The DBZ Jump Anime Tour Special (Now Streaming!)

I, for one, have never said anything like that. All I said was that the series doesn't develop its full potential until after a few arcs, but I personally liked the early episodes as well. In fact, I don't think anybody here said "The first episodes suck, it gets better after the 100th", but "It gets better" (which doesn't implies that it was bad before).
For me it was good since the beginning, and the way it developed confirmed my first impressions: a series with a unique, incredibly well-defined personality.

If the first few episodes are great, then the argument can't really be made that the later episodes will improve on a completely "meh" impression.
And, if you think that "meh" impression is going to last 30 or so episodes before it gets to the really, really, really good part later on, isn't it a lot to ask to have someone devote half a day's worth of time going through the part that can be expected to continue to be getting the same response as episodes 1-15.
The point is that "meh" never applies to it. The series really is still good for those early episodes, if a bit formulaic. But One Piece has proven itself rare amongst other "typical" shonen series in that it actually keeps on improving as time goes on. It's not that it doesn't get good until a certain point, no, it's already good even from the beginning. It just keeps getting better.
If it's just plain not someone's cup o' tea, then sure, whatever.

Actually, finding a Dragon Ball fan who only likes one part of the series (or likes one part way more than the other) is easier than finding a One Piece fan who only likes one part of the series (or likes one part way more than the other).
I mean, usually the worst thing a One Piece fan says about One Piece is that "the beginning is not as good as the rest". But with Dragon Ball you have people who only like Dragon Ball Z, people who only like Dragon Ball, people who think the series sucks after de Frieza saga, people who think the series sucks after the Cell saga, etc.

I'm not getting on your back or trying to attack your or anything, Kunzait, but I just wanted to point something out:
Granted, you were looking at the beginning of the series, and Deep Thought was looking at the end of the series. So there are probably tons of different principles applying here.
Again, I'm not trying to get on your back or anything. I'm not pro-One Piece or anything(I've only seen bits and pieces of a few arcs). I don't mean any offense by this or anything, and we've all done something like this(Don't lie, you have). I just wanted to point this out.

Anyway, about the special. I saw this mentioned earlier: Does the fact that they're streaming this mean that there probably won't be a DVD release?
And if there won't be a DVD release in Japan because of this, will that effect the chances for a DVD in America?
You said this above about the amount of One Piece that you're judging, then you said this to someone else before:Kunzait_83 wrote:Roughly the first 30 or 40 off of Kaizoku fansubs awhile back.Saago wrote: Kunzait_83, just out of curiosity (really), how many episodes of One Piece have you watched?
It just looks to me like you're doing the same thing as him. You're judging One Piece based off of 30-40 episodes out of 300+ total episodes and running.Kunzait_83 wrote:I think I mentioned this to you in another thread, but essentially you’re just talking about the Cell and Buu arcs; and that’s only the last two arcs of the series. They’re both pretty long, but they still only account for what amounts to the very tail end of the series, the last two story arcs out of ten.Deep Thought wrote:Stuff about Dragonball being repetitive
Here’s the whole series, and the parts in bold comprise the part where you (and a lot of other people) think that it goes downhill;
Pilaf
21st Budokai
Red Ribbon
22nd Budokai
Daimao
23rd Budokai
Saiya-jin
Freeza
Cell
Majin Buu
That’s not a helluva lot in the grand scheme of the series’ entirety.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

Just last week I imported the first One Piece set (no Australian release
) and these past few days have sat through the first six episodes with my girlfriend (who is not an anime fan) and I can totally see where Kunzait is coming from, the last time I saw these episodes was over a year ago, and while I still enjoy them, I kind of view them as a stepping stone to the later part of the series that I really do enjoy.
It's a similar situation with the first 13 episodes of Dragonball for me, while I do enjoy them, It's not on the same level as the rest of the story arcs in DB, from the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai to the 23rd I think the series is absolutely phenomenal, and easily superior to the Z portion of the anime.
The problem with One Piece is, (in my opinion) it doesn't really hit it's stride until past the 50 episode mark, which is (understandably so) too long for some people to stick with it, I found the characters endearing enough to keep me watching, but I'll be honest, through the early portion of the show, I was beginning to lose interest, I was watching other anime at the time and if it wasn't for Bleach and Naruto turning into utter crap (again my opinion) I probably wouldn't have gotten into One Piece.
I'll always sing the praises of One Piece, mostly because out of all the recent long running Shonen shows, it's the only one I still enjoy week after week.

You know, I've just read the 45th volume of the manga, and you know what ? This one achieved to convince me that One Piece is better than Dragonball.
The character development, the scenario, the narration, the fights, are really awesome.
I still prefer DB though, but for absolutely irrational and subjective reasons.
Anyway, to adopt One Piece, you must read it, not watch it. The anime is ok, but the manga is so, so much better. Oda's style is gorgeous, and if you don't want to waste your time, it's faster to read the manga than to watch the series !

In Thanksgiving 2002, it was that we were waiting for the disc where Kid Buu appears.
In Thanksgiving 2003, it was that we were waiting for the disc where Goku turns into Super Saiyan 4.
In Thanksgiving 2004, it was that we were waiting for the DragonBall GT TV Special.
In Thanksgiving 2005, it was that we were waiting to see Vegeta and Nappa land on earth in the Ultimate Uncut Special Edition.
In Thanksgiving 2006, it was that we were waiting for screenshots from the upcoming Season Sets from a FUNI rep.
In Thanksgiving 2007, it's that we . . . um . . . did anything happen last year, other than all the bitching about why Season Three was delayed until February?
In Thanksgiving 2008, it's that we'll all be watching Yo!! Son Goku and Friends Return!! to go live.
Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same without DragonBall!!

UGH! Sorry to be a grammar nazi, but what's with everybody saying "it was that we" instead of just "we," lately?! It's becoming the new frickin' "irregardless!" [/rant]
I was so lost by the Thanksgiving comments; in Canada Thanksgiving is 5-6 weeks prior to the American one.

Are . . . are you saying that the grammatically correct way of wording those sentences is "it was we were"?
This is a surprise. If that's grammatically correct, then it sounds very weird-- to me, at least-- and I'm a little scared.

Long time, no see. How you been? Y'mean that you ain't dead?
A-yup. I've already told her-- it comes smack in the middle of her annual DragonBall Remembrance Week self-holiday. And she's coherent in Japanese, so a possible lack of subs won't matter to her. Or to me, since I'll force her to translate.

I ain't. I've still been browsing and posting here and been on AIM often. I've tried IMing ya' and sending PMs, but I think you need a new AIM program and maybe check your PM box more often. I kinda thought you were giving me the cold shoulder for a short while, didn't really know why. As long as we're cool. ^^;Li'l Lemmy wrote:Long time, no see. How you been? Y'mean that you ain't dead?

It depends on which screenie you've been talking to. I share at least one of them with someone else (who isn't SG2), so you may have been catching someone who doesn't know who you are or what'cha want. Although, I haven't been told of anything like that . . .
Getting SG2 to go near anything GT is like trying to bring a snowman to the beach.Conan the SSJ then wrote:Oh yeah, remember to get SG2 into DBZ Abridged and to read my GT Characters guide~
As for you, I thought I gave you my e-mail addy in addition to my other information. Use that if all else fails; I check it every day.
Have you been talking to SG2?
To swing myself back on-topic (as opposed to making this thread into a personal conversation between me and Conan, here), I'll say that I don't think a streaming video is necessarily worthwhile indication that we won't ever see this special put onto DVD. This isn't like the Playdia footage-- it's an actual "movie", just like all the movies and specials that came before it. Can anyone thing of any existing DragonBall footage besides Playdia's that FUNimation HASN'T put onto DVD?
I suppose I should say DBZ footage, as things like the safety videos and clip shows don't count.
