Spoilers ahoy....

Pretty ironic since Naruto has gone ever so rubbish after the beginning of Shippuden. Bleach isn't better, although it at times have some great fights.
Naruto had to save Sasuke in the final arc of the pre-timeskip arc and in Shippuden he first have to save Gaara and then has to "save" Sasuke.
You're completely off base concerning what Shippuden is about. It totally outclasses Part 1 in ever way.

But this has nothing to do with Dragonball.
I'm completely sorry for being off-topic, but I've gotta agree with Shoryuken. Shippuden sucks compared to Part I. Part I was filled with moments where I would literally cheer for Naruto and actually get goosebumps. Part 2 started off alright, but it soon became a glorified "Sasuke-fest" with uninteresting fights and overuse of "Plot-no-Jutsu".

But, yes, all of my friends(90% of which aren't into anime) know full well of my Dragon Ball fandom, because I'm not afraid to flaunt it. And they're all pretty accepting, too.

Naruto's plot has pretty much justified itself. Part II has been frustrating, but it's become more clear than ever that the story is about Naruto and that he is on the path towards accomplishing everything that same spunky kid from Part I boldly proclaimed he would, and much more so. The scope is much larger than the triffles of Neji or Gaara. In Part II Naruto has become a man through his experiences and has taken unto himself a feat far greater than his own original goal of being respected and acknowledge (which he has pretty much accomplished already by the end of the Pain arc). Kishimoto's pacing could improve, but otherwise his plotting and advancing of the lead has become much stronger in Part II.

Of course, not that the vocal majority of Naruto fans appreciate the series for such, as it is.

EDIT: Ack, I don't think I've contributed to the topic yet! To be honest, I don't quite think I can say much. Dragon Ball has really just been a show many of us watched as kids.

After reading that, I actually agree with you.

Basically, what I meant to say is that "I'm getting sick and tired of Sasuke. Kill him off her bring him back to Konoha, Kishimoto."

Hmm...my experiences on this topic? Probably things you've heard before, and giving you the shorthand version of it all...

-My friends who say they like anime/regularly watch anime, they all think Dragon Ball is stupid, has no plot, it reminds them of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, and [insert more bashing here]. They laugh, they joke, and then they go back to watching One Piece "because it's better". *face palm* It slightly sickens me when people reduce their opinion to biased statements like that.

- I have one friend who likes DBZ because he likes the fight scenes. He grew up watching it on Toonami and was more than content to buy the Orange Bricks and be done with it. So if I even start to talk about the Japanese version or how Funimation screwed up the bricks, things of that sort...alas, it tends to go right over his head. He just tells me to stop being a nerd and go buy the bricks for 30 dollars at Best Buy, instead of spending a ton of money to import the DBox singles and a multi-region DVD player like I had been planning on doing before Funi's announcement of their release of the DBox.

-Most people think I'm weird that I read the manga and like Toriyama as an actual artist/influence. I go to art school so if we're talking comics, most people like American artists...those who don't tend to pick anything BUT Dragon Ball for manga. (including things that make me cringe like yaoi/shonen-ai/fanservice/so forth)

-Furthermore they think I'm absolutely batshiz crazy because I rarely read the manga in English, and I will not buy anymore of it for my collection. Whatever. I can read the language in Dragon Ball fairly well, at least for my own personal enjoyment, it's not horribly complex Japanese, and I guess I enjoy skipping the middleman with their questionable translations/censorship even if it means waiting a little bit longer for Kinokuniya to ship books to me when I run out.

Overall, not too high of an opinion among actual physical people... Thank god for the internet, right?

It funny that I ran into this topic today. I whipped my laptop out at my community college and I have a Dragonball desktop image, no one said anything but I tried hiding it in fear of someone seeing it and making fun of me or something.

I'm kind of shy about that sort of stuff. When I'm with friends, I can talk about Dragonball all day and not care about what people think but I made the mistake of playing yu-gi-oh in middle school during lunch with people and this one asshole wouldn't stop calling me yu-gi-oh kid until freshmen year of high school when he finally dropped out(thankfully).

Thankfully, Peoples reactions(that I come across) to Dragonball are more positive. Like "Hey I remember that show" or "Wow, Dragonball. I use to watch that all the time back in the day."

Luckily, so far at my college, no one seems to give a shit about what you do.
...Wait what are you doing? Are you still reading this? I finished what I had to say, why don't you move on to the next post?

This reminds me of my desktop on my MacBookPro...it currently has a fanart that I found on the Japanese Tegakie site a long time ago... of Vegeta/Baby Trunks on it. Last time somebody used my computer they said they kept on being distracted by said background because the two were "being cute and kept staring at me." So that was a positive reaction of some sorts to my dorky fandom!

It fairly hard to see all of this "Path to Manhood" because of Naruto and Sakuras constant whining about how they would love Sasuke back and it does not help either that Kishimoto wants all of the spotlight on bland-as-ever Sasuke.

Now back on topic....
Dragon Ball was instrumental to form some great manga, for example One Piece. And yet Dragon Ball itself is kinda timeless.

Trust me, college isn't high school. Nobody really cares about that kind of thing...or at least to the point where they'd go out of their way to insult you over it.

That, and they're total strangers. So who cares?

I have a Goku keychain (Z era, all muscly and doesn't have his shirt on), and everyone who sees it is like "oh cool, is that Goku?"

Fondly remembering the show or even making a reference to it here and there is usually well-recieved, but tell people you can wait for the dragon boxes and that you wish Viz would bring over the Kanzenban will raise an eyebrow or three.

Here in Spain, when someone talk about Dragon Ball, people slightly smile and answer you about themselves growing watching Dragon Ball and if you talk to older people they always remember their sons watching the show and even those parents remember some names from DB and Dr. Slump and they even remember certain scenes!

No one other like a few people in my high school care about DBZGT other then the two people next to me in Computre class in 12th grade since the 9th grade. I remember in the 9th grade where a group of people and I where talking about Budokai Tenkachi look awesome and how Bojack in the game was cool.
