That shitstorm started because a dub fan was feeling leftout of the Dragonbox lovefest because Funi stated this release ain't for the casual fan.Deep Thought wrote:I vomited in rage and disgust. You always manage to raise my expectation and crumble them in a swift motion, Daizex. I'm sorry if this is coming off as extremely offensive, but this elitism in its purist form almost caused me to shake with rage.
English Dragon Box Release
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.
Oh, no doubt. I actually hope that lots of people buy this set (I'd like to see it outperform the season sets, although that seems unlikely). It's kind of a conundrum. They did a shitty thing, but without that shitty thing we might not get these sets, even though in the end it's +2 for FUNi and -2 for the fans no matter how you look at it.Raki wrote:If this were any other show I'd say fuck it. But it's damn Dragonball for crying out loud. The show that is practically responsible for my anime and manga habit. I was one of the those who bought all the sets, faults and all. But being as Funi admitted to fucking up at Otakon, I will reward their honesty with one LAST purchase of Dragonball Z in DVD form. No more after this Funimation.

+1 for us fan if we sell the sets to the stores and -1 if we buy Dragon Box. 1+-1=0. In the end we won't get hurt at all.DBW wrote:Oh, no doubt. Basically this. I can't say I've bought as much as everyone here; I've bought season one, assorted singles, the movies, and that's pretty much it. I refused to buy them because FUNi treated the series so horribly. But now, here, they're finally admitting "okay, we thought you guys would love the cropping, but you didn't, so here: one last hurrah, no strings attached, we apologize."Raki wrote:But being as Funi admitted to fucking up at Otakon, I will reward their honesty with one LAST purchase of Dragonball Z in DVD form. FUNi's finally learned that their tampering gets them nowhere, so they're going back to the basics and just putting the show out there with no gimmicks. No widescreen, no cheap remastering, no "extreme," just a humble little show from the 80's/90's being presented for what it is. And best of all, FUNi's taking PRIDE in it. I wanna reward honesty like that. FUNi's done good, and it's nice to know I can lay down my money for what really is a definitive collection.
Yes, I know it's too soon to sing their praises when we don't have the release in our hands yet, but I'm willing to give FUNi the benefit of the doubt for once, especially since they've basically admitted that their products get worse when they try to make them better.

The problem, as I see it, is not that people have opinions, or even that some of them don't necessarily express them in a proper shonen way-- it's that a LOT of people on both sides of the dub/sub argument simply don't know how to debate. A debate in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing, because debates are actually a very effective means of communicating, comparing and utilizing information. But when the same people raise the same arguments with the same bullet points over and over and over again to where it just looks like we're all swimming in vomit, it becomes reduced to shit and deals a blow to our collective credibility on the whole.Deep Thought wrote:There, I feel much better now that I've written this. Honestly, this wouldn't have happened Rampant Dub Douchebags and Elitist Japanese Dipshits would just SHUT THE FUCK UP.
This release, as well as anything else pertaining to the series, is certainly worth debating over in a way that it pertains to the dissolution of facts and sounding of opinions. It just needs to be done in a way that doesn't make us look like children, which not everyone knows how to do.

I think that it's safe to say that whatever Blu-ray plans they had with their 1080p "remaster" are out the window and that they'll just wait for Dragonball Kai.MagicBox wrote:But being as Funi admitted to fucking up at Otakon, I will reward their honesty with one LAST purchase of Dragonball Z in DVD form. I spend most of the day away from home and the computer and something astonishing like this happens.
Well, no sense in reading through 30+ pages, but I did read the first 11 if that counts. :3
Anyways; I'm SO happy I held out instead of buying the orange bricks; a duel-language Dragon Box release sounds AMAZING!
I have a bunch of Funi singles; maybe I should sell them.... (but first I need to learn how to sell items over the internet in the first place. o_o;; )
*Does some math*
If there's 42 episodes per set then that means there should be around...6 or 7 boxes total?

I know what you're saying. It really makes me like FUNimation even more. I've always thought they were an awesome company. It really seems like they listen to the fans, and this is proof. I know, I know, FUNimation didn't listen to us in the past, and I'm sorry that some people were angry about it. But this should redeem them.MagicBox wrote:FUNi's finally learned that their tampering gets them nowhere, so they're going back to the basics and just putting the show out there with no gimmicks. Really though, FUNimation, this is what I want. Don't give us Z but not Dragon Ball or GT.
Dragon Ball doesn't get enough love. And that makes me sad.
You and me both. While I think the DBZ release is more necessary than the DB release, I really prefer DB to DBZ.Innagadadavida wrote:I know what you're saying. I can guarantee you that there will be a US Dragon Ball DVD Box(Dragon Box) Release. They're releasing them exactly how toei did it with their Dragon Boxes.Innagadadavida wrote:I know what you're saying. It really makes me like FUNimation even more. Might go GT than DB as they're still doing there "Remastering" for the casual fan.

Personally, as long as the DB Season Sets are in 4:3 and have the same quality Japanese audio from the original 2-disc sets, I'll be happy, and I won't feel the need for a re-buy or Dragon Box quality. Same for GT, I'm satisfied with those sets as well.
But DBZ got poorly handled in their DVD releases, so that's why I'll be sure to get the Dragon Boxes for these. But that will complete all 3 DB series in 4:3, so I'll good after this.... until FUNi releases Kai, that is...

Then what incentive would there be to buy an eventual Dragonball DragonBox?Daimo-Rukiri wrote:I actually think FUNi might pull us a DBOX Dragon Ball here. I mean they just announced they got them, they may just put Pony Canyons remaster instead of there own on the DB sets. It's not even august yet!

That's personally what I'm hoping for. I will not buy the original DB again after this "Season" release. DBox footage would be fantastic, but as long as it's 4:3, I'll be happy.Daimo-Rukiri wrote:I actually think FUNi might pull us a DBOX Dragon Ball here. I say: screw cover consistency, the Japanese releases of all 3 series have different packaging and didn't match, so that doesn't bother me one bit.
