From 1080p to 4K, I'd be surprised if you were gaining anything more than just grain detail from a 16mm master of an animated show.
I'll take 4K for every 35MM entry from the franchise. That would be pretty interesting to see.
Or we can summon a genie and wish for all the cels back so they can reshoot the entire thing again.

Has Japan made any movies or TV shows in 4k yet? I know Toho mention that they have consider doing all of their Godzilla movies in 4k. I think they can do the DBZ movies in 4k as Funimation's next way to milk the license in a few years from now.

Since Funi does give input when things are produced, I'm sure thats on the tableHellspawn28 wrote:Has Japan made any movies or TV shows in 4k yet? 4K is not some cheap gimmick though. It's the next step up in terms of digital picture detail, so it appeals to a wider audience. The worst case scenario I see for it is coexistence with 1080p sets not unlike Blu-Ray's coexistence with DVD.Baggie_Saiyan wrote:I doubt 4K will catch on at all. 3D didn't, people are still buying DVD's and we will need upgraded TV's and 4K players, I really can't see 4K catching on at all.Hellspawn28 wrote:I wonder if we will see 4K restoration soon in the near future? From what I've heard that 4k can be the next thing in home video in a few years from now. I just got a brand new big screen HD TV last year, so I'm not ready to move on. I didn't get a HD tv until 2010, a few years when HD started to catch on.

If we see the completion of my level set type release (even if it's just Z) I'd be happy

I'm a little bit surprised that Toie hasn't put the movies out on blu ray. I thought they would do that since it would be easy to just scan 13 movies in 1080p and release them as opposed to the whole series. It also would have been perfect timing to release that before Battle of Gods came out.

Dragon Boxes might be enough for them for now since it's the first release?
Also, anyone have any ideas why the Season 2 bluray is under review on amazon?

Yeah, we'd need a genie, since they've been scattered all over the earth by now.AjayLikesGaming wrote:From 1080p to 4K, I'd be surprised if you were gaining anything more than just grain detail from a 16mm master of an animated show.

Collect all the cels, and summon the dragon!
But nah, most of them were probably destroyed by now.

Which is tragic.
It really is a shame that the series wasn't preserved as well as it could have been.

Most cels are distributed or taken when they're not used anymore. Ninja Turtles sold their cels off at Toys R Us, Disney used to sell some too and you can get Batman TAS ones as well (though they were not officially sold *or at least most of them*) I was suprise TOEI still had some cels.FatNagger69 wrote:Which is tragic.

I'd suppose they were either trashed and people took them or animators took them. The Sonic cartoon *(US one)* you can buy lots of cells from a someone who worked on the show.

It is, but if the masters are kept in good shape then there really is no need for them. I think re-animating (recapturing) the show would cost to much for it to be worth it though.FatNagger69 wrote:That's the tragic part.eledoremassis02 wrote:Most cels are distributed or taken when they're not used anymore.FatNagger69 wrote:Which is tragic.

I think the level Blurays are the best the series ever looked

and if Toei did it with their masters, then you would have an even better release (grain and contrast would be much better)
But if the grain is a problem, then Dbox wins. I think when it comes to older TV shows DVD is probably the best over bluray.

If anyone hasn't picked up season 9 yet, I highly suggest you pick it up just for the "A Completely Serious Discussion About the Comedy of Dragon Ball Z" feature, it's hilarious. Here's a clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbLq_NfLN9A

Yeah it's not too bad. I watched about 20 minutes of it so far.Codarik wrote:If anyone hasn't picked up season 9 yet, I highly suggest you pick it up just for the "A Completely Serious Discussion About the Comedy of Dragon Ball Z" feature, it's hilarious. The interview with Josh Martin is incredibly boring though.
