The cringe.
Re: Why is Broly popular?
If you're too cool for Broly cause he's popular that's fine. I personally enjoyed him and Movie 8 for a number of reasons.
Broly was a link to the past, a connection to saiyan history when a lot of fans wanted to see it explored more. We got a new planet vegeta and more lore.
People love destined rival characters. Much like how Spiderman is linked to Venom or Superman to Doomsday, Goku connection to Broly made it all the cooler.
Seeing goku take on the strongest is one of the best things about Dragon ball and at the time Broly was the strongest. As a infant he survived a planet explosion and survived in space. You can't deny the fact that the DB fandom love super battles and that hasn't even changed in Super as people nitpick powerlevels and demand more fights.
He was given the status of Legendary insurmountable Saiyan and the desire to see a proper conclusion was never fulfilled. So people want to see him and goku settle the score.
Sure Broly's return was stupid and Bio Broly was absolute crap. But movie 8 was pure coolness. With neat moments like Vegeta taking Broly with him cause he could sense his innate fierceness as a saiyan.

Re: Why is Broly popular?
Meh, I might be bias here because I always loved Cooler as a character, but I awlays thought he did a good job of presenting himself as his tag line. Frieza's older brother, I enjoyed how he would excel in other things enough to make him his own character, while also sharing the traits that seem universal among his family. I think overall he's one of the better movie villains, but again, I'm biased... At least until that stupid second movie that I refuse to watch again.ABED wrote:Maybe on Garlic, no on Dr. Uiro. Uiro's plan never made sense to me. He wants the body of the strongest even though he thinks he's stronger?Kuririn Fan wrote:Garlic Jr and Dr Uiro are better movie villains and have better movies.
Let's not forget Cooler, even he is you know what than Broly.
Janemba and Hirudegarn are awesome and unique as well.
Cooler is just a less effeminate Freeza. Janemba's first form is fun, but his second isn't interesting, and Hirudegarn is just a giant monster. Regardless, Broly's design does stand out.

Re: Why is Broly popular?
Despite Broly being a dull character, Movie 8 was fine in and of itself, and I'd even say it was very good.
The problem is that they kept bringing him back and exaggerating/flanderizing his 'Hulk Smash' traits.

Re: Why is Broly popular?
Honestly at this point the whole "Broly power wank" thing can laid to rest at this point. His "Power Overflowing" line was misundestood by a lot of folks but its been cleared up since then. and He's been put up against Gogeta in a few VIDEO GAME intros.
If anybody gets "wanked" its gotta be Freeza by far!!! He has more story line appearances, and his most recent one puts him above Vegetto just by torturing someone for 4 months... Wow!

Re: Why is Broly popular?
I really do not see the animosity about this other than being a Toei invention.
I honestly doubt there would be nearly as many complaints if it was from Toriyama, despite him designing the character but go figure..
Anyway, he's a great fun character who is good for a break and not a "big bad" over all arc. A short movie was perfect for the character and bringing him back multiple times unnecessarily was a mistake.
In terms of being popular he is intensely unique to DBZ and the franchise overall. Where you have Cell, Frieza, and Super Buu engaging in witty banter and "Toying" with their enemies. There is none of that with Brolly, it is pure destruction out of the gate without the character needing it be incredibly cocky, acting like a snotty @$$hole. Some people do not enjoy characters like that, even if they are villains and not EVERY SINGLE big bad villain needs to display that same level of cockiness. Even having Buu display the same character traits as both Cell and Frieza was particularly annoying when Buu's other forms and motives were a breath of fresh air from the typically monologuing Supervillain.
Brolly adds more variety in his characterization and move set than any other villain in Z. Every other Big Bad threatened the earth/universe, etc. There were actually lives other than their own at stake. Against Broly it was purely self preservation, they could have all died on that planet and it would have been unlikely anyone in the universe would have suffered or been endangered. Think incredible Hulk/Bruce Banner. If he's not triggered he would be no true danger to others. Therefore, at any point they could have elected to die and there would be few consequences beyond the band of fighters voluntarily laying their lives down anyway.
In terms of design and move set, SSJ was thought to be the ultimate form in the universe and it technically was the ultimate naturally biological form known. It was thought to be rare and incredibly special, but was kinda cheapened by the SSJ give-a-way. Even if you do not agree with it or consider it canon, the form was fantastic as it built on existing lore and provided an explanation on why everyone could suddenly go Super Saiyan while once again elevating that form to something special. In addition, Broly had little motive and while I am not a fan of the BS backstory with Goku, it still helps to make him both incredibly dangerous and benign at the same time. He has no desire to conquer the universe of any of that. The argument could be made that his is pathologically insane, but again there is almost no guarantee that he couldn't be subdued after Goku's death.
His design and presence are fantastic. Where Goku is "Goku" first and a SSJ second. Broly is first and foremost his SSJ form. He is more of force both in design and structure and personality. Its almost as if his raw power has stripped him of humanity and he is a walking shell for that power and nothing more. In this instance they are not fighting a person, per se but a force. Its like fighting a Volcano or a hurricane. These forces of nature aren't going to pull underhanded schemes, or bad for its life, or any number of other traits. You have two options, survive and overcome or succumb. There was not bartering with Broly for his life, not deals to be made. Nothing. For me this is a fair more interesting prospect as it departs from the norm. Getting offered to join up with enemy, Hero turns it down, Cocky enemy gets indignant, etc. How many times have we seen that play out in the Dragonball series alone...
His move set is completely different than anything we have seen recently. As someone described it, his use of grapples, clothesline, power drives, and body slams makes him a far more interesting fighter. His moves are unrefined and based on pure power rather than technique.
Its like having Ryu fight Zangief. The variety is why better than Ryu fighting a bunch of Ken or M. Bison clones. I think in terms of the fighting and villains in DBZ, Broly adds a much welcome new perspective in the same way that you wouldn't want to keep fighting the same type and style of fighter in Street Fighter. Like I said, considering how small a role he has in the franchise I can't understand the enormous amount of hate and this it is unwarranted considering all that his character brings. Again, I feel like if it was a Toriyama thing, it would be celebrated as "brilliant".

Re: Why is Broly popular?
Pretty much how I feel. Broly could be a big bad if you made a few alterations to his personality, but as it is, he works for a movie, and even there I think the movie is a little long.Anyway, he's a great fun character who is good for a break and not a "big bad" over all arc. RoF was from Toriyama but that doesnt stop fans from realising that its shit, same with Dragon Ball Minus.TheMikado wrote:I really do not see the animosity about this other than being a Toei invention.

Re: Why is Broly popular?
Yet some fans had difficulty even admitting that much when they came out. Some didn't come around on RoF until just recently after spending a lot of time in denial. I'm just saying that just because its from Toei doesn't make it automatically bad and just because its from Toriyama doesn't make it automatically good although some people have this opinion to a greater or lesser extent.Kuririn Fan wrote:RoF was from Toriyama but that doesnt stop fans from realising that its shit, same with Dragon Ball Minus.TheMikado wrote:I really do not see the animosity about this other than being a Toei invention.

Re: Why is Broly popular?
Why Broly is popular huh?
Lets run them real quick
Cool design. Check
Badass voice. Check
Exclusive Legendary Super Saiyan status. Check
Dark backstory. Check
Broly's split personality also adds to his appeal imo
In M8, he was in Base for most part. A very quiet & timid dude. Suddenly his Restricted Super Saiyan form surfaced as he attacked Goku at night. Freaked out! But MFker trolled & as he finally lets out his beastly LSSJ state. Jaw. Dropped. On. Sofa. No joke
M10 was special as well. Broly was majestic as regular SSJ (as he fought Goten & Trunks & Gohan briefly) but once transforms into LSSJ it was blood-fest
Bio-Broly was pure Bakemono & felt he does what was expected of him. Kickass
Overall, his popularity is right up there with Frieza, Cell & Boo

Bardock and Trunks specials are masterpieces, both were Toei creations, most of the movies are entertaining.
On the other hand, GT is really bad.

It didn't suck, it wasn't as compelling just on the basis of him already being a SSJ before Gohan died, but it didn't suck.
