The part of the rules he was referring to is the "no bootlegs" portion, I believe. Which is what's implied by your second "fan-remastered" screencap. Dunno if it actually is a grab from a bootleg or not, but whatever.

Anyway... It's an old, relatively cheaply-produced cartoon from the 80's-90's. Grain is part of the image, and that's all there is to it. If you try too hard to remove that grain, you're going to end up removing actual animation detail along with it. Which was one of the bigger problems with the automated "remastering" used for FUNi's orange bricks.

And will you do that free of charge ('cuz, ya' know, you don't need health benefits or even a living wage at all) for somewhere around 9,218,880 individual frames (~24 fps * 60 seconds per minute * ~22 minutes per episode * 291 episodes of DBZ)...?

I do so hope you'll also remove every bit of detail in the frame, just like in the above example! :D
Don't use that aggressive irony. I don't understand of these stuff, but I think the fanmade it's more clear, and for me don't has grain. Maybe some details can't be seen as the original (I just don't know) But the final result has better stuff and maybe worst stuff, like whatever release, but I think the better stuff it's enough to be better (In my opinion)
Also, I just found that on this forum: (Questionable link removed by moderator)
It's not mine.
So for these people who it's going angry, I don't want to talk about bootleg, I am talking about delete the grain, as a normal guy of this forum who can change the screens with photoshop.

Well, it's part of the image. Remove it and the image becomes blurry and in high motion scenes often removes entire lines of animation. Look no further than the orange bricks.
Repair the grain it's easy.
I have seen fans releases which have clean the grain:

Dragon Box:

Fan release:

It's not so difficult do that, when even a guy who it's amateur on this can do it.
First of all, I can tell by looking that that is not a Dragon Box pic, it's probably been compressed before. Also, that second image looks horrible. The colors are so fucking flat and there's no detail on anything. I would recommend for you to go ahead and enjoy the orange bricks, or turn DNR on on your TV. We should be forced to put up with that blurry shit. Trust me, I've tried to remove grain before in Gimp with the "color selector" method. It doesn't work at all, and it's especially bad in dark scenes.

The first screen it's from the spanish dvd's. I thought it was the same as the dragon box.
Anyways, I don't care the colours, that could be changed too. I don't understand about how delete it, I just said I have seen something which has been done by a fan and for me looks god.I'm talking about the grain, yes, delete the grain in that way can destroy a little bit the details, but I think that's exaggerated. It's not too much.

The spanish DVDs use the same source as the Dragon Box, but remastered from scratch by AB Group (or whatever company licenses DB in France) and has the saturation turned up and its own share of DVNR.

Please read! I just said that yes, the details can be lose, but not too much! you lose something and you win another, I think without grain it's better, it's not too much the lost of the details.
I'm not discussing bootlegs, in the chase i haven't put that screen i could put a screen change with photoshop by myself.
And thanks, but I understand english xD.

To be fair, some of the non-re-drawn scenes in the Kai blurays look REALLY good. Although, I still think the new screen shots look a bit sharper than the Kai discs because the image can get slightly blurrier after grain removal.

The grain on these is a bit disappointing. I was hoping for something a like a slightly smoothed out Dragon Box release. Or like their Dragon Ball and GT season sets with frame-by-frame restoration and a little less DVNR.

I'll reserve judgement until I can see them in motion. But I was hoping they'd do a bit more noise reduction than this. I didn't expect something akin to Kai the whole way through, but something a little closer would have been great. I'll stand stand by Kai, grainlessness and all, being the best looking version of this footage. (Just the footage; I'm not a Kai fan overall.)

They look horrible. I'm sorry, I'm usually not that rude or blunt but... they look bad. If FUNimation ever put out anything that looked like that, they'd loose all credibility in the anime community.

 Its okay, I didn't realize how badly the outcome looked until afterwards and since they were already done, I just decided to upload them. Its a WIP though, so the final product should be done soon.

That's all well and good but, I think posting more custom screen shots here might be a bad idea. For one it'll steer this topic off course since people are probably going to tell you what they think of them. And also, it might confuse the people who just scroll down and stop when they see an image. If you feel you really, really need to post them, you can always make a topic in the "fan-made" section.

Does that scene with Bulma and Yamcha exist in Kai? I mean, can someone make a comparison between this release and Kai?

Hmm. I went through a comparsion from the screenshots of Nappa. I say they look almost exactly the same, except the brightness. The Blu-ray one looks a tad bit brighter. Everything in that screenshot looks right (color, aspect ratio, grains) The only other difference is that the Blu-ray looks zoomed out. I think that's a good thing because we can see more image, even if it's a little bit gain to the both sides. If they actually release like that, then it will become serious competition between Dragon Box. That may be FUNimation's best release in over decade, in their own way. I was hoping for a new dub, but I doubt it.

Should we start nickname it? How about Zenaki Box? Or Super DBOX? :P

Unfortunately, even if this new remaster had the opportunity to look as good as something such as Avatar on Blu-ray, it could never be called "Super DBOX", because it will most likely be missing everything that makes the DBOX so great -- Japanese title cards, recaps, next episode previews, extras, etc. No matter what future releases see the light of day, I doubt anything would replace the Dragon Boxes on my shelf without everything intact. As the notice on the back of the boxes says, "Truly the essential edition for Dragon Ball Z purists, this set isn't an addition to your archive - it is your archive. Your wish is finally granted."

With that said, I must admit that my interest in these Blu-ray sets is definitely growing. I'm very happy that FUNimation is taking their time on this release. Overall, they have come a long way as a company. I guess you could say that my faith in them isn't completely non-existent.
