In GT & video games, the tail never turned golden in SSJ. So, it's just this how it actualy works.

Personally, I prefer the idea that you can only become a Super Saiyan without the tail...
But honestly, I'm surprised so many of you are defending this special so much. It's not that I dislike Bardock...I actually like him more than I feel like he deserves to be liked as a character (with the amount of screen time/importance to the series). But you're really telling me that you believe someone less powerful than Vegeta (when he first came to earth) could become a Super Saiyan? He literally doesn't fit any of the bills. He's not "pure evil" or whatever Vegeta claims, he's not pure of heart like his son, his father wasn't a Super Saiyan, he didn't have any other-worldly training or insane ambition, his "trigger" seems forced, and he would probably lose to Cui.

Rule of drama. Shall our lovable hero turn into bad, smelly monkey or maybe start to shine like precious stone? If I were as mischievous as I'm told to be I'd say that I see lack of creativity here.

Yeah definitely. Also, in the anime, it just keeps dragging on with Nozawa yelling like he's supposed to be powering up (really reminds me of Schemmel's first Super Saiyan transformation attempt in the original Z dub), and the whole thing just lacks any impact. Especially since Bardock calms down right away and saying something like "look at the amazing power I have". He's definitely not in a rage, and the whole thing just feels very contrived.batistabus wrote:his "trigger" seems forced.
Yeah, definitely. It was shockingly out of character when that kid (whatever the hell his name was) was getting beaten up by Chilled, and that seem to set the final spark for Bardock's transformation.kei17 wrote:This. Why has he become nicer? I do think that he was just a ruthless bastard until he was killed (not in this story though) by Freeza. He learnt some kind of compassion through the deaths of his team members, but that's all. He fought for his pride and the destiny of the Saiyan race, but he was thinking about nothing more than that, and was still selfish just like other Saiyans. I don't understand why such a man changed his mind so quickly in this story.Michsi wrote:And now he feels compassion.

I'll get the off-topic part of this out of the way first, but I just had to touch on it.
Major kudos for the reference.
Now, as for the subject of this special (which I'm attempting to watch now), I don't see why everyone's so surprised. We already knew how contrived and unrealistic Bardock's transformation was via the manga. I wish they'd made it better here too, but it wasn't really that expected was it?
As for me, I like Bardock quite a bit, but even I feel he was a little out of character here. Not a lot but a good bit. Someone earlier described him as tsundere here, and he really is sadly - but then again, so is Vegeta in the DBZ movies. I'm excited for this special for the sole purpose of 'Look, another new animation!'. Regardless of how big of a jump on Bardock's character it is, this is nice to me.
It's also a little weird for me, to finally see an official adaption (it got to me in the manga too) with Bardock as a Super Saiyan. I had a fanfic going on the idea a while back, but I've never continued it. Feel a little bad given that I STILL get reviews asking for more after three years of no updating but I just don't know if I really want to go back to it at this point.

I'd have to agree honestly. I always liked the tail turning golden when the hair does, personally.AceSharp wrote:This, I dislike.DBZGTKOSDH wrote:The tail turns golden in SSJ3 only.shinmaru wrote:Bardock tail should be yellow
It's lazy animating. Surely, if your hair turns golden, all your hair turns golden...

This was another thing I disliked about this movie, how light in tone and cartoony it was. That reaction shot is something right out of a Looney Toons, and the citizens of Plant looked like something from a preschooler's cartoon, and didn't fit the tone of Dragon Ball Z, or specifically the tone set by the Bardock TV special, which this is a huge contrast to.
It wouldn't have been a real issue if it was an early Dragon Ball movie, but it's not.

In the end Bardock walks away, but to make it more like the real legend Bardock should turn Oozaru and go out of Controle(because he is ssj and still got his tail) and destroy a whole planet and get killed him self,
That sounds more like the legend.

I thought Chilled's eye-pop reaction was more a One Piece influence than Warner Bros. I've seen that reaction fairly often in the OP manga/anime.

Honestly, the animation was so fluid in that scene, that I didn't care what they were showing. I just enjoyed it as much as I could for what it was. So what if it doesn't fit the tone of what this special should've been? Practically nothing else about it did either. To me, these select animation gems were the only thing redeeming about this special.

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Hm. I haven't seen much One Piece (I've only watched through till the end of the Arlong-arc), and haven't watched it in many months, so I couldn't recall that. Though even Dragon Ball has had it's share of eye-pop reactions, but either way it's still a lighthearted reaction, which I think, along with the designs of the inhabitants of Plant and Bardock's sudden change of heart just contrasts way too sharply in tone with the TV special. It's not like Bardock's eyes popped out like that when he saw Freeza's giant blast heading straight for him at the end.Chuquita wrote:I thought Chilled's eye-pop reaction was more a One Piece influence than Warner Bros. It's pretty jarring going from one to the other.
I know, that's what I'm saying. I've also been discussing other things that are too out of place as well, but that one just stood out to me.batistabus wrote:So what if it doesn't fit the tone of what this special should've been? Practically nothing else about it did either.

While i can agree, that it`s a little strange, that this Bardock is more like Funimation one, and the way he become SSJ seem kinda forced (But still better, then Goku Jr. having to transform into SSJ, to beat Demon Paozu, who had trouble beating ordinary bear, speaking of which, i never read heard any fan complaining about that special, is it, because it`s GT?), i still prefer when Toei favor Bardock, than when he favor Broly.

I noticed that there is no English subs when watching the video. That's too bad but it looks like I will wait when the DVD ever comes out (If it has subs).

I think the best release we will ever get in english localization will be rip of this special with fansubs......
Or Raging Blast 3 with SSJ Bardock and this movies as feature in the same fashion like Ragin Blast 2 had Hachihyaku?
I'm really curious about this SSS Project.
Some idiot was again boasting about Hoshi on youtube under videoclips from this feature claiming it will have SSJ5 and it will be done by Toriyama and Ooshi

Re: Episode of Bardock: Giant On-Going Manga + Anime Discuss
Not to open up a can of worms (which I'm sure it will, which is why I'm hesitant to say this) but I honestly didn't find the dub of the Bardock special that far off when I watched it subbed recently. The character himself though, they definitely portrayed as way more heroic than he was. I think he was definitely a better person than say, Vegeta, when we first see him.
Anyway, just finished this special, and...well, there it is? It was better than the manga version I feel, but still would have been better if they'd fleshed it out more. From what I could make out (kind of sad to be to this point where just by scenery, I can watch DB raw and more or less understand it...), they made Bardock's transformation a tad more believable. The imagery to me, makes it seem more like he's remembering his crew, and Beri is a trigger, rather than it actually being FOR Beri. So it's a bit more believable, motivation-ally speaking...if that makes any sense.

You do know that eastern animation was influenced by western animation... right? So things like Popeye, Looney Tunes, Betty Boop, amongst others were the inspiration for many of the older cartoons we see coming out of Japan, and since those older cartoons are the inspiration for the new cartoons.. You see where this is going.Chuquita wrote:I thought Chilled's eye-pop reaction was more a One Piece influence than Warner Bros.
