Well not all Saiyans are evil. How come it's okay to have both good and bad humans, but it's wrong to have both good and bad saiyans  ?
Because it undermines how unique it makes Goku, being completely against traditional Saiyan nature. Now, he's just a combination of his mother and his father. That's... less than favorable to me.

Especially considering they make a point of shipping off the weak and/or gentle to other planets at a young age.

To me it reinforces Goku's quip to Vegeta when they first fought, and all the milestones he's achieved since then. A mother who was demoted to butcher, and a father who was just run of the mill Saiyan. Goku should have been and stayed a sentient weapon of mass destruction, by throwing him at weak worlds that have moons. And now he's an actual God of the series. He broke through his own limits, and having his mother who she is makes it more poignant.

Don't get me wrong, Minus harmed more than it helped, including yes, retconning his reasoning to be on Earth, but at least to me, Gine wasn't a mistake.

I'm not gonna re-write everything Gaffer already covered... I'm just going to post it here:

Watch that and get my position on the subject. His parents "loving him" does *not* help Goku's backstory at all.

I think Gine has potential, but not as used.

If I had my way, i'd show that despite being Gentle by Saiyan Standards, she's still a Saiyan. She doesn't love Goku the way a human mother would. She might accept Goku if he's gentle like her, but still hopes he'd be a warrior like his father, because that's what a Saiyan should be.

But i think that's just my own perspective as a Fanfic Writer. I view characters less in terms of how they are in canon and more in terms of what they can be in fanfic

I agree. Minus just straight up turned Bardock into Jor-El. My interpretation is that the Saiyans are perfectly capable of love and compassion as we understand them but their culture is such that such things are treated as relatively insignificant or even shameful. They're essentially space Spartans. Goku isn't great because he's a Saiyan but in spite of it. He demonstrates that the Saiyans squandered their potential by operating like they did. Vegeta might even be a better example because he really didn't achieve much until he started to shed his Saiyan-isms. The problem comes in that every time we revisit the Saiyans the writers seem to insist on painting them more and more as tragic heroes, essentially bestowing upon them all the character development that took Vegeta years to work through.

This isn't new, though. One thing about the Bardock special that bugs me is that he's so especially strong. And aside from the rest of the stupidity, that's one of my biggest beefs with Episode of Bardock, too. Whenever we revisit these people, whoever the protagonists are become uniquely powerful among the population. It seems like Goku's parents become increasingly special outliers every time we see them, which makes Goku look like he was born with a silver spoon or something and just didn't know it.

It kinda sucks that they spoiled their top 3 picks. I've always liked World's Strongest a lot, but I never considered it to be the best movie/special in the series. Top 10 for sure.
Heroes come and go, but legends are forever.

60.

Rest in peace.

I had a whole detailed thing about this, but nevermind, #2 wasn't what people thought it'd be (it was what I thought it'd be though):

I don't remember Jor-El genociding people...because that's what Dragon Ball Minus opens with, Bardock doing the same thing all Saiyan Warriors do, clearing out a planet by killing it's inhabitants. A murderer can still love their family you know. Rationalizing things will take you far down that route.

Goku's parents don't change who he was and who he is though. He was still trying to assault Grandpa Gohan, only to be stopped due to his training, his nature still changed after his head injury. Raditz is still a terrible person despite his parents (if anything, he takes after his father, but ups the terribleness by a few notches by not even having the familial love). Nature won out over nurture (as it seems Gine didn't pass on that gentle side genetically).

There's a tragic element to Goku's parents being comparatively decent people (emphasis on comparatively) who did at least one relatively noble deed (well, as noble as the instinct to keep your bloodline going is) of saving their child to be completely forgotten under the savagery of their race, and seen as no better than the rest in probably the only time Goku ever put a moment of thought into them (mostly deserved on Bardock's end).

Well, even if it isn't nr.1 I'm still more than happy that it's top 3. One of my favorite movies along with "Return my Gohan". Love the fight animation, adore the atmosphere and boy did I love that moment when all the fighters lined up to face Wheelo. That was a nice group shot :D

Was already kinda, sorta disappointed that neither of the specials got #1, but Battle of Gods is a good pick too :P

DBZ Movie 2 is pretty underrated and good to see it having some love. I used to hate it and now I like it a lot. I think the old 90's dub for the movie is underrated too.

I'm pretty happy about BoG being Number 1. Movie 2 was my favorite movie pre-BoG, but BoG has so much character and a great story, it did deserve it. Number 2 is a very fitting spot for World's Strongest.

I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

'Bout 78k away. We should close that gap in a half a year, at most.

Really, half a year? I thought that the bigger you got on Youtube, the easier it'd be to get more subscribers. But I suppose it's because Youtube isn't exactly promoting your videos (due to obvious reasons), right?

quick question

When making this DBcember, did you consider the crossover television special as a possibility, or was it discounted? (Or just plain not known about?)
