I definitely have more to say, it's just... hnn. Tired. Played eight hours straight today. Zzz...

Eight hours? Whoa that's impressive.
I played for twelve hours straight when I first got the game, made it all the way to Buu saga before my parents told me I needed to give up the TV... now that I've beaten everything and pretty much S ranked or higher on all missions, I don't do much if I don't have friends online.

I don't really know how it works entirely, but it might have something to do with how far you are on your own story progression... I had a friend join me for the Bardock mission before he unlocked it, he didn't unlock Bardock despite him and I scoring a Z rank thanks to him wanting to see an ultimate from me. (I think I did Cell's Solar Kamehameha)

It's because you haven't unlocked that level yourself. You gotta beat all previous stages first.

While trying to find a way to hack the game to have all the cards too on the demo on PS3 I came across an Xbox 360 Save which allows to play as Vegeta, Nappa, Raditz and Saibaiman and have all maxed out.

Image

I don't know if this still works but considering I still see "999,999,999,999,999" on the PS3 demo it's likely. Wish this was available for PS3 too so I could get my Vegeta with the best cards to beat the others online.

Edit: This might be considered illegal so I'll just leave the picture here.
Edit 2: There appears to be a PS3 demo save like this too so I'm gonna check it out.

I'll give it that this is ARTDINK's first Dragon Ball Z game but the simple fact of the game being so easy to obtain all cards even on the demo shows that without much effort you can just be as good as a pro gamer who's spent more time on it.

Kinda wish I could play as Super Saiyan God Goku on the demo but I'm really tempted to get the full game because it's so addictive.

I take all negative comments back I've said about Battle of Z before because this is just too much fun to not play it.

Last night I was on a 1v1 battle where it was more of a hide & seek (beam blasts) than actually fight I loved it and it was hilarious.

So yeah I'm gonna look up a reasonable price and grab a copy but I hope the gamers on the full version aren't as damned laggy as they are on the demo.

This game is honestly an anomaly. Even though I was defending it from the beginning, I started to agree with everyone else once I played the demo... but I took a risk in buying it (that PS+ discount on Vita sealed it for me), and honestly, I'm loving it the more I play it. There's really a sense of individuality between characters, the likes of which I can safely say have never been in a Dragon Ball game. Everyone has unique combos, damage, speed, health... and what's great about the special moves is that there's a lot of variety and strategy in them. Playing as say, Vegeta and then playing as Kuririn is like night and day. Their roles are so drastically different in battle.

I would certainly recommend to you to pick it up (maybe not at full price... then again I don't ever pay full price for games. $60 is too much for any one video game, in my opinion). One of the things the demo doesn't show is the absolutely crazy fun coop is, and how people really do have their own unique character (color, cards). And speaking of cards, they really do make a noticeable difference. Most other DBZ games, you barely notice a difference or sometimes not at all in customization. But in some of the later missions, if you want to have even a prayer of beating them, you really have to strategically beef up your character... and make sure all the appropriate roles are filled in your team.

The lack of VS mode is honestly something I've forgotten. After getting familiar with the game, I don't think in-game transformations would even work, and this isn't simply just a beat-'em-up brawler--a fighting game this is not.

Thanos,I totally agree with you on this one. This game is extremely fun to play and the characters really are uniquely different. The roles are more clearly defined than you even realize and the game is surprisingly difficult. The napa mission in the demo really throws you off because it seems like the game will be easy, but there are some difficult missions out there. There is a lot more strategy than people realize and it's crazy to hear people talk about healers and tankers on a game like this. (God I wish there was a great DBZ mmo out there, my dream game!)

My only gripe about the game is that there is no cpu vs. mode. I can understand them not wanting to really do the split screen thing on this game for an offline multi player mode, however I am disappointed that I can't create my own battles and this is the perfect game to do so.

With that being said, I love selecting my team during the solo missions and to really fit the strength of my opponent. For example, in the later saga missions, I'm a lot less likely to use a Yamaha or Tien, but I love having them in battle in the earlier missions like mission 40 where you fight waves if saibamen. It's just a fun game and I pray the online community stays around. I initially did not think this game had replay value, but it totally does. And I haven't even played battle mode yet since I've bought the game (waiting to unlock more characters before I step into that) but that mode is one I can imagine being played for a long time. I've said it before, this is basically an advanced version of The old PS1 Japanese game DB legends. For those of you who played it, the similarities are striking.

For the detractors, would I like more than one attack button? Mor combos? Counter attacks? Of course I would, but this game has achieved what any game made sets out to do, and that is to create a good time for the user; this game has far exceeded my expectations in that regard.

It's certainly nice to read that you guys are enjoying the game. I actually like the game a lot too, for more or less the same reasons and there's just a special charm to the game that manages to make me excited to play it, as subjective as that may be. It also kind of made me realize how arbitrary the requirements a console DBZ game must meet, can be for some people (lots of alternates, characters, moves must be very accurate to the show, etc), if you know what I mean.
I've also had a strange relationship with the game. Felt pretty neutral about the initial reveal, with some excitement for the potential. Lost a lot of interest after that. Regained a lot of interest after playing the demo, got dissapointed by the game in the first hours of playing, now I'm totally digging it.
Not sure if it's going to happen, but I'm definitely all for Battle of Z becoming its own series, like Budokai and Sparking.

It's hard to put into words why the game successfully feels so much like the source material. There's something utterly magical about you and a team of Z warriors all taking on a group of saibamen/cell juniors together. Heck even fighting the Ginyu force feels straight from the show/manga, even though an all out free for all never quite happened in the actual story.

I'm currently working to unlock all the characters and get as many powerful cards as I can before diving into battle mode. I can see some of the Buu Saga characters being incredibly infuriating to face. The un-staggerable melee moves that SSJ3 Goku and Majin Vegeta have are sure to be an unholy terror online.

Absolutely. A sequel to this game could be pretty amazing. More characters, stages, and the ability to make your own battles as well as some appropriate tweaks to the mechanics would be so good.

Also, it's gratifying to know that all the defending I did of this game since it was announced hasn't created a permanent archive of my foolishness online. :P

There's a lot of subtle fan service and nods to the series that are fun to discover and evoke that sense of nostalgia and feel of the source material. Minor stuff like a bunch of character animations for certain actions being references to certain scenes such as Super Buu's neutral and weakened poses being similar to when he's bored and watching the hourglass, or Kid Buu's weakened state being him sleeping like when he got tired of waiting for Goku and Vegeta to choose who would fight him first.

A lot of these alternative color schemes have had some thought put into them as well, and it's fun to notice certain familiar looks. Many characters have their Toriyama/manga schemes, more accurate anime schemes, and some even have nods to their limited color palettes from those colored chapters.

Another nice touch are the hidden scenes throughout story mode that you are rewarded for when trying to be more accurate to the original story or using certain characters in a mission. A fun example would be the mission where you face the Z-Warriors in the Cell Games stage. If you defeat Android 16 before Gohan, 16'll give his dying speech and Gohan will transform to SSJ2. If that's not enough, when you pick Perfect Cell to be on your team, the scenes are more extended, and he even goes and stomps on 16's head just like in the story after you defeat him. A less obvious one would be putting Goten and Kid Trunks in your team when you face Dabura. At the beginning of that battle, they get all excited about Dabura being a demon king, similar to when they got all hyped up about Babidi and raced off to take him on.

The first time a friend of mine went online with me and saw the story scenes for being accurate to the source (ie: team composition and defeating enemies in specific order)... it was almost like being children again, I like nods like that

once you get the hang of the game its really fun just find a character your most comfortable with. For me it was sage goku with ssj bardock, evil buu and fat buu as backups. You gotta make sure to give your main the best cards
