The rating won't really matter that much. If merchandise sales are anything to by, Dragon Ball has become a full blown cash cow again in Japan.Super Birado wrote:One thing that concerns me: Based on the guides on this website, the ratings for even GT were WAY better. Re: Dragon Ball Super: TV Ratings Discussion Thread
as long as super's ratings stays on the top 10 list that means the ratings are good the way i see it

Re: Dragon Ball Super: TV Ratings Discussion Thread
So I was just wondering but because the ratings for One Piece weren't taken into account could that have helped the ratings for Super and other shows or no?
Re: Dragon Ball Super: TV Ratings Discussion Thread
Viewership DBGT was low compared to the DB / DBZ, but those were different times. Today, television pray for the audience as she DBGT series. You should not compare the DB / DBZ / DBGT to DBS.
Re: Dragon Ball Super: TV Ratings Discussion Thread
TV itself had way less competition back in 96/97 than it does today. The internet has pulled a lot of audiences away from regular TV.
Also there's a lot less children in Japan now than there was back then; Japan's birthrate is way down, so there'd be less new fans of everything (not just DB).

On hiatus.

Also, internet viewership is not represented in these figures. Sazae-san may be a popular family show on traditional TV, but I'm sure it fares much worse among the online demographic.Sodhi wrote:Thats just because there are a lot more television and channels in japan now. Then there's DVR which didn't exist in GT's time. Yes, there were VCRs, but DVRs are easier to use and are actually promoted and offered by cable companies.
Re: Dragon Ball Super: TV Ratings Discussion Thread
It seems episode 31 got a 6.6, pretty much the same as last week. But no top 10 ranking until tomorrow.
They are very good. To put things in perspective, GT very rarely made the top 10, while Super has been in the top 10 every single week since the first episode.Super Birado wrote:That makes sense, thank you. I hadn't really considered it. I guess it's all relative to the market share; that being said, are DBS's ratings considered "good"?

Re: Dragon Ball Super: TV Ratings Discussion Thread
The only things that could maybe be effected would be other shows that air in the same time slot as One Piece (that being 9:30AM on Sunday). All the shows that regularly make the top 10 air in different slots, so there's no direct competition between them.Retan wrote:So I was just wondering but because the ratings for One Piece weren't taken into account could that have helped the ratings for Super and other shows or no?
Re: Dragon Ball Super: TV Ratings Discussion Thread
This is the actual reason. In 1996, practically every single person that watched an episode of Dragonball GT was sitting in front of their TV and watching it during that half hour it was on. That's not the case with Super.LuckyCat wrote:Also, internet viewership is not represented in these figures. You can't compare TV ratings from the 90s with ratings from today. You just can't.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: TV Ratings Discussion Thread
You could compare Super to Kai, where the average is either worse (compared to Kai's original run) or around the same (for the Buu return). I don't think an all-new series bringing the same audience as a recut is impressive, but YMMV.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.
Re: Dragon Ball Super: TV Ratings Discussion Thread
The original Dragon Ball Kai seemed to have much better ratings because it'd regularly get ratings of 9.0+ and even 10.0+ and it used to place higher than Detective Conan.
Though ratings in general have gone down since then because One Piece doesn't even get that now, it usually gets within the 8 range.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: TV Ratings Discussion Thread
You can't compare it to the original Kai, either. Ratings changed a lot since then already, especially after 2011 when HDTV was established in Japan.Super Saiyan Prime wrote:You could compare Super to Kai, where the average is either worse (compared to Kai's original run)
Just take a look at this top 10 from April 2009 (when Kai had just started) and it's obvious:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... pril-13-19
Sazae-san 19.3
Chibi Maruko-chan 13.0
One Piece 10.1
Dragon Ball Kai 9.6
Fresh Precure! 7.8
Pocket Monsters: Diamond & Pearl 7.5
Naruto Shippūden 7.2
Detective Conan 5.8
Major 5 5.8
Yatterman 5.3
None of those shows get similar viewerships anymore. I mean, Precure, Pokemon and Naruto struggle to get half those ratings.
Conan used to do worse because it had a different and much worse timeslot: Mondays 6pm, compared to current Saturdays' evenings. All those other shows still running remained in the same timeslot.Bullza wrote:The original Dragon Ball Kai seemed to have much better ratings because it'd regularly get ratings of 9.0+ and even 10.0+ and it used to place higher than Detective Conan.

I don't know why exactly, but i've noticed a trend: pretty much everytime a show takes an unexpected break (like OP was interrupted last week), the delayed episode gets higher than usual ratings once it airs.Sodhi wrote:Everyone did good this week. Holy crap One Piece did really good.

Oh, you're here too Psykomatik !
I'm a little bit surprised about this rate this week, I mean, Super just start to have a consistent graphsimes/animation, and the new arc began with this hyped new story, I thought rate would start to take off from this..
Wait & See.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: TV Ratings Discussion Thread
Things 20 years ago are way different now. Super is doing fine with ratings and merchandise sales. Super will probably last for another two years at this rate. GT on the other hand, seem to went downhill early on which probably cause Toei to change their plans early on.Super Birado wrote:One thing that concerns me: Based on the guides on this website, the ratings for even GT were WAY better.
