I assume Toei created both digital masters and actual film masters ten years ago when they did the Dragon Boxes? If so I would have to assume that the digital masters are not up to code with high definition standards so the film prints would have to be re-scanned for an actual high-definition release.

I really hope this is 4:3!

I remember a while back one of our resident videophiles had said that usually digital masters such as those are kept at a much higher resolution than anything we would ever see on home-video. I don't remember exactly who said it though.

Technically that's correct, you want the highest resolution when you're encoding in MPEG-2. With blu-ray they could just release it as raw.Kendamu wrote:I remember a while back one of our resident videophiles had said that usually digital masters such as those are kept at a much higher resolution than anything we would ever see on home-video. I also believe it's not unheard of for digital restoration to be done at lower-resolutions for time/money concerns. Given this is Toei I wouldn't be surprised if the finished product of the DragonBoxes was only output in 480p.
Pure conjecture on my part.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I would consider that the more likely scenario had it not been for the fact that our Dragon Boxes look slightly different than the Japanese Dragon Boxes. I'm not the guy who can explain all of that in exact detail, though. I'm just hoping that someone who does know more about this stuff comes in and can explain it.
In any case I wasn't being serious about a color corrected Dragon Box. It just sounded like an extremely inexpensive way for FUNi to go about it and I felt like like making a joke. This is especially true after that footage was found in early versions of the original Blu-ray featurette on YouTube.
In all seriousness I'm just waiting to hear whether or not these will be widescreen.

That was true back in the early/mid 00s, but generally only in regard to studio films.Kendamu wrote:I remember a while back one of our resident videophiles had said that usually digital masters such as those are kept at a much higher resolution than anything we would ever see on home-video. We know for a fact Toei did everything for the dboxes at 480, so any such discussion for DBZ doesn't mean much.

Wow, it's crazy to believe it's been 10 years since the Dragonball Z Dragon box!JulieYBM wrote:I assume Toei created both digital masters and actual film masters ten years ago when they did the Dragon Boxes? Back on topic. I still wonder if 16x9=4:3 w/ black bars.

If the black bars are a part of the image than yes it's 16x9 and is not false marketing.eledoremassis02 wrote:Wow, it's crazy to believe it's been 10 years since the Dragonball Z Dragon box!JulieYBM wrote:I assume Toei created both digital masters and actual film masters ten years ago when they did the Dragon Boxes? If the description says "season sets on blu-ray" then that's exactly what we should expect.

That' wording is probably just to qualify "first time ever." If they said that it was the first time DBZ was on Blu-ray, we'd have been all over them saying, "What about the Level sets?!" Saying that it's the first time whole "seasons" have been on Blu-ray is still true, even if it's just a shallow attempt to get people to forget the Levels.Fizzer wrote:If the description says "season sets on blu-ray" then that's exactly what we should expect.

And they will be using selective cropping and pan & scan for this?Daimo-Rukiri wrote:If the black bars are a part of the image than yes it's 16x9 and is not false marketing.

Yeah, it says season sets , which were in 16:9, because the orange bricks were season sets, no?qjz123 wrote:I was looking at the Dragon ball z season 1 blu ray on amazon and the description has changed it no longer says that the release is being converted to 16:9 it just says "For the first time ever, the Dragon Ball Z season sets are available on Blu-ray!" http://www.amazon.com/Dragonball-Z-Seas ... f_cr_p_d_1
Re: Dragon Ball Z "Season One" Coming To Blu-Ray (Updated 09
Or it says season sets because it's an entire season(Funimation season) on blu ray, but thats not the point the point is why did amazon remove the fact that these sets have been converted to 16:9 in the first place.sangofe wrote:Yeah, it says season sets , which were in 16:9, because the orange bricks were season sets, no?qjz123 wrote:I was looking at the Dragon ball z season 1 blu ray on amazon and the description has changed it no longer says that the release is being converted to 16:9 it just says "For the first time ever, the Dragon Ball Z season sets are available on Blu-ray!" http://www.amazon.com/Dragonball-Z-Seas ... f_cr_p_d_1

Thats what I wondered too..and the fact that Target and such labeled the level sets as "widescreen"qjz123 wrote:Or it says season sets because it's an entire season(Funimation season) on blu ray, but thats not the point the point is why did amazon remove the fact that these sets have been converted to 16:9 in the first place.sangofe wrote:Yeah, it says season sets , which were in 16:9, because the orange bricks were season sets, no?qjz123 wrote:I was looking at the Dragon ball z season 1 blu ray on amazon and the description has changed it no longer says that the release is being converted to 16:9 it just says "For the first time ever, the Dragon Ball Z season sets are available on Blu-ray!" http://www.amazon.com/Dragonball-Z-Seas ... f_cr_p_d_1

Honestly if by some miracle it is in 4/3, many people will have been carried away with speculation.

I just rebought the entire friggen series except for 4 disks in the single release version so I could get it in 4:3 with Japanese audio and the Bruce Faulconer American Broadcast, so I will def fall into that categoryMartinrock wrote:Honestly if by some miracle it is in 4/3, many people will have been carried away with speculation.
