Goku only has one form and the others are all different characters (which, I suppose, is true according to some games). I guess it's different because we actually see them in the show, but we see SSJ4 Gogeta in GT. I don't know, it just doesn't make any sense to me.

I think it's just to separate the two versions. It'd be weird to use "Fat Gogeta" when there already is a given name.
Also I don't think he calls himself by a name in any of the dubs or the original japanese.
Why? They address the fat and thin versions of Gotenks by the same name, and Piccolo called one of them Trunkten or whatever. It just doesn't make sense at all.
I'm almost certain he refers to himself as Gogeta in the Funimation subtitles after he's punched in the face, I just don't remember if the movie had dubtitles or not.

Oh yeah, he does call himself Gogeta-sama in the Japanese version. I never really paid attention to that. The FUNi dub was the one where he doesn't call himself anything.
But about everyone calling him "Veku", I'm pretty much repeating what I said before, but I think it's just a conventional and useful way to separate him from the others. I'm sure that people know the name "Veku" better than "Fat Gogeta". It's canon, and not a fanmade name, so I guess it supports that too.
(With Piccolo calling Gotenks "Trunkten" at first, I'm 99% sure it was only because he didn't know his 'official' name before Popo corrected him.)
