There’s, definitely a middle ground. There’s a universal bnb combo that most characters are able to perform, and the timing on that combo is extremely lenient. Out of curiosity are you trying to learn the combos through the combo trials?
Yeah, I can do the basic BnB... but not consistently yet. Most of the other advanced combos worth their salt are beyond me right now, tbh.
Though after spending more time in training mode, I'll admit I may have undersold how freeform manual combos can be. You just need a good understanding of the extenders.
So there's a middle ground, but I still feel it's a good ways up from what the game wants you to think is the skill floor. My beef is mostly with the very suboptimal auto-combos.
___________
On another note, my current main (shamelessly) is the latest addition himself: SS4 Daimaku. I have no idea what I'm doing with this guy but his kit is so gosh darn aggressive and fun, and he fits right in.
To be honest and it's mostly my experience, when I got to specific level rank in online multiplayer, around 300 000, the skills became obsolete and it was mostly about people using same characters with exploiting "cheat moves"... and to be even more honest, I also did use a cheap last resort combo with SSJ Blue Goku just doing auto-combo and kickdown in the middle which can be chained into infinite, unless I left a brief window of opportunity. This game lacks incredibly in guarding options, compared to Guilty Gear with it's smorgasboard of guarding options, which might lead to a prolonged stalemate and interesting bouts when both players are capable... FighterZ is stripped down to the core and in my experience, who gets the opponent in the chain, wins the whole fight.
Long story short, I went through the advanced mechanics and while I found them interesting on their own merit, I found them obsolete in actual play. And never had enought time on my hands, to devise a strategy how to effectively study and punish any trend of exploit, that surged after every gameplay update, to be able to jump over that ranking wall of exploiting casuals and get up to meet skilled players.
But thumbs up to everyone, that really enjoys the game as much and are still going hard at it. I still consider FighterZ the best DB game of this era IMHO, as I am big fan of classic FG and huge fan of Guilty Gear to begin with since GGX was released. Everything came together in this game. Just a bit sour about the aftermath and subpar updates coming outside of ArcSys.
