They're hiding something big. I keep telling myself that. We know far too little about this movie for them to not be hiding something.
Two things to bare in mind; one, the character page hasn't even gone up on the official website yet, and two, even then we can't be sure that's the full cast because Kaioshin ended up appearing in
Battle of Gods and we had no indication of him doing so until very, very late on. So I wouldn't be worrying about any of that yet.
Pilaf and the gang are in the film, but they still haven't appeared in any official movie-related material. There's probably a whole other sub-plot in this film that we don't know about yet. I've found the concerns surrounding characters like Goten and Trunks to be very perplexing. We're still a good two months out, there's plenty of time for more to be revealed. The only surprise for me so far is the lack of promotional tie-ins in the same way that we had KFC on-board for BOG.
As for something big, I was having the same thought in the lead-up to BOG. That "something big" ended up being Super Saiyan God, but there was also a couple of things that came completely out of left-field which we weren't aware of until the film came out- such as the ending and Pan's involvement. I think the big reveal, either later this month or some time in March, will be Freeza's new transformation but I'm interested to see what sort of twists Toriyama has inserted into the movie itself.
EDIT: Just doing a quick comparison to what it was like during 'BOG season'. Things are slower than they were this time in 2013, but I think we can attribute that to the movie's later release date. I think what makes everything seem so much quieter this year is the lack of merchandise. Think about it, before BOG there was so much more going on. We had the Chozenshuu and the 'Full Color Comics' coming out, both sets of books containing new tidbits relating to the film. Right now we have
Xenoverse and, as of right now, it doesn't really tie into the new film in anyway. For a rough comparison (there's a lot of other things to take into account), January 2013 gave us 35 news stories on Kanzenshuu. January 2015 gave us 19. I think the key difference with BOG is that they were going out of their way to celebrate everything Dragon Ball and really cash in on that nostalgia. They can't do that as much for this one.
