I prefer the name "Hercule" to "Mr. Satan". I think people defend it simply because it's the original name.

The Japanese use words like "devil", "satan", "God" (as in the one God) and other Christian terminology just because they look and sound cool or because they fit the themes of whatever pop-culture thing they're making, without realizing that to a Western audience, it has religious implications that can't be ignored.

I'm not religious so I'm not offended and don't care about anyone who is, and I know religion probably doesn't exist in the DB universe, but the idea that the champion of the world is called Mr. Satan and everyone, including children are cheering his name "SA-TAN! SA-TAN!" is just absurd to me. Sure it's funny, but I don't think that was the intention, and it takes me out of the moment. I realize "Hercule" also has religious origins, but it comes from one that's dead, and it's easier to accept that his name is based on a mythological hero rather than the lord of darkness and evil.

I'm not trying to censor anything, I just believe in localization. That's why I don't have a problem with "Krillin" versus "Kuririn".

Knowing Toriyama he knew exactly what he was doing when he called him Satan. He probably thinks the idea of them screaming Satan is hilarious.

I agree the Satan probably was probably just a cool name that Toriyama thought of, and it doesn't have the same connotations over here. However, there's definitely some interesting symbolism, intentional or not, when everyone on Earth is like "Fuck this guy, muh Genki is mine!!!" at the end of the Boo Arc, but the second "Satan" calls on them, they chant his name and give up as much Genki as he needs. I'm not religious either, but that's an interesting picture that you lose by changing his name to Hercule (that, and name puns are good). That's really the problem with making really unnecessary changes for the sake of localization, it always fucks with something that would have been better off left alone

I never really bought the "Potara are so much stronger" thing that fans are spitting out all the time. Yes, the characters need to have equal power while doing the dance but that is for being synchron, like with their similiar height and all. No one really knows if, when fusing together, that really mattersfor the result of power or if the fusion then actually merges all power those characters have. And in case of Vegetto and Gogeta I doubt that they are that different in power anyway because they both are a rival fusion. Better - yes, stronger - hardly, if at all, I guess.

Well, his name is his name. Speaking for myself, it's not out of a sense of "purism", but respect for the art. I'm not too interested in someone else's interpretation. I welcome proper, equivalent adaption and/or localization, if the spirit is nearly identical. I draw my personal line when the identity of the work is altered. I don't mind "The H-word" appearing on television (though I prefer "Mr. Savage" if censorship were necessary at all). Television has its strict guidelines; Home releases & video games are lenient. I don't think anyone official has, or even can, justify retaining (& effectively forcing, when it relates to outside media) the change outside of public syndication.

I wouldn't say massive, but yeah, from Boo on, the character designs develop a similar, bland look to what we have in GT and DBS.

Would you mind going into more specific detail on what you don't like?
