Yeah, I remember seeing that a lot in the Dragon Ball anime (but not the manga). I'm pretty sure whenever they'd do that whole aura effect, they'd pull it off as something that you don't normally see. For example, I remember during the 23rd Budoukai, they'd sometimes "pause" the scene and have everything cut to a darker background, with the auras suddenly appearing. Just saying that the anime did the whole aura thing and yet I don't hear any complaints about thatPain wrote:A lot of characters in Dragonball (The Anime) had this wierd, special effect looking glow around them (Unseen aura).
As for the interview with Chung, I wasn't really that "turned off" by how she talked about the movie. Keep in mind that she's expected to hype it up, so when she does stuff like talk about how Chatwin looks like Goku it should be taken so erm... seriously. Referring to Piccolo as "Lord Piccolo" isn't that big a deal for me, either. I mean, he was referred to King Piccolo / Piccolo Daimao in the original, so what's the big deal there?
I will admit that the reporter referring to the movie as "Dragon Ball Z" kinda irked me. It surprises me that there are people who don't know that a series exists without the "Z." Then again, maybe our little daizEX community just knows tooo much about the series

SSj_Rambo wrote:The fact that the film will have "auras" is a little weird; I don't remember there being any aruras in Dragonball, but I might be wrong. It just sounds like an attempt to make the Dragonball film more like the more popular Dragonball Z.

Mind you I grabbed all these off my Dragon Ball DVDs via quickly browsing episodes almost entirely at random. I'm sure I missed tons and tons more.
I hope this doesn't come off as mean or confrontational anything (cause that's not the intent), but but the simple fact of the matter is that Z has never exactly had a monopoly on over the top Ki battles.Kendamu wrote:That's something I've been thinking for a long time. That's part of the reason I'm kinda skeptical about this movie. I don't want to see "Dragonball" being marketed the same way as "Dragonball Z."
Dragon Ball is just af rife with them, particularly from the 22nd Budokai onward (that's roughly the entire second half of the series, which is incidentally where all the Piccolo stuff that this movie is mainly taking it's cues comes from), where for all intents and purposes, insofar as the action and fighting are concerned, it might as well be Z.
I know the first half of the manga/anime is dedicated mainly to goofy humor... but the (seemingly commonly held) perception that DB is all cutsey innocence and all the giant Ki blasts, blood, and total annihilation of entire cities in drawn out super powered martial arts battles are totally absent from it and entirely exclusive to Z... well that's just a total myth.
Hey, I want this movie to nail the lighthearted tone of the manga/anime just as much as anyone... but the more "badass" aspects were always just as much a part of Dragon Ball as they were Z. That's the plain, simple truth of it with or without FUNimation's (misleading) marketing style.

But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

Mentioning of that, I wonder if giving her that power is some bizarre way to make up for the missing Oolong or Puar?KaiserNeko wrote:Or maybe it's MAI? Yeah, the Chi-Chi Vs. Chi-Chi thing is likely Mai in disguise. It was stated a long time back that Mai would, at one point, pretend to be Chi-Chi in order to get to Goku and the others.
Doesn't rule out the evil clones, though. And I still think that would be an awesome plot moment.
Piccolo: *Uses powers to make evil clones to deal with heroes*
Evil Clones *Appear, for everyone but Goku*
Piccolo: "WHAT!? But that's IMPOSSIBLE!"
Cue major battle where everyone fights their clone while Goku takes on Piccolo.

The thing is, most of those images are of point where everything goes all dark and it kinda makes you assume that normally you can't see those auras. The whole idea of visible auras being an everyday thing in Dragonball is a Dragonball Z thing.Kunzait_83 wrote:*a ton of images*

Also, how those auras are brought into the situation in Dragonball and Dragonball Z are two different things. One is the result of it just being there at all times but being invisible. The other is the result of powering up.
Its not that auras are going to exist in the first place that I'm concerned about. How they depict the auras in the movie is something I'm concerned about. I feel theat it'll be more likely that they'll do it DBZ-style because that's more widely known. If that happens, it'll just kinda take away from the fact that this movie is DB, not DBZ.

I don't think that naming the movie 'Dragonball' necessarily means that anyone intended for it to refer to the first series exclusively. They might have been referring to the series as a whole, and could easily use elements from the second half of the story in the film. They could have even went with 'DBZ' as the title no matter what arc they decided to go with. Either way just because they're doing the Daimao arc doesn't mean they're going for a distinctive "DB" movie.Kendamu wrote: If that happens, it'll just kinda take away from the fact that this movie is DB, not DBZ.

I understand what you mean... and while the "invisible aura" thing applies to SOME of the images above... quite a few of them ARE in fact from moments where the characters are "powering up" in the DBZ style... right there in Dragon Ball.Kendamu wrote:The thing is, most of those images are of point where everything goes all dark and it kinda makes you assume that normally you can't see those auras. It's not quite as frequent as in Z of course, but it still occurs quite a bit here and there throughout Dragon Ball. It most certainly didn't start with Z at any rate. Apart from the more gag-manga-esque portions early on, DB and DBZ really aren't THAT far removed from one another. Not anywhere near as much as some people make it out to seem at least.
There's differences sure (more hard sci-fi in the Z era, Toriyama's art style evolving more, Ki battles ratcheted up even more as time goes on), but at the end of the day it's all from the same manga (under the same title).
This movie is based more on the Piccolo portion of DB anyhow, and by then the style of fighting is basically no different really in any way whatsoever (apart from levels of power of course) than how it is in Z, complete with characters gathering Ki with large auras around them, cities getting wiped out with giant Ki blasts, and characters zipping around at forty five thousand miles per hour.
That all really started with Piccolo Daimao's debut (which is where this movie is beginning from), not Z.

And that's what's making me skeptical. "Hey! Let's do the Piccolo Daimao arc! Better throw 'Rock the Dragon' and a Kaioken in there while we're at it!"MyVisionity wrote:I don't think that naming the movie 'Dragonball' necessarily means that anyone intended for it to refer to the first series exclusively.
