FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Yeah, judging by the half-filled square I think we're looking at eighteen sets.
Ten bucks says we'll either have another Ultimate Uncut Edition situation...or the MSRP on these drop ten or fifteen bucks in the next few months.

I was hoping they would just stick with black and white, the orange is really off-putting. I wish they would get rid of the extraneous text too, what were they thinking...
This is the episode of when Gokuh enrages himself after Freezer talk shit about Kuririn

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
"Doragon Boru Zetto" ... that's so... unnecessary. Sometimes I wish Funi would take to their blog/forum/anything and go, "Here. Here's 3-5 covers we want to use for this new DVD/BR. Vote and comment bitches," because this and the 5-movie pack (and other stuff too) are just kinda blah covers.
Since it's clear there's going to be 18 volumes, I think it's also clear there's gonna be a re-packaged "season" re-release eventually.

Pretty cool design for the cover, however I don't like that they're calling each season/ part "levels" like in Evangelion.

In an easter egg in last weeks podcast you can hear me almost froth with rage at this.nathantheguitarist wrote:"Doragon Boru Zetto" ... that's so... unnecessary.
Also, I don't think it's a 'line them all up' imagine. I think it's just a dramatic edit of the front cover for each volume. I can easily imagine quite a few of those lined up looking nice with thins lits of random characters.
Now for the odd thing I actually came to post about....
November catalog has no trailer for Level 1.1.
Also...
You say this as if there was ever doubt. It's done with EVERY show they do that goes beyond one release.nathantheguitarist wrote:Since it's clear there's going to be 18 volumes, I think it's also clear there's gonna be a re-packaged "season" re-release eventually.

"Digitally Restored".
Very careful wording there, huh? Ever so subtly stepping away from their previous boxsets, as though they consider them an old shame....
.... even as they air them on Hulu.
Silly FUNimation.
... on second glance, has FUNi ever put the Toei logo right on the Blu-Ray coverart before?

1- Funimation has used that wording before for DBZ. Grand discovery you made.KiddoCabbusses wrote:"Digitally Restored".

2- Yes, they've put the Toei logo on stuff.

I say it just so there's somewhere to look to when people are flipping their shit over another re-release. Even if it's forgotten, at least I'll know. lolMarcFBR wrote:You say this as if there was ever doubt. It's done with EVERY show they do that goes beyond one release.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
The sad thing is, there really is no way to market a second remastering process without admitting the original run was inferior, either by design (Which is was) or by virtue of the fact that their doing a second cut in any case.
Box art says "Season Sets Level 2", which is honestly the right sort of packaging for Blu-Ray if they want to make it recognizable.

It's not that hard. They're going from Blu-ray to DVD, which is enough to say "IMPROVED!!!," and the average DBZ fan isn't going to give a crap one way or another.BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:The sad thing is, there really is no way to market a second remastering process without admitting the original run was inferior, either by design (Which is was) or by virtue of the fact that their doing a second cut in any case.

Not true at all.BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:The sad thing is, there really is no way to market a second remastering process without admitting the original run was inferior, either by design (Which is was) or by virtue of the fact that their doing a second cut in any case.
Plenty of fantastic films have been remastered more than once.
Dirty Harry was remastered for DVD in the early 2000s, and was then remastered yet again for BD.
Wizard of Oz has been remastered plenty of times.
The Gundam movie trilogy has been remastered at least twice.
I can keep naming films, but the point is, your argument has no merit.
Plenty of things were remastered for DVD and HDTV use, and were remastered again, from scratch, for BD and modern digital distribution.
Standards have changed, as has the quality that can be given to the consumer. When many older remasters were done it was done with the knowledge that best case scenario was DVD or highly compressed HDTV.

I don't know if I'm gonna get these. I'll have to be REALLY Blown away by the actual footage once we get real, full 1080 HD clips (Like, good trailers in full HD or something)
But I love my Dragon Boxes.
VLC media player on my computer has a real-time image filter.
I go in, turn the brightness down 10%, and mess with the hue slider just a taaaaaaad... and I get this and this. And it looks this way, in motion, in real time.
And that's how I watch Dragon Ball Z, and it looks perfect for me.
This Blu-ray would have to impress me a LOT to make me want to buy this series AGAIN...

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
The orange spine clashes like crazy with the rest of the cover. It doesn't look right. And I'm also going to toss my hat in with the "screw Doragon Boru Zetto" camp.
The footage will probably look decent though so maybe after a loooong time, if nothing better shows up, I may eventually pick them up. But it's not on my radar at the moment.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Why don't FUNimation try a new design for Dragon Ball DVDs? A lot of their Dragon Ball DVDs have nearly the same template. The only really good covers were the double features.
They could have tried something new for this release. And the orange... it looks terrible.

Were any of those remasters as botched as FUNimation's first attempt with DBZ?MarcFBR wrote: Dirty Harry was remastered for DVD in the early 2000s, and was then remastered yet again for BD.

Probably not, but that doesn't mean there was no room for improvement as technology advanced.Kuwabara wrote:Were any of those remasters as botched as FUNimation's first attempt with DBZ?MarcFBR wrote: Dirty Harry was remastered for DVD in the early 2000s, and was then remastered yet again for BD.

Most of them were decent/good/great remasters.
My comment was more based on the comment that simply by doing a second remastering is an 'admission' there was a problem with the original remaster.
I mean Star Wars alone... you can complain about changes made, but each and every remaster done has just been amazing (and Blu-ray next month won't be the last... they are already working on the next remaster/tweaking for theatrical rereleases.)
