First DVD I saw was "Bojack Unbound" & "Fusion Reborn" which were rented. But the first one I bought was back in 2004 the Season 3 Collection 3 Madman box set with the Cell Games. The rule my mom made was for everyday my room was clean I got one DVD of the 9, But I got so impatient after Gohan started fighting Cell while my Parents where at work I watched all the episodes in a row

. Then I watched them again when I got them legitimately. I wish I still had those DVD's & my Season 5 DVD's instead of selling them off for the Orange Bricks

Though I got all my Dragon Boxes now so all that was lost was nostalgia.

Actually I just remembered my first DVD was Super Saiya Son Goku that was released in the UK...I owned it for about an hour before going to get a refund.

I guess technically it was the "Arrival" DVD of the Saban dub when Goku shows up on Namek finally. But long before that I was renting the edited version of Movie 5 from Blockbuster for a week, bringing it back, and then re-renting it.
And then before that, and even before DVD, I had VHSes of the Buu arc, specifically "Emergence" and "Play For Time".

Back in the days when my parents wouldn't let me import stuff + I had no idea where to even go to find Dragon Ball DVDs... So I had to rely on what little they had in this nearby import-store. This small selection, for the record, consisted of this, the Tournament Saga set, and the Tenshinhan Saga set. Those were, as a result, the only original Dragon Ball releases I ever got until earlier this year.
Well, that and that thinpak with movies 2, 3 and 4.

I can't remember which one, but it was definitely DBZ movie 1, 2, or 3 released by Pioneer.
