That's why we're looking for his preferences, meaning the latest update known, or the more recurrent style in some cases (such as High School Gohan's training outfit appearing green twice, or Kinto-Un appearing purple more often than yellow, and more often on the color pages). But of course, everything will always remain speculation from us no matter what we do or think.

That is why we need to have all versions that are different than the anime showcased in this thread, regardless of if they're from a specific manga edition or games in their own categories, and then everybody can get what they consider their last update.

But right now, DBO doesn't give me any picture to add, since it either confirms the pictures presented until now or it cancels all manga colors altogether for some of them.
In order for me to add pictures from Dragon Ball Online, you need to show me more characters/clothes that are not yet included in this thread AND different from the anime colors like Bardack and King Chapa (I don't see the point of posting pictures that show no color correction compared to the original anime render).

I know I can try to work on Bardack for now, and about King Chapa, well I don't think I have the right render to work on him (it seems to be a different outfit).

What program are you using to recolor these? I have Photoshop, but it doesn't seem to want to recolor anything to black or white.

I use GIMP, which is known to be the free equivalent to Photoshop, even though Photoshop still remains the ultimate stuff... but it doesn't come for free! 8)

GIMP has a lot of complex functions for experts and it can be quite tricky to find your way through what you want and find out how to do it.
Luckily, recoloring is a very simple one, so even I can do it, it just requires a bit of patience depending on how you choose to do it. There are two ways to recolorize:

1) You can manually select an area by surrounding it with the selection lasso click by click (that's what requires a few minutes, you have to follow the whole edge of what you want to select little by little) and then you just choose the "colorize" option, which will let you instantly put the exact tint with the exact amount of saturation and brightness you want. It is the cleanest way to do it.

2) You can auto-change some colors on the whole picture if you want to spare you some time, or on the area you roughly selected. For example, asking him to change all pink elements is what allowed me to recolorize Dodoria in a few seconds, since there wasn't too much pink elsewhere.
However, it will often leave imperfections since the image has a bit of all colors here and there, you can see a lot of weirdly-colors dots all over, especially in the eyes. To limit or even completely wipe out those unwanted artefacts, you can very roughly select an area that doesn't include the parts of the pictures that will be corrupted. For example, if you want to auto-recolorize Vegetto's potalas but you see it messes up his clothes but leaves the skin alright, you can just quickly draw a very rough selection for which your only care is to exclude the problematic clothes and then order GIMP to transform only the yellow in that selected area.

So either you select the exact element yourself and tell him to instantly colorize it the way you want, or you try to make him auto-detect colors and change all instances of one or several specific colors.
Either way, the time you'll spend on it should range from a few minutes to like 15 minutes in complicated cases (like Gohan's "Kaio Shin Kai" outfit with lots of various changes).
It's just a guess, I never really watched the clock when doing this. :)

Nice, thanks for all the info! But what I don't get is how do you ask it to only replace a specific color? The Colorize option replaces everything in the area you select, and I can't seem to find the option to only replace a specific color.

It's probably available on Photoshop, but I wouldn't know how it is called or how it works.

In GIMP, it's on the "Colors" menu. I have it in French, it's called "Teinte-saturation", so it should be called "Tint-Saturation" in English, it's the second option in the "Colors" menu.
Then you will be able to vary the original setting for red, yellow, green, cyan, blue and pink, effectively transforming them.
Of course, it would be handy if we had all variant, so you'll wonder sometimes what color the program recognizes for the element you're looking for, which is not how you would perceive it sometimes (if it's orange, then do you modify red or yellow or both?). So my advice if you're looking for a specific element is to make all colors stand out one by one by pushing the brightness to the max (you can reset each color at any time). You push red to max brightness to clearly identify what's considered red, then you reset and do the same with yellow to clearly identify it, etc... That way, you will identify what color is on such or such element on the picture in just 15 seconds.

The result of your settings is updated in real time, so while you are setting the color(s) the way you want, you can directly see the result on your image (I'm saying this in case you're afraid that you'll have to apply, see the results, cancel if it's wrong, then try again, then cancel again... It's not like that, it's really handy).

Bardock has a different armor in DBO.

As for the anime colors, the only anime-only colors on DBO are Bulma's pink shirt, golden Super Saiyan aura, Uranai Baba with purple hair, and green with red eyes Shen Long.

Goku's in blue in the SEG, which is also newer than Kanzenban. The Kinto'un is purple, though.

Another good reference (from SEG as well, although the characters drawn much earlier):

(Interestingly Dai Kaioshin's cape color differs from Fat Boo's in that picture.)

So, Karin is white now?

I'll have to settle with the idea of making various versions of character colors (at least possibly) done by Toriyama himself.

That's not as complicated as it looks when written! :) You see squares with the different basic colors and you just modify the square with the color you want to modify, seeing what it looks like on your picture. And about selecting an area, it usually takes you only 5 seconds to draw a big fat circle that only includes the area in which you want him to look for a color and change it. 8)

Some of those, not included on artworks or color pages by Toriyama, were likely not colored by him, we can find again some odd "never-from-Toriyama" things like the one you mention or more importantly, Nail's "muscle parts" being pink, which is exclusive to the anime rendition of the Namek race. They've done the same with the Daizenshu Encyclopedia, with pages explaining timelines I think: you can see plenty of pictures that were made black and white by Toriyama, but that they've colored for the book.
It seems normal, they wouldn't bother Toriyama with a "please, color all these pictures of characters which you didn't take time to color back then", it must be hard enough to motivate him to get just a small contribution from him... (I'm so glad he's "more involved than never before" in the new movie).
hleV wrote:I'll have to settle with the idea of making various versions of character colors (at least possibly) done by Toriyama himself.
That's definately the best way to go for everyone, cause with the many variations and media existing, it's impossible to have a definitive version on which everyone agrees as "the real version nowadays".
Instead of saying "this is the last update", the description will be used to clarify the physical appearance and tell the source of this appearance, not caring of whether it's legitimate or not.
Plus, even when they're just a one-go, some alternate outfits are definately worth it.

Now I don't have many sources except the first Daizenshu (which shows all artworks from the original run and some color pages), the Kanzenban covers and the Kanzenban manga until volume 21 (ending with Goku gathering the Genki Dama against Freezer).
For models coming from other sources that might interest you, like alternate outfits from video games, I need you to provide me with pictures showing the ones you like.
Note that I only have renders from the "character project".
As always, everybody's free to post their own recolored pictures from any sources, I don't claim the monopole of picture-posting in this thread! :)

Now the thing is that I have to device some kind of new presentation. With the many versions of characters we'll end up with, I don't really know what to do right now, I'm trying to think about it.
On the one hand, keeping one slot for all of one character's outfits and versions might end up being a mess!
On the other hand, separating each clothes so that we have all the variations of a same appearance on one slot might end up taking the whole first page, or possibly exceeding a page limit!

1st Post - Version 2.0 online!
UPDATED: Alternative Trunks / Mr. Satan / To the Carrotransformer
CORRECTED: Son Goten / Tao Pai Pai

Yeah, saying it like "version 2.0 online" is quite too much but I thought it would be more appealing that just "I reviewed the presentation to fit all versions equally in the future".
- Anime versions are now included which allow you to make a comparison.
- Pictures are still sorted by character's names in alphabetical order, but are also categorized further into one pack for each different look (going Super Saiyan doesn't count as a different look).
- Written descriptions have been revised to exclude references to one specific version being THE latest and ultimate version. They now take in account the Super Exciting Guides and video games.
- The names have bigger fonts for better comfort in searching through the post.

Other versions of a same render, even one-shots from Toriyama or games, shall be included in the future.

In the meantime, like hleV, you're all free to try and post color-corrected pictures of your choice in this thread.
hleV wrote:Matches DBO and (pretty much) Kanzenban.
Yeah, as you said, you can basically consider this the Kanzenban version as well, one would really have to be picky to say "weeeeell... it's not really the Kanzenban version". :)
Great job with this, you're braver than I am, I usually go the easy way with small, low-res pictures that don't even include the whole render. 8)

Nice work! Though, I don't think that Gogeta has a place here. He is a anime-only character, and he is not from the ones Toriyama designed. Not only that, but we can't be sure that the manga-colors would be the same with Gotenks, since they don't have the same colors in the anime.

That's why it's a "would-be" version, typically the versions that should be like that but we don't have 100% proofs. 8) And this project also includes characters and colors not designed by Toriyama now.

The ones who designed Gogeta did decide he would have the same clothes as Gotenks as part of his inherant concept. So for each version of Gotenks, you have a logical would-be version of Gogeta: if Gotenks had his Kanzenban style in the anime (as depicted in the picture I posted), then the anime staff would have made Gogeta look exactly like this Kanzenban "would-be" style as well.

However, if other people express the will to get Gogeta's "would-be picture" out of the picture, I'll obviously erase it from the post. 8)

My mistake. I never payed attention to that, I always thought the fusion dance gave exactly the same clothes with the same colors, and that Gogeta was just basically a tall Gotenks apart from the hair.
But yes, you guys are absolutely right, the shoulder-circles stuff (which appear on the very pictures I posted, shame on me!!) and the belt are colored differently.

Gogeta has been deleted for now, he'll reappear if an official variation comes up (likely coming from video games since now I know we can't use Gotenks to guess Gogeta's clothes).

Obviously anyone who fuses through the Metamorian Fusion method would get clothes of the same color. Toei is just stupid.

UPDATE: The "Son Gohan: Tears to the Skies" pack has been released.

An unusual amount of new pictures for this update focused on one character, likely making Gohan's slot the most complete to date with most of his variations (almost 40 pictures in total), including exclusive versions from video games.
I hope you guys enjoy (re)discovering some of his alternative colors through his evolution.

I would find it logical too. I guess they thought about what looked cool according to them regardless of what was logical, like Gohan transforming into Super Saiyan in GT.

It's interesting to see what AT intended to be the original colors, but I'm too used to the anime colors. No pink Dodoria? What?
