Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discussion
Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
Regarding the song, I'm sure it's not "dokkan dokkan" but it sounds like it more than likely if Mike McFarland adapted the english lyrics. He likes to preserve the original sound of the Japanese songs he adapts over making it a strict-sounding translation.

Again this shows the laziness of Kai, Toei could have bumped them up to 5.1 without too much effort I reckon.Treklin wrote:I cannot understand the japanese ... why the hell are they using only a 2.0 on their releases instead of 5.1 ??? i mean the

okay 20 years ago db was in japan mono now stereo ??? thats a big step !!! and this in a country where they're using the
modernst technologies ...![]()
2.0 on bluray big shame on toei ...
Since Toei doesn't have their blu-rays and DVD for Kai in 5.1, then FUNimation won't either. I think this is because Toei is afraid of reverse importation so FUNimation probably aren't allowed to have the Japanese audio in 5.1.
Knowing that Goku's voice is singing the opening of Kai is making me all the more excited about this release, I really can't wait.

A.) No, the voices aren't in "dts-hd." The stems for the vocal tracks are more than likely in an uncompressed PCM format.
B.) No, Toei doesn't have "MODER" voice recording studios, but they do have modern studios.
C.) Modernst?
D.) The 2.0 decision wasn't based on technological limitations.
In closing...please, please proofread your posts. And have some idea of what you're talking about.
P.S. - Yes, it would have been interesting to see what kind of 5.1/6.1/7.1 mix Toei themselves would have done for the show, but they made the decision not to do a surround mix so...no big deal, in my opinion.
Err, you'd have to take the stems and mix them in 5.1, you couldn't just "bump them up to 5.1." Difficult? Not incredibly. Then again, FUNi's 5.1 mixes on the Orange Bricks showed a definite lack of prowess. Plus, Toei would have to provide them with the stems for the Japanese track which is unlikely.LilKokuLink wrote:Again this shows the laziness of Kai, Toei could have bumped them up to 5.1 without too much effort I reckon.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I agree a Japanese track in 5.1 would be awesome, and I'm a bit baffled as to why they didn't mix one (is this an uncommon thing in Japan?).
The 5.1 FUNimation currently has out (I'm not sure if it was altered for the DBox release) is quite a bit lacking. I have to wonder if OTei only gave them a raw audio track of the music and sound effects already mixed and the engineers just through the English tracks over them...

I know exactly what 5.1 is but I suppose I didn't express it very well. I haven't got 5.1 surround at home so I've never listened to the orange bricks 5.1 track, what would you say is wrong with it?MajinVejitaXV wrote:Err, you'd have to take the stems and mix them in 5.1, you couldn't just "bump them up to 5.1." Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
It sounded like someone was playing the BGM next door while the voice acting was taking place in my living room. It's been about 3 years since I heard it, but I know we talked about it on the DaizEX podcast where we reviewed the set.LilKokuLink wrote:I know exactly what 5.1 is but I suppose I didn't express it very well. I'm not sure if it's uncommon for Toei, but I know plenty of anime productions have a surround track these days.JulieYBM wrote:I agree a Japanese track in 5.1 would be awesome, and I'm a bit baffled as to why they didn't mix one (is this an uncommon thing in Japan?).
I think they just ported over the track from the Orange Bricks, but I'll have to check. I don't think they got a BGM/SFX pre-mix, though I could be wrong. In either case, the main problem was their inability to properly mix the voices with the BGM. The voices were way too hot in the mix.The 5.1 FUNimation currently has out (I'm not sure if it was altered for the DBox release) is quite a bit lacking. Oh. It sounds like their saying "dokkan dokkan", but maybe I've heard the Japanese version so much.

Ah well that's a shame, I guess I'll have to try and pester my dad to get a home cinema system seeing as he's so keen on buying a blu-ray recorder for over £800 >.>.MajinVejitaXV wrote:It sounded like someone was playing the BGM next door while the voice acting was taking place in my living room. Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
Yeah, I think the voice track was just lifted from their broadcast track and wasn't adjusted for volume, so it was really meant to mix with the broadcast music rather than the proper score, lack of unmixed BGM+SFX track or not.

I also like Dokken, but mostly for their song "Dream Warriors" that went alongside A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 Dream Warriors back in '87. That's a topic for another discussion, though.

George Lynch is God. That's all I'm saying. ;p
That makes sense. Still, a quick re-EQ could have fixed it. So, just goes to show you whoever was working the board really wasn't too familiar with how to produce a quality surround mix.JulieYBM wrote:Yeah, I think the voice track was just lifted from their broadcast track and wasn't adjusted for volume, so it was really meant to mix with the broadcast music rather than the proper score, lack of unmixed BGM+SFX track or not.

Very excited about this dub. Can't beleive Funimation is actually using japanese terms. Here's hoping we get Genki Dama instead of Spirit Bomb for this dub.But who knows since they are still saying power level.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
So here I thougth these things would be posted on the main page of at least one of the two website, but guess not.
AHEM! Anyway, *llistens to dubbed Makankosappo*.....holy fried donuts on a stick I think just heard something that I thought I would never, ever ,ever , EVER, hear in my entire life. I don't even know what feelings I should express since I never even bothered to think about this happening. Speechless, just speechless.

It's nothing I'm going to lose sleep over. I don't mind dokkan being in the English lyrics. I just found it kind of interesting since there is an actual translation for dokkan that takes up the same amount of syllables.Kirbopher wrote:Regarding the song, I'm sure it's not "dokkan dokkan" but it sounds like it more than likely if Mike McFarland adapted the english lyrics. I think I'd fall over laughing if Schemmel was forced to sing, "Kaboom! Bang! POW! Paradise!" ;pKendamu wrote:It's nothing I'm going to lose sleep over. Isn't it strange that no one from Sakura Con's mentioned anything?
