I don't think CG looks bad when a character originates from it. Pixar is proof that when you have skills in both the standard 2D format and you utilize that in 3D models for something like Toy Story or whatever then you can make beautiful art. That's because they care about making beautiful art.

That's debatable I think for some artists working on anime. The rush job may also blemish the time they have to make their art beautiful.

But back to CG looking bad when a character isn't introduced in that style. DBZ was a flat 2D drawn manga that has a style best suited to 2D. It just doesn't translate as "cool" into a 3D model and we will never get used to it really. Take the peanuts movie for example. The trailers look good but it loses a bit of charm in the process of it's translation from a 2D medium.

I think DB just won't work in 3D really.

Best-case scenario, it'd probably look something like Ultimate Tenkaichi. And while that game was kinda visually cool (and...not particularly cool in many other ways but that's a separate discussion), it did look a bit...weird. Like trying to make the DB style look too realistic, I guess? I dunno.

Gokû's hair alone would be impossible in a cgi show. It's not as noticeably illogical in 2D because it's drawings instead, but the second he turns his head in the videogames the model looks off. It's got Astro Boy physics, unfortunately.

DB in 3D, huh? Well, I'm fine with it as long as it doesn't look like this...

I like his model in xenoverse though. I actually enjoyed most of the cutscenes.

I just saw the new "extended" trailer, and I must admit my excitement for the new series has been quite dampened. No wonder Toei hasn't been doing a big promotional push for Dragon Ball Super. If they're going to put such shoddy animation into a trailer for the first new Dragon Ball TV series in 18 years, then I don't know what that says about what the show itself is like. That shot of Beerus blocking the red Yu-Gi-Oh monster's punches looked awful. So bad that it reminded me immediately of this infamous collection of bad Toriko animation. Even the original Dragon Ball Z anime series never looked that lazily made -- at least not in a fight scene.

If it was just one throwaway segment in a 22-minute episode, I wouldn't harp on it, but this was something they put in the trailer. Someone had to have looked at this scene and thought, "This is representative of our show and will get people excited to see how awesome it is." :wtf:

Nothing else from the trailer really stood out to me. I like the art style's general look -- bright and colorful, but not too glossy, but everything comes across as so bland and stiff in motion. Also, if this ends up retelling the two recent movies instead of bridging the gaps between them, then I'm going to go berserk. Why the devil would any sane company retcon two immensely successful, high-grossing feature films, only to reenact their events with worse animation? Why would you do it!!!

To commemorate this embarrassing display of ineptitude, I will be maintaining a "Has Toei Animation Done Something Stupid Today Counter" in my signature -- inspired by this worthy website that tracks DC Comic's mess-ups.

I have no problems with DB in 3D CGI. Toriyama's art is very accurate that it always works in 3D, and none of the anime adaptions ever succeed to represent the amazing details that Toriyama draws, which can be fully visualized with CGI.

Toei Animation did produce something like this with a big budget though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAch4diQRgY

The trailer doesn't prove it, but "body language" reinforced, at least to me, that Champa will be really strong, but still Beerus' inferior. But seems like he's also a God of Destruction. At this point, I have gave up on fitting the movies into the narrative until second notice. It makes less and less sense the more I try to think for myself of how it could all fit. Instead I will look to the movies as non-canon and Super as the new thing with no preconceived notions.

I hope Champa and Beerus are brothers, though. I don't want there to be a God Race, nor for them to all be cats, even if I'm reconsidering the story validity of the movies.

They managed to animate Mickey Mouse in 3D, ears an all
Why not Goku?

Didn't Beerus ask Goku if he wanted to be the God of Destruction after Beerus dies? That implies to me that it's more of a position than an innate identity. Kind of like Earth's Kami

Nice catch.

Guess that proves what we theorised all along: it was just a placeholder!

Like most of these types of show, popularity and merchandise sales will dictate its length.
Either that or they realized they leaked something they shouldn't have.

How does Goku's hair even work?

Announcerguy had a fun comic about this a while back.

I think Toriyama did try while illustrating the Kanzenban covers to make Gokû's hair make a little more sense, but it's definitely a difficult task.

I honestly didn't like his take at trying to make sense of it. There were too many bangs and combined with the rest of Goku's body just didn't feel like Goku at all.

CGI in anime is no problem when used for artistic or legitimate purposes, such as for dynamic camera work or complex action shots.

It's not okay, in my eyes, to use it to excuse laziness, cut corners or wax over shoddy work.

They seem to handle it decently in 3D games.

judging from his side view, back of his hair most likely spiked to go to his forehead instead of sides, now his side hair would probably be shaped up similar to a cockatoo

Here is how Goku would actually look if he actually bothered to brush all that hair down, not sure if you guys would like it but i think it looks freaking cool.
