32Khz and 8bit audio as I recall.kei17 wrote:I definitely don't want that.LordCrumb wrote:I'd gift wrap my left nut and personally send it to you for the DBZ episodes you haveI'm also getting all the DBZ episodes with digital PCM audio on Hi8 tapes early next year, which must be the best sources left on earth. I'm seeking a way to make it available on official releases, so wait for good news.
Gonna have to deal with those very gingerly, as I recall Hi8 tapes starts going to their death after a tape has sat around 15ish years, even with good storage.

Yeah, I'm not sure they're still entirely playable considering they're delicate 8mm tapes, but the owner is a video nerd and his tapes must have been stored well. As for the bit depth, it's actually closer to 10bit.MarcFBR wrote:32Khz and 8bit audio as I recall.

I read through the earlier pages and saw you tried to contact Toei? did you try Funimation at all?

Pretty sure they're too busy trying to figure out new ways to rip off fans.LordCrumb wrote:Damn! I guess negotiations are off the table?

I double checked... it's definitely 8bit.kei17 wrote:As for the bit depth, it's actually closer to 10bit.

Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
It's recorded in 8bit, but in quiet parts, the gain is boosted beforehand. As a result, there's much less hiss noise compared to usual 8bit PCM audio. It was billed as "equivalent of 10bit," which is why I said it's closer to 10bit.MarcFBR wrote:I double checked... it's definitely 8bit.kei17 wrote:As for the bit depth, it's actually closer to 10bit.
Edit: I've uploaded a sample of PCM audio on Hi8. I used an over-a-decade-old ME tape.

Ehh... I get your meaning... but 8bit with boosted gain is just 8bit with the gain changed, not 10bit.kei17 wrote:It's recorded in 8bit, but in quiet parts, the gain is boosted beforehand. I guess he means that the compressed 8bit PCM audio on Hi8 sounds roughly the same as uncompressed 10bit PCM audio.MarcFBR wrote:Ehh... Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
Thats impressive! I hope the next Bluray release can use this kind of audio because it's weird watching really high quality video and low quality audio
Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
One of the very main reasons I dont watch Z in Japanese is because of the terrible audio quality. It just distracts me too much. I've always been more of an Audiophile than a Videophile.
Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
"Recorded in 8bit, equivalent of 10bit" was what Sony officially said. https://web.archive.org/web/20030617103 ... 800231.pdf (The processes turned out to be different than what I said.)MarcFBR wrote:Ehh... And I do find it actually better than what you get by normal downconversion. Anyway, I think that low quality PCM audio is more appropriate than unstable analog audio for official archiving considering reproducibility.
The same goes for me. I always find old TV shows hard to enjoy because of muffled audio.LordCrumb wrote:One of the very main reasons I dont watch Z in Japanese is because of the terrible audio quality. It just distracts me too much. I've always been more of an Audiophile than a Videophile.
Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
Yeah, but that's still believing random Sony statements of quality... which has never quite been 'true.'kei17 wrote:"Recorded in 8bit, equivalent of 10bit" was what Sony officially said. https://web.archive.org/web/20030617103 ... 800231.pdf (The processes turned out to be different than what I said.)MarcFBR wrote:Ehh... 8bit audio is 8bit audio. It could be mastered better, etc, but it's still 8bit. It's not going to be the 'equivalent' of 10bit. No doubt they found some way to fake it for the tests, but it's still 8bit.
It's like the contrast numbers on modern TVs. They can claim what they want, but it's bullshit.
The tapes are 8bit.

Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
Now I've got all the said 8mm videotapes. Sadly, some tapes are seriously damaged and almost unplayable.
I tried syncing it with the DBox footage and the outcome is awesome! I uploaded a sample: https://box.yahoo.co.jp/guest/viewer?si ... ype=detail

That's a shame but at least you still have the older audio despite the high pass filter applied.kei17 wrote:Now I've got all the said 8mm videotapes. Sadly, some tapes are seriously damaged and almost unplayable.
Thanks for uploading this preview. It sounds absolutely fantastic!

Comparing it to FUNi's clean up, I'm surprised how well FUNi's sounded in comparison. Original Broadcast still wins though

Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
After exchanging emails with Christopher Sabat, I've finally gotten to meet him at Clear Creek High School after the panel and he agrees to meet me tomorrow! I'm planning on taking him out to lunch so that we can discuss plans for the original broadcast audio. He seemed very excited when I gave him some samples on a flash drive. If there's enough time, I'm hoping we can go to my house and listen to them with my stereo equipment. My goal is to convince him with enthusiastic eyes
It's very possible we may see a future DBZ release sometime in the near future.

Soppa Saiyjins from Dorgou Ballru Zetto is my favorite transformation everah, especially when Trounksoru did it in front of Seru and when Bejita did it when he faced Jingonigen-hachigo. But for real, I use the FUNi pronunciation. - Soppa Saia People

A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.
