The press release says so, that's good enough. The FUNi rep just didn't care enough to look into it.

Ah, thanks! I forgot about it, I've seen only five episodes from the remastered sets and still haven't seen them all, so I forgot)))laserkid wrote:the GT sets are fullscreen.
Then the question remains like this: Why they fucked up the Z season sets with those black bricks on the top and bottom of the screen

They did the DBZ sets first, and they felt the edges of the film were too damaged to remaster, and so they decided between making it "look better" in their remasering they could advertize it as "WIDESCREEN ZOMGWTFBBQS".
Even though the first set was heavily disliked by the fandom, FUNimation had this odd love of consistancy, even when its a detriment. So all of Z came out this way.
But for whatever reason, that consistancy issue doesnt cross to the other series' so they decided to respond to the criticism in kind. Plus they probably had better GT masters then DBZ masters. I don't know about their DB masters.

Not to defend FUNi's widescreen decision or anything, but for as much crap as they get for the cropping, I honestly think they just thought we would love it. I'm sure everybody's going to make a ton of jokes disagreeing with me, but FUNi doesn't intentionally try to piss us off. Sure, they wanted to get rid of some film damage, but widescreen IS the new popular thing with the mainstream, and I think FUNi assumed they could kill two birds with one stone by cutting off some damage and pleasing us by giving the series the 00ber widescreen treatment. They genuinely assumed they were doing something we would like. It just blew up in their faces when they found out we hated it.
I don't think it was about making the series appeal to the born-everyday nine-year-olds or whatever. As crazy as it sounds, FUNi simply tries too hard. There's always gotta be a gimmick. Something they think will make it "better." And then it doesn't.
To be perfectly honest, the reason Dragon Ball and GT get satisfactory releases is because FUNi just gives them normal treatment. They never try to reinvent the wheel with them. What happened with Z was just a failed experiment that FUNi honestly thought we would love. They weren't sitting in the conference room asking "what ELSE can we do to piss off that fanbase?" I think people sometimes forget that.

MagicBox: I never thought about funimation in way, argh, they are want to pissing us off, becuse that widescreen thingy isn't that different from what TOEI is doing with Kai, as we learned thanks to some users about cropping in Kai. Only thing that is little bothering me is that, that they failed with this experiment on all Z sets, that's all. Anyway, I'm not angry on funimation or something and I appreciate the way of presenting Japanese series with minor americanization nowadays, because majority of things related to anime we are getting here in middle Europe are from US. But that TV cut of Naruto was really bad comparing to original uncut (both of them are broadcasting in czech republic, censored on Jetix, and uncut on Animax) so I'm not sure about some things yet.

A minority of people hated it overall. FUNimation, for the most part, was correct in their assumption.MagicBox wrote:Not to defend FUNi's widescreen decision or anything, but for as much crap as they get for the cropping, I honestly think they just thought we would love it. A minority of people hated it to the point of not bothering to purchase it. But I bet if you asked every person who bought it, and they knew the whole story, they'd probably prefer fullscreen.Kendamu wrote:A minority of people hated it overall. You'd lose that bet. I know one guy in-person who doesn't care.Innagadadavida wrote:A minority of people hated it to the point of not bothering to purchase it. Yeah, I'm the same way as that guy.Kendamu wrote:He likes that it takes up his whole TV screen, but he doesn't really care. Don't look too deeply into it, though. It's not like he is.Li'l Lemmy wrote:Doesn't care, or actually prefers 16:9?

Anyway, my wording was wrong in my last post. I said I bet every person who knows the whole story would. When I meant the majority.

Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
