I'm actually dumbfounded they haven't chosen an aspect ration considering there is a possibility of a release in December or early January you'd think this would be settled? And this makes me question if they decided to just drop 16x9 and go for a 4x3 release. OR they got better masters and less work has to be done.
When the orange bricks were coming out we knew for months of the 16x9 aspect ratio and they NEVER changed there minds about that, and if I understand aren't these guys from marketing?
Also, we know more than 39 episodes have been fully restored and since 2.2 was even marketed I can assume the entire Freeza ark has been restored well at least the ginyu portion.

Good point. If this is the case..will they have time to selectively crop each scene? Time is money and if they did this already then they would just stick with 16x9. Of course, dates can get pushed back.

It must be lucid and I must admit that there is just a faint hope but I plan on it. It is very likely that the 39 episodes are already treated but imagine that these 39 episodes are the fruits of the remastering of the Level sets.

We know they already have at least the first 39 episodes remastered in 4:3 selectively cropping the already remastered episodes won't take that long and Funimation hasn't even officially announced a release date yet.

As someone who hasn't bought any Funimation DBZ since the turn of the century, I just want to throw out there that if these seasons sets are a 4:3 release that looks just as good as the Level sets (read: keep up the awesome work you started there, Funi) would be instant buys from me all the way until the end

The current release date must still be a placeholder if the aspect ratio is up in the air at this point. Well, I tweeted at FUNimation a few days ago saying I want it in 4:3. Here's hoping a we can create a miracle.

In fact, if you want to quickly create a popular image, simply over saturate the colors and increase the contrast. While you may not achieve a sophisticated image, you will achieve an image that will please a less demanding audience." - Alain Briot

Their website is so broken that I can't even sign in to vote.

After about 10 minutes of screwing around, I managed to sign in. I've cast my vote. I will buy the crap out of these if we get what we want.

It's not an official poll, though.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Yeah, why are people freaking out about a random poll someone started on FUNimation's forums?

Again, I don't know how many times it needs to be said, but going on a few semi-active forums and overzealously trying to sway opinions one way or another is a futile effort. Again, FUNimation tried the release we all wanted. They were the level sets. If we bought them, FUNi's intensive faithful remastering process actually would've been cost-effective and this entire discussion wouldn't be happening right now. The level sets would either be near completion or bundled into cheap, high episode sets. But because we didn't, FUNi's going to the market that will buy it no matter what, which means they can go the easier route and just chop of the top and bottom without the burden of having to fix the extensive damage.
And that's the key part: THE CASUAL AUDIENCE DOESN'T CARE. They really don't. The furthest thing in the back of their minds when watching Dragon Ball is the footage at the top and bottom of the screen. If you show them a shitload of comparisons or try to make some emotional appeal about "integrity" and "artistic vision," it will fall on deaf ears because it's not of any importance - the fans just want the episodes of that awesome anime they love at an easy, affordable price, and as long as the show is there, they won't even notice those few extra spikes on Goku's hair or part of someone's belt. Those type of people aren't invested in the series the way the average user here is.

Okay, I think we all get that.
With that being said, the Level Sets were done with a crazy amount of time and money put into the restoration process which resulted in highly priced sets with less than a 'season' per set. As a result, a majority of the fanbase simply didn't have the money to drop on the sets as they released and were either waiting for discounts or waiting on at least a full season to wrap up.
You can't put that blame solely on the consumer. Had Funimation considered the ease of access of the season designations as one of the main selling points of those initial awful sets then perhaps they could have followed in the same vein by ensuing the Blu-Rays were just as accessible. Your average consumer looks at a Level Set and goes 'oh, that's expensive and it seems like I don't get an entire season' and they simply don't buy it. Ensure you're getting a full season and the consumer goes 'Well, that's not an awful price for an entire season!' and they may end up picking it up.
If the fanbase wants to make it abundantly clear now that their price and season designations will guarantee a sale should they keep the original aspect ratio then I see no issue there.
Yes, Funimation is a business and their primary goal is to sell as much as possible but that certainly doesn't mean passionate cries from fans falls on deaf ears. As shown by the response from the panel this morning, this aspect ratio uproar seems to have had some level of effect if what was said implies they're considering their choices right now. If anything, that should indicate a more vocal approach is needed to ensure the release we want is given the light of day.
Sure, going on about integrity and artisitc vision isn't likely to help but it can easily be used to reinforce the point that more episodes for less will guarantee sales as long as the product is worth our time.

If they're better than the Orange Bricks it's a good thing for fans who either need them or just want them. No use complaining if it is 16:9. They know they can milk this one series for years so I think patience is best. More will come and we might get lucky and it's not just more Z.
