Kai had great ratings. It was regularly in the top 5 and always in the top 10 for the whole of Japan for Anime. Kai thrashed other widely known Anime, such as Naruto and Bleach.

Why the Buu saga has not been adapted into Kai yet is speculation.

Correct. The reason for Kai's cancellation is most likely due to the poor sales it did with the merchandise & home video releases.

"Entertaining" does not equal "good storytelling", and he was arguably at his worst in the Boo arc. Why do you think there are so much more debates/arguments over Boo arc-specific stuff like whether or not Super Boo was stronger than Pure Boo, or if Gohan was SS or SS2 against Dabra?

Even if it's been seventeen years since the deadline-riddled series ended, it'd do more harm than good for him to somehow continue the over-long saga, or even just expand on the DB universe. It's clear that he had a fun, but I doubt he loves it as much as we do, and he's likely forgotten half of it (like, specific thought processes that went into characters, story arcs, transformations - things that you could never get back).

In terms of manga, he seems to have passed over the mantle to Naho Ooishi, who's actually pretty good.

Well, the Boo saga is about crazy things happening... With lots of fighting and humor. The start of DB is an adventure that progresses. What is better or worse I don't think you can decide, just prefer personally. Personally, I don't really need a "good storytelling": I'd love more of the craziness that was going on in the Boo saga.

I know, but there's got to be a limit. It's not purely a gag manga anymore, and I'd like to enjoy a story with fighting and humour without having to scratch my head every five minutes (OK, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but you know what I mean).

It's almost as if Toriyama suddenly decided that he was going to make the Boo arc a self-parody (if anything; more likely, he was just having fun without the restraints of his editor), but whatever he was going for, the blend of "serious" and "silly" didn't entirely work.

Um, I think it worked out perfectly and it is absolutely my favorite saga and i never scratched my head, so each to his own. Amen. And Banzai for the new movie!

Why all that excitement, that won't be the first movie taking place in this time period. There are also Wrath of the Dragon (1995) and Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! (2008)

It's because that era has great characters with great potential, but it was serverly bungled in the buu saga. It's one of the reasons why I like movies 12 & 13 the most since they did better justice then the buu saga did.

I mean really, last summer I reread vol 42 , and when goku saves mr Satan instead of his own kids and piccolo, after spending all that time to save them, I nearly threw the manga into the lake! It didn't help I had just read some evangelion manga beforehand so going for the best anime to.... That, was a large and unselting jolt. As such I believe this movie will be great just because it'll surely be better than the buu saga. Yea goku will proabaly be the overpowered hero but I'm not gonna expect otherwise and it'll be cool.

OK, fair enough. I guess we had different experiences, but I and many others scratched our heads over multiple oddities, including glaring plotholes and inconsistencies, in the Boo arc.

Same here. DBZ Movie #13 was both the only film that really felt like a movie (despite being shorter than DBZ Movie #8) - the rest just felt like extended episodes - and the one that made me actually like kid Trunks. It's my third favourite film, after DBZ Movie #12 and DBZ Movie #1. What would've made it better than it already was is if Mr. Satan and Mr. Boo appeared, and the latter fought.

I'm not a fan of the Hiroshi Takaki "score". I'm not exactly sure why. I guess it just doesn't measure up to Kikuchi or Yamamoto for me. If they do go with him, I hope he composes entirely new tracks.

We all know Yamamoto doesn't have a chance in hell, which I think is a shame.

I'd be perfectly happy if they just used old Kikuchi tracks like in the '08 special, but it'd be really awesome if there were some new tracks by him as well.

Someone entirely new might be interesting, too.

IDK, the Tokunaga score from the 1996 10th Anniversary film can could be a little flash in the pan as Takaki (2010s OVA), Kikuchi (most), or Yamamoto (Kai) in a slight 10:1 ratio.

Still surprised that we're getting a new Dragon Ball movie, with "the most involvement Toriyama's ever had." This, plus the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime series coming out in October (which I am admittedly more excited for than this seeing how JJBA is a much better series than DB), yeah, the near-future is looking well for anime in my book.

They did in 2006 as is Movie 6 and 12 in limited showings. Both are rated PG.

I didn't know about that but it's good to see some hype from the Japanese fans. I haven't seen a whole lot on US sites outside this one but I guess I don't lurk on any sites then.

I think Kanzenshuu is the only major one that is still alive since MFG and Planet Namek are long gone. I think most people come here for the latest Dragon Ball info then any other Dragon Ball related site. I would imagine when we more info in the next few months that we will likely have good amount of traffic on the forums.

My site is currently getting around 3k unique visits per day, which is actually a decrease of what it used to get during 2008-2010 and not nearly as much as DBthemovie.com (which has merged with mine since), but still very active nonetheless. Forum wise? Yes this place has one of the largest as not too many fan sites use forums these days. Want an highly active DBZ forum though? Visit Nicktoons or Toonzai.

The way I see it, they're going to completely ignore what Goku and Bulma said about the 5 year gap for the story's sake. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't even bring it up at all and retconned it.

Exactly. They still have the 5 years before that to work with, where Movie 13 and the JSAT special are set.
