I personally see Buu's mind games as a huge factor in why Gohan lost. I mean Buu is taunting him the entire fight, surely he would lose his cool and start fighting sloppily.
Gotenks Buu may've been stronger than Gohan, but in strength alone not by that much.

Against Buu, being even with him means you lose because of his stamina advantage. Gohan lost the moment Buu absorbed Gotenks. Buu just made Gohan's defeat more crushing by using those mindgames.

Although maybe he could have held out for 30 minutes?

Hmm, I actually really liked the whole psychological torture thing they had going.

Unfortunately, I'll have to go on a hiatus from watching this for some time due to a medical condition involving a family member. Would've wanted to finish the Fusion Saga before something like this happened.

And we're back. Everything's ok. So, I'm now up to the point where Vegito has been absorbed.

-Goku's voice seems to be a bit more dominant than Vegeta's as Vegito. It helps being the live one. Does that make Vegito a half-zombie?

-Dabura's antics in Other World are very amusing! He's making even the ladies feel awkward. :D

-Buu getting his butt kicked by Vegito in candy form is pure genius. Strangely, no explanation is provided as to how he could do that, or even speak completely normally.

-There was quite literally a flashback within a flashback. King Yemma flashing back to Vegeta flashing back to his first battle with Majin Buu. Oddly enough, the latter is in gray-scale, something we haven't seen so far.

And back again. Just finished the Fusion Saga, but it's ended in a cliffhangar inside Buu.

-I find those episodes involving Buu's innards a lot of fun, actually! So much banter between Goku and Vegeta, priceless! Like a married couple! :D

-"The Southern Exit". I gotta remember that one. Seriously, there were so many poop jokes here! Just like good old DB.

-Oh, Goku finally remembered he and Vegeta can read minds. This ability may have been useful in some other scenes. :|

-Justin Cook was totally channeling his Raditz laughter with Super Buu. So memorable, that was!

Anyway, I was hoping we'd finish DBZ before our deadline in early December (spending the month with my father), but it looks like it'll have to wait until January.

Whoa, that's a lot more direct than the English line. "I'm not finished with you yet Gohan... 8) "

Guess that evens it out in a way.
Could be worse. The French dub had her at that point say she wanted to marry him, lol.

And FINALLY. I was able to get back to seeing this, saw the next 4 episodes. Here are my thoughts.

-The people popcorn scene actually got a good laugh out of us.

-Oh, so Buu CAN talk in this form. "Buu squash you like bugs" and "Dum-Dums".

-Goku's being handed the idiot ball a lot here. :? He and Vegeta really don't have this planned out very well.

-Oh, Videl referenced the teddy bear underwear. Joy! :D

He never talks in the manga. I'm not sure if he does in the Japanese anime.
-Goku's being handed the idiot ball a lot here. :? He and Vegeta really don't have this planned out very well.
The final battle basically requires an idiot ball so it doesn't end in three seconds due to Vegetto/Gogeta/Gotenks/Gohan one-shotting this nerfed version of Buu. The anime actually makes this look even dumber, since it nerfs Pure Buu (and SS3 Goku by extension) to the point that SS2 Vegeta alone can put up a decent fight against him. No real reason is given for why they don't just gang up on Buu and kick his ass, given that SS3 Goku was his equal, and SS2 Vegeta would be a very potent tie breaker (especially considering it's shown you CAN just flat-out destroy that stuff Buu is made of after you blow him up). In the manga it kinda made sense, since Vegeta was useless and it didn't seem like Goku ever intended to let him fight Buu despite their rock-paper-scissors game, but the anime has SS2 Vegeta holding his own for a bit, so there's no real reason why he couldn't have just butted in to completely turn the tables on an otherwise nigh-even fight.

^I'm referring to the scene where he senses Goku and Vegeta raising their power levels when he's about to destroy Other World. His mouth clearly moves with both lines. Surely, he must've said something in the original, even if it was just "Eebity-eebity-bleeb".

The scene really doesn't play out like that. Buu gets frustrated, hurt, annoyed, and even intimidated by Vegeta at several points. We've seen what an actual toying-around Pure Buu looks like. Pure Buu always laughs and enjoys his fights, even when fighting an equal, but he never LETS his enemies put up a fight. He just crushes them while laughing, and gets annoyed whenever he's not doing that. It seems that the intent of letting Vegeta get in a few good hits was to show that he's not a complete weakling. The fact that they outright change certain manga scenes to make him look better (i.e. having Pure Buu be hurt by his first blast rather than just slightly surprised, having Pure Buu be angry right afterwards rather than laughing, having Pure Buu be scared of Vegeta's resilience rather than finding him lol-worthy) makes that really obvious.

The Buu Arcs always been my favorite. So what do you think of it compared to the rest of the dub?

Well, I never had any issue with the dub to begin with. I started with Dragon Ball, unlike pretty much every other Dragon Ball fan in the US. Then saw the movies and went straight to Z, choosing the American soundtrack. I will note the dubbing seems to be on around the same level as Dragon Ball and the redubbed Seasons 1-3.

The funny thing is I remember the Dragon Ball anime as a kid more than Z, but since I had the Budokai games I knew Z's story much more, it's kinda weird.

He wasn't scared of Vegeta so much as intimidated by his force of will. Had nothing to do with power. Or rather, his weakness is what made him intimidating.

He wasn't scared of Vegeta so much as intimidated by his force of will. Had nothing to do with power. Or rather, his weakness is what made him intimidating.
Pure Buu wouldn't be intimidated by a weakling who only survived because he was secretly only using a third of his real power. His fear followed by extreme anger make the "he was holding back" excuse pretty unlikely. That, and the fact that Vegeta landing hits and not staying down genuinely pisses him off.
You seem to remember the anime more than I do right now, but even so, I don't honestly recall it being that different from the manga where he toys with him.
Manga Vegeta never landed any blows on Pure Buu (unless you count his first attack, which caught Buu off-guard), never did anything other than amuse him (unless you count Buu's very minor surprise at Vegeta's first attack), wasn't able to get back up after Pure Buu beat him into the ground, and didn't even try to fight back against Buu after the beating began. Anime Vegeta managed to hurt, frustrate, intimidate, and anger him at several points, as well as get in four good hits and a barrage.

It's pretty much an entirely different battle. The pre-fight warm-up where base Vegeta fights Pure Buu is actually a more accurate recreation of the SS2 Vegeta vs Pure Buu manga fight. It even features a nigh-identical recreation of the manga scene where Vegeta blows off Pure Buu's legs: Buu expresses minor surprise at this, then regenerates, laughs, and smacks Vegeta down while treating him as a complete joke. By contrast, a similar attack by SS2 Vegeta in the anime hurt and angered Pure Buu, and was strong enough to make him retreat temporarily.
