Gaffer Tape wrote:You misunderstand. I said it was similar in regards to structure. That Tao Pai Pai's order was arranged to fight his enemies in ascending order (Chaozu, Tenshinhan, Goku), just as Jackie Chun's order had been arranged to fight the heroes in ascending order (Yamucha, Kuririn, Goku).
Oh okay. That makes sense, my bad.
RandomGuy96 wrote:-Why is Chi Chi even a thing? This character is totally baffling to me and I don't know she exists other than to produce children.
Pretty much the purpose of a lot of female characters in Shonen.
-Chiaotzu is just Ten's Puar. I actually wonder why he gets to be in all of the group shots, both in the manga and the promotional material. Yajirobe is far more worthy of a spot, even if Chaozu eventually (far) surpasses him.
Even then, Pu'erh has had more of an impact on the narrative than Chaozu has, when you think about it.

I definitely think that Tenshinhan vs. Taopaipai could've used more storytime to make it a lot more climatic. I don't mind it myself but I see where Gaffer's coming from.

Speaking of height, I'm surprised you didn't mention that Tenshinhan is outright gargantuan at the 23rd Budokai. Like, Goku's head barely comes up to his chest.
As well as Goku seeming less stout, the height difference is what made me think that Goku wasn't quite fully grown here... but then there's all the other height consistencies in this arc you pointed out, so in the trash goes that theory!

That theory still works. Even ignoring Giant!Ten and Giant!Yamcha, Goku does appear shorter than he does five years later. He's maybe an 3-5 cm taller than Chi Chi, and almost the exact same height as Bulma.

Please elaborate as I do not know what you mean by "pushing Vegeta's destruction"
He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke
Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Good to know.
I was wavering between it being an intentional choice by Toriyama that makes loads of sense, and it just being because he forgot the heights and started to draw everyone in a more angular way later (making characters look older).

I've been a fan of this series for the past 2 years. I have to say, I was a bit disappointed with the latest episode. I feel there was so much more you could've gone into with Tenshinhan and Kuririn's fights. You could have highlighted how much has changed for Ten and how his personality in this tournament is far different than what it used to be. He's learned to control his pride and arrogance. Also, Kuririn's fight to me is just so emotionally satisfying and I feel it brought his development to a fine close. The moment where Roshi says he's become a splendid martial artist is such an integral part of Kuririn's story, I'm surprised you didn't mention it. I don't know, but this episode just felt very rushed to me.

I'm sorry to hear you were disappointed. People do tend to forget, though, that I have a big ol' section at the end of every arc where I talk about overall developments to the plot and characters.

Well, I guess not liking one episode out of 30 isn't too bad

(DBD: Mystical Great Adventure)
The month of Chao... I mean, Dragon Ball Dissection December continues with this final look into the DB film trilogy.
I apologize for not keeping up with comments very well lately. It's very difficult for me to stay on schedule with this as it is. But don't think I haven't been enjoying reading them. As always, thanks for watching.

I'm a little surprised at the lack of mention of just how beautiful this movie is. The choreography, art, and animation are all just top notch here, and the fights are fantastic for it.

Well, good think Master Roshi sabataged Yamcha, otherwise Tao may have killed him next round.

Come to think of it, I'm a bit surprised too! It is an absolutely gorgeous movie. I guess I kinda hoped showing some of those amazing landscape shots might get the point across.

Probably not. He had no reason to want to kill Yamucha since he had nothing to do with the missing Dragon Ball. The only reason Tao Pai Pai entered the tournament was to get his chance to confront Bora, who had eluded him the night before. If Yamucha had won that match, then Goku or Kuririn probably would have stepped up next. Assuming one of them won, then Tao Pai Pai might have decided to get involved.

Plenty of times in DB the antagonist kills people for no reason. I mean, I don't think you're wrong, but I'm not gonna scream OUT OF CHARACTER if he tried to.

Maybe not out of character, but I certainly think doing so would have needlessly complicated their plan. Remember that Tao Pai Pai wasn't even originally competing in this tournament. He only stepped in at the very last second and only because Bora was at that moment being named the winner of the tournament (and by extension would have gotten to make a request of the emperor). He only stepped in because he HAD to. If Yamucha had won, Tao Pai Pai would have had no reason to make a scene over it, and bothering himself with that would have kept from dealing with Bora and the others, who might have had a chance to escape the kingdom if Tao Pai Pai needlessly stepped in to stop some (as far as he saw) random guy from winning the tournament.

I dont know why, but it really shock me, that Pilaf and his company were killed. Yes, they died during Super Buu Human Extinction attack (Or at least when Kid Buu destroyed Earth) But still, they managed to survive meeting with Piccolo Daimao.

Part 3 of 23rd Budokai
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Y6uUztKpXQ I agree, that Kami can be seen as kind of jerk, but it shows, that in DB, nobody is crystal clean, not even Gods themselves

This is the beginning of the Earthling stupidity by the way. It goes from believing that a green skinned man that looks similar to King Piccolo is just a normal guy, to utterly believing that a douchebag named Mark is the strongest there is, and everything they've seen before him were flashy lights and parlor tricks, even though Master Roshi is a martial arts celebrity, and everyone agrees King Piccolo was not performing light shows.
